Taken the plunge and gone for a Merkur because the blades are so cheap. Wasn't so successful first go I'm used to patheticitcally easy Gillette 3 blade thingies, a few small cuts and it looked like an abatoir... and yes I feel like an idiot.

Think I may have to shave daily, it was a few days since I shaved last and stubble was a bit long.

Go to youtube and watch the mantic vids. It will show you the proper technique which will make more of a difference to your shave then pretty much anything else.

Tired of my Phillishave leaving stray hairs on my neck / jawline which I tend to end up picking at through the day I bought myself a Wilkinson Sword Classic Double Edged Razor. Tried shaving with it this morning using King of Shaves UltraGel Skin Cooling Advanced Shave Serum, rather than shaving foam.

I didn't decapitate myself, and I must say it was quite a nice shave, if somewhat more time consuming than using my electric shaver.

However not entirely happy with the Wilkinson sword razor handle, as it has a little sharp bit of plastic on the head which was quite scratchy, might have to file that off!

I'd have to say that I think I'll be sticking with using a DE razor now rather than electric multiblade razors.

I started shaving with DE razors about a year or two ago now after being tired of my Fusion leaving irritation on my neck. I do suffer from acne (age 20) but only mildly. I found that since moving to DE my irritation became much better. Blades are also much cheaper!

Currently using:

Merkur 34C DE razor
Tesco DE blades
Muhle Pure Badger Hair Shaving Brush
Cella Crema Di Sapone (Almond Shaving Soap)

Usually start with a warm towel on my face to soften up the hair and open the pores up a bit. Wash face with a face scrub to get rid of old/dead skin and other crap. Then wet brush and put an almond sized piece of shaving soap into a cereal bowl (I plan on upgrading to a proper shaving bowl/mug at some point!) and work it to get a good lather up. Then apply to face and shave with the grain. Rinse face and re apply this time going half with the grain. Rinse again and re apply, then go again finally against the grain.

This technique, whilst time consuming, definitely works great for me. I never even bother applying anything after shaving as Cella is really moisturising and soft.

Would someone be kind enough to spec me up a selection? Basically my mom wants to know what I want for my birthday and tbh I'm content with what I have, but I know she likes to actually give me something so I figure I could tell my dad to pass on, and this is something i'll actually use. Budget of £100 give or take.

I currently use a Fusion and it sucks. I tend to change my beard up a bit but i'm never clean shaven so I need something that I can control and shape with. Probably a decent safety razor (Don't want to go cut-throat yet), brush and some assorted stuff.

Any Merkur DE razor is pretty damn good. I splashed out on a Merkur Futur, but the cheaper razors in the range are fantastic too.

For blades I use Merkur and Feather - mostly because I keep getting them for free on various sites! I also have about a year's worth of Personna blades. Not amazing, but do the job.

Shaving cream/soap is hard to recommend. I have tried a couple and so far my favourite is The Bluebeards Revenge! :p I slop it on my face with a nice badger hair brush. I use Poraso pre-shave cream now and then [usually if I haven't had a shower just prior to shaving].

Once done with shaving I usually go over my skin with an alum block to close up the pores and staunch any blood flow from nicks. The hair on my neck goes in 20 different directions so I catch myself a fair bit there if I dont take it slooooow!

DE shaving can seem slower than with a Fusion or Mach3, but I can shave on a Monday and go at least 2 or 3 days before I need another shave. The whole shave experience is also more enjoyable, so it's nice to take your time! :D

I agree with you on many points there. Proraso is excellent given the price, I started out on Proraso extra sensitive before moving on to Cella. DE shaving is enjoyable in my opinion as you learn it and continually improve on technique and I find it lasts me 2-3 days as well.

I had some free Personna blades though and I thought they were terrible. Not bad for free but even my Tesco 10pk blades for £2 seem better

I use king of shave products, works wounders but it makes me wounder at 25 having to shave every day to look clean.

Me too, I have very sensitive skin and KoS Sensitive is the only stuff I've found that doesn't give me irritated skin every shave. I still can't shave everyday so I shave every other. I only use disposable razors, not the super cheap ones mind. I've tried all the big brand Gillette/Wilkinson Sword etc and they go blunt stupidly quickly and cost an arm and a leg

Can anyone explain the difference of a slant bar type?

I think the slant bars have the head at an angle, thus holding the blade on a slanted angle to give a better/closer shave. Downside is that its easier to cut yourself and do damage with

The safety bar is at an angle, and the blade is also bent differently. As above, it is a closer shave but you have to be more careful! I haven't used one yet, and I love my Futur so it'll be a while before I give it a go! :p

Thanks, but are they any good though as I can't recognise most of the brands based on what is usually recommended in this thread?
