Looking at buying the following paying the Extra for the Merkur 33c

http://www.traditionalshaving.co.uk...onalshaving/_STA-CRE-NOR/268168/Shaving-Cream

Would anyone recommend anything for the same price range. Looking to spend under £50 ideally.

i dont know about the 33c, i bought a 34c and its great.

TOBS cream and the EJ brush are good.

i'd buy a sample blade pack instead of 10x of the same blade and a Styptic Pencil.

with one of the 10% discount codes (bandb) thats just under £50

Need some advice. I'm going in the army in 2 months so need to get myself a decent razor. At the moment I just use an electric beard trimmer.

Looking at that starter kit above but with the 34c. Whats the difference between cream and soap? Which one to go for?

No difference really - only personal preference. Cream is easier to lather with at first, but soap isn't that difficult. Soap will last longer.

Any of the creams/soaps will be fine - just pick a scent that you like the sound of. I use Eton College, which is ace. Their sandal wood and 'Jermyn St' are also good.

Anyone here got the The Bluebeards Revenge Scimitar? Would this be suitable for a first foray into safety razors? Am considering this or the DE89 / 34C but have to admit the marketing side of me has made me want this :p :p

That and the other bluebeard stuff seems to get v. good reviews and it has won a few awards:

The 34C is commonly recommended for beginners and for good reason. I'm not familiar with that monstrosity you've posted so will defer to those who have used one. It looks bloody awful though.

merkur barber pole razor's on ebay £15 & £17 delivered - search 'merkur barber', normally £40'ish

the head looks the same as my 34c, anyone used one of those?

Other than the branding, its not exactly fiat multipla vs aston martin is it, more like DB9 vs XKR

I finally got round to trying this!

now waiting for this little lot to turn up

Merkur Vision Safety Razor
Alum Block
Feather Hi-Stainless Double Edged Razor Blades
Kent BLK2 Pure Grey Badger Shaving Brush (Black)
The Bluebeards Revenge Luxury Shaving Cream (100ml)

anything else I will need before I shred my face to pieces? :D

Correct angle, no pressure, prep well.

My Edwin Jagger brush, Razorock XXX and Proraso post-shave cream arrived, and I got a free sample of Bluebeards revenge post-shave cream. The cream and brush are excellent, but I think I might prefer the Bluebeards stuff to the proraso. It smells nicer, and it's less viscous, which means there's less rubbing to get good coverage - in theory, I haven't tried it yet, I'll use it tomorrow and report back. Saying that though, I'm very impressed with the Proraso cream, much better than the Nivea balm I was using before, and a brush is much better than the Nivea Gel I was using.

Since moving to the old school shaving process with my new stuff I can confirm I am able to shave the night before and don't have stubble until gone 6pm the next day, which I have never been able to do with normal wet shavers and certainly not with electric shavers. Takes more time and care no question but the feeling and closeness if much better.

I thought I would have a look at this as I HATE shaving ATM. After as little as 5-6 hours I get a shadow :(

For a beginner, how long does it take (roughly) to shave using the DE method as opposed to the cartridge shavers which takes me roughy 4-5 mins tops

I don't think it's great as a speedy alternative, at least if you're using a brush anyway. If you just use whatever shaving gel or cream you're using now, but get a DE razor, you'll find it'll take the same time (you might have to take a little more care, but practice soon sorts that out), but you'll get a nicer shave with less razor burn. Not to mention it's cheaper.

I'll must say since I got mine I have never cut myself with it, however I was getting razor burn that was rather annoying. With plenty of practice shaving almost daily, I have found the perfect angle that shaves perfectly with no irritation or anything, now I know what I am doing it really is awesome!
