The Manly Shaving Thread

just had a quick shave with one of these http://wilkinsonsword.co.uk/men/showroom/classic (my first shave with a double edge safety razor!) i was a bit aprehensive at first.. but on my second pass it felt fine. i didnt cut myself once, but i did nip a couple of spots, which bled and hurt :p

best of all its only cost me a quid in pound world :p

I used this last night! Its not half bad for £3 (from boots). It was my first shave with a non-Gillette razor. Nicked my self a few times because I was shaving too fast. Once I slowed down it was good. It has shaved very very close except in a few places.

To call my stubble tough would be like calling the hulk "sort of strong". I'm thinking of investing in a better razor and blades, I'm just not sure which merker is best for me.

I have been busy sampling some different razor blades to see if there is a difference between the different ones on offer. I was surprised how much of a difference the blades make to my shave. I though I would post my findings just in case it helps anyone here.

1. Iridium Super
2. Astra Superior Platinum
3. Merkur Super
4. Derby Extra
5. Crystal Platinum
6. Israeli blade
7. Red Personna
8. Feather New Hi-Stainless

First place: Iridium Super
My favourite by far is the Iridium blades; sharp and glides easily over the face, gives a close shave without any nasty cuts.

Runner up: Astra Superior Platinum
The Astra blades come a close second place for me, a sharper blade and much better at dealing with a couple of days worth of stubble if you cant be bothered to shave over the weekend.

Also worth a mention: Merkur Super
The Merkur blades are good, but not worth the premium price.

The Durby's come in at 4th place. I do like the Derby blades, they are good quailty blades and last for 3 or more shaves. They offer a smooth shave and I never get any nicks or irritation when using them but I have quite a fast growing beard and they are not quite sharp enough for my tastes. They were also one of the cheapest of all the blades (Second only to the Israeli blades) that I tried, which is a bonus!

Considering a 38C starter kit as linked to here since the 34C is out of stock.

Finally run out of free blades and I'm not paying £10 to reload (although I do get about 5 shaves out of Mach 3 cartridges....)

My hair is rather soft though so I'm wondering if this is a tad overkill? Usually get rather rough/sore patches on top of my cheek/under my eye (rogue hairs need trimming :p)

Anything else I need with that starter kit? (besides tissues and Mr. Bump plasters!)

For thoes that have the Murker 34c razor can anyone do a comparison shot of the handles say against a Gilette Fusion or something. Trying to see if i can get the 34c or the 38c (with the longer handle)

Been looking to get a new razor for yonks

Always out of stock though!

Tried a safety razor, takes ****ing ages for a close shave which is unacceptable when I'm in a rush for work in the morning. No matter how manly it is, I sacked it off for my trusty Mk III Power as I value my time in bed on a cold Monday morning.

Need some info on shaving the lower neck region - I have wild trouble with this using a Merkur with Feather blades and some lovely Trumper soap. Anyway I only get a clean shave when shaving down the neck, however, get terrible razor bumps/burn. If I shave up it doesn't make a mess of skin but doesn't shave close at all. Under the chin and jaw is fine, just the annoying bit at the bottom of neck. Anyone else have this? Terribly annoying!

The Merkur 34c is approx 2/3 the length of Gillette type razors but it was no problem at all to adapt to the former. You just end up holding it in a different manner altogether.

Not regretting the jump to DE razors; shaving quicker now and almost cut free.

got this stuff the other day from traditional shaving, and i think its great. you can even use it pretty effectively even without using a brush.

smells great too. like a mixture of roses and tangerines.

5 stars :p

I got a Merkur 38c, brush, soap, pre/post cream set the other day.

I've shaved with it twice, very pleased with the results, my face has never been so smooth. It also only took 10 mins max for 2 rounds.

I did however cut myself a few times, mostly on my chin, once on my neck. I guess I need some practice. :p

One question, I guess it's not a good idea to shave over the same place the next day if you've cut yourself there? Leave it for a few days to recover?

Ah just keep shaving over it, your skin will toughen up eventually, get a nice little scar too :p.

They do my head in those razors that have disposable heads whenever I am in the supermarket I always buy the wrong kind. Why do they have different clasps ? I wouldnt mind but theres about 3 or 4 different varieties.

They should be colour coded for Idiots and people who are to busy to know what kind of razor they have.

They must make a fair packet out of these mistakes !

I prefer the kind where you just buy Razor blades but cant seem to find them anymore probably outlawed due to the Nanny State we live in.

I invested in a full straight razor set up at the end of last month and have spent the past few weeks learning to shave with a cut throat. Ultimate man point :p and it's quite an experience. Gives me plenty of time to think of jokes whilst I go through the whole palava, but I shave at night so it's no problem.

I have a Philips electric shaver that totally destroys my neck and it doesnt even look cleanly shaved afterwards.

Would a Merkur type thing help my neck at all or is my skin forever destined to become a red mess? :)

You should treat yourself & invest in a good razor, brush & soap, you may well cut yourself up a bit getting used to it, but I think it'll be better for your neck if an electric shaver is giving you grief. Get an alum block or styptic pencil too if you think you might need it.

same thing happens to me with my philips shaver. ive found using a beard trimmer without the clip a lot better but this can take slightly longer
