The the DE89L is a big web retailer for just under £20 inc. shipping. Got mine from there and then a brush and soap via the marketplace. Ordered Wednesday evening and have brush while the razor is in Post Office and other things haven't arrived yet.

Edit: Removed competitor just in case but since OcUK don't do shaving products I assumed it wasn't a problem (clarification?). Anyway, it's a huge retailer where you can get pretty much everything.

Cool thanks for the tip. :)

Success!

Just had my first shave with the Edwin DE89, pretty good for my first ever single blade shave.

Main face feels lovely and smooth, I think I might of went a little hard on my neck area as it feels like I have a touch of razor burn, rest of the face feels untouched.

I did 3 passes. One down, one to the side and one against the grain. The lucky tiger sample was quite pleasant, had a slight orange zesty smell to it, unfortunately only enough in the sample for the first lather.

Best tip I can give is don't apply ANY pressure onto your face, just let the blade glide down. My face feels baby smooth after I've put some molton brown hydrator on :).

Hi guys,

Great thread. Been reading for a long time and I have been wanting to get my first DE. The day has come! So can anyone recommend a razor blade sample pack. The one that Traditional Shave offer doesnt include Israelis or Feathers and I really wanted to try these.

And whats the best shaving cream. Im guessing Taylor of Old Bond Street?

I've had 3 shaves since about 17:30 yesterday (yes that's how bad my facial hair is) and I've cut myself to shreds.
If I apply no pressure it doesn't cut anything off and if I apply a bit of pressure I cut my face.
I also have to go over my face at least 50 times to make a difference and my chin about 100 times but even now there is still stubble on my chin.
I had a chin cut today that didn't stop bleeding until about 2pm so I had toilet paper on my chin in the office.
I'm going have to go back to electric and finish off with Protector blades.

Lmao :D

Sorry but that is class.

I don't really know what advice to give, I've only used mine once myself. Have you tried watching some shaving video's to see if you're doing it right? Here's one with the same razor you have:

This may also help for the time being:

@dmpoole

I've been using my cut throat shavette with feather blades for about 3-4 weeks now and only just starting to get really close shaves.
It's taken a lot of time and practice to to build up the muscle memory using my left hand (im right handed) but im getting there now.
At first I did cut myself a few times but no where near as bad as you, the only advice I can give is take your time!
You cant just drag them acros your face like a mach3 or you will cut yourself, you need to work methodically and slowly at first. It takes me a good 25mins to do a 3 pass shave at the moment and at first it was nearer 45 mins.
As mentioned above if your having to apply pressure for the blade to cut you probably have it at the wrong angle, to much angle and you will cut yourself, not enough angle and you will get a poor shave, you will only learn the right angle through feel and practice.
lastly if you have really heavy stubble you need to prep your face very well, shave after you shower, use a hot wet towl on your face a good few times and spend at least 5 mins working the lather into your face with a good brush.

I hope you keep with it mate, its really satisfying when you do get a good shave.

My first shave went fantastic with the DE89... my cheeks felt smooooooooooth.

I did mess up a bit on my neck though, found it hard to get the angle correct when you're working up on the neck area, so I encountered a bit of burn.

Watch the videos Poole. I didn't pick the thing up until I had watched 2 videos and done some reading.

Leave it alone now that you've cut your face up imo, nothing worse than blade shaving over cuts... *shivers* give it a few days to heal up.

I have watched at least 10 videos and read various links.
My problem is I need 3 shaves a day and my hairs are rock solid and even if I had used pressure the hairs still aren't coming off.
I also have tiny little bumps on my skin and those are the places where I was bleeding the most from.
The blade was taking the heads off them so there isn't a lot I can do about that.

3 a DAY? Do you work in the circus? All I have in my head now is a picture of a gorilla holding a chrome shaver :D.

Sounds like you have a unique problem to me... perhaps it isn't suited to you at all. With that growth you might want to consider an epilator?

Also... BLAAAADES

My thoughts after getting my DE89L. Ok, just had my first shave this morning using the Edwin Jagger DE89L and I'm more than happy with how it went. I used one of the Derby blades that came with it along with The Refinery shave gel (http://the-refinery.com/store/) that I very much like.

I honestly wasn't expecting any huge improvement over my Gillete Mach 3 which I've used for years and has given me great shaves. I really don't get the cartridge razor bashing other than for the price of the cartridges as they have given me very good shaves for years with minimal effort.

Areas of improvement over the Mach 3 are that I have no irritation with the DE89L whilst giving a very close shave. The Mach 3 while giving me a close shave as well would have left me that bit more uncomfortable afterwards

The reason I used gel and not soap and a brush is quite simply my soap hasn't arrived yet. I have Mitchells Wool Fat soap on it's way and the brush I have is Vulfix #404 "The Grosvenor" which is a cheap brush at under a tenner and a combination of badger and boar bristle. Didn't think there was much point in spending pounds on something I may or not like and it gets fairly good comments on the web for its price point.

Anyway, no nicks, toilet roll or trips to A&E and I'm more than happy. I'm also waiting delivery for the blade pack in the above pic that rexehuk posted so I'm going to have enough to last me for years.

One concern I had was that I have a small slightly raised mole that I thought was going to get levelled followed by blood everywhere. Not the case, took my time and it went perfectly. I read somebody spent 45mins on their first shave, holy smokes that's a lot of time. Out of the shower and I'd say no more than 15 mins for the shave. Pleasant experience so if you fancy a razor a bit classier looking than a Mach 3 with an overall better shave, then the DE89L comes with my recommendation.

Get yourself a merkur slant bar and some feather blades 3-4 passes no pressure at all, you will fine the merkur razors on here are not aggressive enough as in you need o put to much pressure on I d you have a thick beard like me Give it a go :)

+1 On the slant, feathers despite being sharp they can be scratchy mind, some gillette yellows might be better perhaps?

If that doesn't work then it's the 2011 muhle r41, it's a beast of a razor and is what i use, the slant nor my gem ocmm doesn't compare to this badboy, it's a straight razor on a stick.
