Got most of my stuff now, hoping the brush/razor sample pack arrives today so I can have a go tonight - eventually plumped for;

Merkur 38c
Truefitt & Hill Ultimate Comfort
Edwin Jagger Pure Badger Brush
Various sample blades
Alum Block

Just need a stand now I reckon, anyone found a decent razor/brush stand that doesnt cost the earth?

just ordered a starter kit from traditional shaving company

Qty Description Colour

1 Black badger - Tortoise
1 Taylor of Old Bond Street eton college
1 Razor blade sample pack (35x)
1 Edwin Jagger DE89L Chrome Plated Lined

For the record, google just told me if you enter the code "tsr" at the checkout, you get a 10% discount :D which works, so that brought it down to £45 inc delivery for the lot (paid £5 extra for the razor blade sample pack)

excited now :p :p

first shave today, wasn't bad but I was in a hurry so finished off with my mach 3 thingy, clearly potential with the vision but I need to work on my technique

on the plus side no massive gushing wounds :D

I've heard you're not a particular fan of gashes.....

Hmm, I've ended up ordering 2 razors from different places, and the one i want to send back is part of the package, but i dont want to send the rest of the package back...probably easier to sell the razor?

BNIB Edwin Jagger DE89L, not even received it yet, is there anywhere I could shift this easily?

Thanks,

Tom.

It's been a couple of months now since I cut my face to shreds with my first shave. Now that the trauma has diminished I thought I'd give it another go! The blades I used with my first shave were feathers which I don't think I should have used to start off with! What blades should I try instead? I still use my brush and the bluebeards revenge shaving cream and need to place another order so will get some blades as well to go with my 34C.

so had a few shaves with the merkur now, I still find myself finishing up with my mach 3, is this normal? will I get more confident?

I'm shaving on a lowish exposure setting so I'm presuming the more blade I 'show' the better, closer and more dangerous the shave is?

initial rating 3/10 but I'll persevere and hopefully that will improve :)

Try Derbys. They're pretty standard for beginners.

Looking at that razor it looks similar to my Merkur Futur, in that it has adjustable settings for the blade? I started off at 2 I think, and I'm now at 5 out of 6, and it certainly makes a difference. I also noticed you only seemed to have feather blades? Might want to try some Derby's while your starting out as the feathers are a bit lethal.

My facial hair grows very fast. After a day I have a noticeable stubble that looks good, after 2 days its thicker and looks messy, and after 3 I look like a different person.

Gillette just isn't cutting it (get the pun ;)). I want something that glides over my face like a hot knife through butter. I want a very close shave and I don't want to pay £20 for a pack of blades (lol Gillette).

Tell me about Murkur.

how many passes are you doing?

i do two passes with my merkur 34c (gillette 7 o'clock yellow or green blades ATM):-

- first straight down face and neck
- second across face and up against the grain on the neck

that gets me a BBS shave.

two passes with two lots of lathering

its areas like my chin, upper lip etc.. that I have no faith in approaching with the merkur, it shaves there but not close enough for my liking, I can whip the mach 3 in and finish off everything in a few seconds, I'm sure I would get there with the merkur but I would expect blood and a lot of time to achieve the same result.

If the head of the razor is anything like the future, that's the same places I also had trouble with. I also have a Merkur travel razor which I think it something like the 34c, and I have to admit it is far easier to shave with that than the futur because of the smaller head.
