The Manly Shaving Thread

I've been trying DE shaving since January with a mix of Feather and Israeli blades, shaving soap/cream, shave oil etc etc but I just can't get a comfortable shave no matter what. The feather blades are insanely sharp and my face being bobbly (for want of a better phrase) I end up with lots of nicks and cuts and an insanley red neck.

The Israeli blades are more forgiving but don't cut as close. I still end up with all the irritation.

So in desperation I went back to good old Morrisons X5 (5 blade razor) and I not only get closer, but with far far less irritation than the Merkur + blades. The X5 may cost me more but here I sit with a closer shave and no redneck.

Sadly for me it looks like the promise of close shaves + low running costs was a false economy. I'll deep clean the Merkur stuff, polish it up and probably offer it for sale.

@tbz ck. Which Merkur razor did you try?

You have just got to give the Aldi 3 blade cartridge a try at £ 2.50 for 10!

They fit the Gillette Sensor/Sensor Excel handle which can still be had for around £5

Merkur arrived! :D

already given it a go and it's not bad! not something to fear as some people have said.
:D

Yes, Feather to have a good reputation for sharpness, and I do about 2-3 shaves with a single blade before I ditch them.
that each side of the blade or per blade?

You will tend to use both sides of the blade each time you shave so it evens out really. I would suggest he means per blade. I tend to get more shaves than that with the feathers before it drags but it's all about your beard and your face.

That's just nerves and using too much pressure, if i really don't want to cut myself i grab my futur, that's a pussycat compared to a straight, and even then if i cut myself it's very minor.

Today i cut myself to ribbons just because i tried a different soap. :D

For thick hair hmm id say a slant/futur or mergress, it's a progress with a better adjuster knob and worth the extra imo. :)

Those with a super iridium of course.

@Zip, do what straight users have to do, stretch the skin, sounds silly but it'll give you a much better shave.

I'm going to go for a slant, with some feather blades to set me off :D

Cheers.

My Murkur came today!

I used the 10% off code and shopped at 'the traditional shaving company'.

I got the some taylor of old bond street cream, a badger brush and a drip stand.
The murkur is the 33c and even though I added on 4 packs of Derby blades I seem to have got about 10!
On top of all this I got my dad a new badger brush and a new soap stick.

The whole lot, inc 10% discount was £70 which I think is quite good.

Can't wait to use the Murkur tomorrow!

Hi chaps.

I am a 3 times a week shaver. Mon, Wed, Fri.

Been having problems all my life. I exfoliate, use moisturiser, expensive after shave balms etc. Tried all shaving creams and 'normal' blades. Still get grief every time I shave.

Been using Gillette Sensor XL for ages now as they are the best I have found on the high street. Also using Fusion super sensitive stuff out of a can (coz it was on special).

I have read this thread with interest and I need to be specced up!

Let's just say, money is not an issue (but I ain't going to splash too much). :D

I need a razor, blades and cream (or oil or whatever).

I think, razor wise, you can't go wrong with a Merkur 34C.

Blades are personal choice so I would get a sample pack first to find out which ones suit you best.

I'm currently using L'Occitane Cade shaving soap and Clinique Post-Shave Healer, although Taylor Of Old Bond St and Mitchell's soaps are also meant to be good. Again soap/shaving balm is personal choice.

I like the Taylor of old bond street creams. They give me a great lather, I've had the unscented one so I can add any fragrance essential oils I want (lime current favourite).

sImon

Its a 39C iirc, its the long handled slant one :)

Just had another shave with the Morrisons X5 and once again no major nicks and no irritation using it and cheap shave oil. Next up the X5 with the woolfat shaving soap I already have (which incidently I do like ;) )

I presume that's with the astra blades, give super iridiums a go, you'll find them sharper and smoother again, i used them in my futur all the time.

Still can't beat a straight, but it's hard to master. :)

Don't forget folks use the code bandb for that 10% off the traditional shaving company.

No i don't work for em, they just happen to seel very cheap merkurs. :p

This thread made me go Merkur. I bought:

Merkur progress
Brush
Mitchell's Wool Fat Shaving Soap
Some Derby blades.

I found it a lot better than using a Gillete and I can get a close shave without irritation now BUT I still prefer the stubbly/short beard look! Damn.

I bought the Merkur 23C in the end, it's in a different league to those awful mach 3/fusion razors. Only problem was I picked up some blades from the supermarket recently (as that was all they had - own brand!) and they're pretty awful. Does anyone know which high st store stocks decent blades or somewhere to get them online, pref with free delivery?

I also have some gilette foam and some gel, but I found this week that I actually get a significantly better shave not using them at all and just using water! So, is there anywhere that does decent oils/soaps too, as using just water is still a little irritating for me.

If anyone is still using those gilette razors, you really should consider a Merkur, I was actually surprised how much easier shaving is with these, and generally a better experience once you're accustomed to it.
