The Manly Shaving Thread

I was round my parents place yesterday and told them about the EJ89L that I've ordered. Dad pulled out an brush/bowl/soap kit from the early 90s that he was given but never used and his late 70s early 80s vintage Gillette TTO adjustable DE razor. I just checked and the razor goes for ~£50 used! Apparently my Grandfathers razor is about the house about somewhere so I'll have to have a rummage.

Edit: Found a picture of my Dads razor:

Postman dropped off some new blades and some new shaving soap yesterday. I've used the soap this morning and just had my best shave ever! A couple of nicks but that's okay, I'm new to this DE lark. Smooth as a babies behind. Getting a proper lather makes such a difference. I got some aftershave too, man it burns! I might have to get some balm to replace it.

Mine finally arrived today

Razor (it was meant to be a Edwin Jagger DE89L but Traditional Shaving Company screwed up and sent a DE89)

Cant wait to use them!
really annoyed with Traditional Shaving. Wont be buying anything from there in the future.

I've been reading through some of this thread and it has inspired me to get myself a proper set of shaving products. I'm currently using a hydro 5 razer, and although it leaves me with quite a smooth face, I tend to get quite a lot of irritation under my chin. I also have quite coarse stubble and really need to shave every day, though I find because of the irritation I get I tend not too which can actually make it worse for me in the long run.

It's worth noting that I also suffer from fairly sensitive and dry skin. With this in mind I have just priced up the following items in a basket over at shave shack and was looking for opinions.

I've already signed up to get the 10% discount code, and I notice that they are on quidco so by the time those 2 discounts are applied that should all come to a little under £90. I've also worked out that my blade cost will drop by at least £60 a year meaning it pays for itself completley in less than 18 months, and if I order all of that in one go I will get enough shave points to order another 30 blades seperately for free. I also figure that with this setup the only things I will need to buy in the future are soap / cream refills which come at £5 and £7 respectively, and as far as I can tell last an age.

Does anyone have any reccomendations to things I may need to change or could be missing?

Thanks :)

Your bottom piece of the head is upside down.

Thanks.

So I went for a shave today. And boy was it an experience. I had a week of growth and it went through it like a hot knife through butter. All together I did 3 passes and my face is smooth as a babys bottom. I use to use a Mach 3 and Wilkinson Quattro and neither have left my face this smooth. The only unpleasant part about it was that after I shaved my face felt a burn/sore sensation. Never really had sensitive skin before. Was this because I shaved too close? And does anyone recommend I use a aftershave balm or something?

Thanks.

Get an Alum Block, wet the block and your face with cold water and then rub the block over your face, if you have razor burn or little nicks it will cool the razor burn and close up the nicks.

Stings at first but you soon get used to it.

Just found out the gentlemans-shop.com do tax and delivery free to BFPO's so looks like I'm going to be getting me some nice decent shaving stuff.

Can someone please spec me up a brush and some products, I think I've found the razer I want which is the Merkur 9043002 Double Edge Safety Razor.

No worry dude. Had a shave today with my DE89 and it was my first nick free shave. You really must pay attention when moving from cheeks to neck in regards to the angle.

I'm sticking with NKDMAN for now... I think they are a bit more expensive than others, but you earn points and I like the website / order process.

ive decided against shaving, im going to see how long it takes to look like johnny depp
im already half way there with the looks, just need the facial hair now

I cant be a manly man when Im shaving :( due to stupidly sensitive skin.

Shaving cream = breakouts + rash + all-day redness
Fancy razors with "aloe" strip = breakouts + rash + all-day redness
Any aftershave = major rash breakout

Solution = those cheap Gillette disposables...yes those bright orange ones :(. They are the only ones I have found without that "lubricating strip".

Now all I need is hot water and one of them disposables and get a good clean shave with no issues.

It works but its not manly man :( Wish I could use brush with cream etc...or those hot-foam dispensers...and a nice dude-razor instead of a disposable. Oh well.

well just had a shave with my Merkur 39c slant and what can i say im very impressed, very close shave and really smooth. :D

Can someone please give me a run down of the benefits of using Razors compared to normal cartridge Razors?

Electric shaving always gave me a rash, then wet cartridge shavers were really nice to use, I got bought a Gillette ProGlide and have been using it for years and never had any problems, except the actual cost of the blades themselves.

Are their any particular advantages/disadvantages to using a safety razor?

Cheaper blades, closer shave, one blade which cuts down on razor burn.

Proper mans shave as well so you can sit in the pub and claim to be more Alpha than the knobs using FusionProGlideGillette9bladeshavesystem :)

Hi Boys!! :)

I haven't read the whole thread (as I'm rather tired!)

But can anyone recommend a decent electric shaver? My dad's one is apparently not working well at all anymore and it's pretty old so I've decided as a random treat I am going to buy him a new one.

I gathered from one of the posts that Braun is a good make but I've noticed they all appear to be a straight shaving head rather than the three round blades. He currently has one with the latter so I wondered whether straight is better than three or vice versa?

I have looked at reviews for Philips but the main moan is that you have to go over the same area several times.
My dad's very fragile at the moment so I want to find the most effective and efficient shaver so that he can do it quickly then rest again.

Can anyone help?

(And in case anyone asks he doesn't like razor blades :p)
