Wow, starting with feather blades....that's brave lol.

You will love it mate, some very nice kit there & I'll bet you don't go near a cartridge system again.

I'm trying to decide on a pre shave cream/oil. Any suggestions?

I bought one of those alum blocks, even if I don't cut myself I rub it over my face. It feels quite good, has antiseptic & closes the pores.

Yep I use one of those, very handy.

Heard good things about Proraso & Truefitt & Hill pre shave, I might get round to trying one or the other but right now I don't really feel the need.

I love Feathers but I have found these even better

http://www.shaving-shack.com/10-gillette-7-o-clock-double-edged-razor-blades.html

I enjoyed using Feathers so much that I was reluctant to try anything else. These Gillette blades seem just as sharp as Feathers but I find the shave much smoother. It's all subjective however. I would strong advise sampling these. They are cheaper than Feathers too.

Agreed, these are my favourite blade. I like Feathers, but not as much as these.

I tend to find that some my my razors are more picky with blades than others. I find that my Muhle R41 benefits from the Feathers or Gillette yellows, as does the Merkur 39c. However my 1950s Gillette Aristocrat Junior, which is a bit more mild than the other two is fine with any of the blades that I have left over from my initial sample packs (except Derby's, can't get on with them!)

Also agreed! Love the 7'o clocks and think they will be my razor of choice for the foreseeable future :)

Can anyone recommend me a good aftershave? Looking to spend around £20 ish. Previously used Boss and the like, but am happy to try something a little more traditional :)

Recently converted from canned-foam to shaving stick & brush: a massive difference in both performance and price!

Will be hopefully purchasing a Mekur or similar 'proper' razor in the near future and are quite seduced by the prospect of undertaking real man shaving :p

Can't be bothered to scroll through the whole of this thread so just thought I'd ask.

Can anyone recommend a good shaving cream I tried the Taylor of Old Bond Street avocado shaving cream and found it to do the job a lot better than the Gillette of old plus had a nice aroma to it and seemed to lather up pretty well but for you experienced shavers that have tried other creams which ones a partially better was looking at Truefitt and Hill creams are they worth the extra not worried about it being more as long as they have better properties or any others worth considering? (p.s. dont want soap)

The last stuff I brought was Proraso shaving cream, it's very nice, I shall probably stick with it & get more once this one runs out.

Has anyone ever used a shaving trimmer or w/e they're called instead of a razor?

I always used a razor but was contemplating buying a trimmer cause when the beard gets too long it really hurts to shave it with razor (I use Gillette Fusion, brush and shaving cream).

Or maybe I need to invest in a better razor... any ideas what I should get? Razor / Trimmer?

Thanks

I used to have that issue when using those terrible razors since switching over to a proper safety razor it doesnt hurt at all. once had a beard admittedly not inches long but could have done with a trimmer but decided to get straight in with the razor bit worried at first but it cut fantastically didnt get caught or pull or nip. I'd go merkur i got this one http://www.traditionalshaving.co.uk...0002/268151/Futur-Safety-Razor-Brushed-Chrome which is brilliant can adjust the amount that the blade is exposed has 5 settings but there are cheaper ones and obviously alternate makes which would do the job.

I find the electric trimmers/shavers give me more skin irritation than a normal razor for some reason,i think its becase its rubbing the skin more or something i dont understand it. I've noticed the gillette fusion 5 blades wear out too quickly aswell and the blades cost a fortune so im going to try one of these merkurs as everybody in here seems to say they are great.

I prefer the T&H scents but i dont think the lather is as good (thick / slick). I get irritation (burning) with tobs though so i stick with T&H.

If you want a cheap excellent cream then go to your nearest superdrug and get some palmolive. Lathers better than both the above imho
