it's just a confidence thing, you'll be doing the same with the merkur in a couple of seconds when you get used to it.

EDIT: maybe not if as above, it's a very chunky razor

And explain to my why you need to spend £40 (ish) on a Merkur to hold these blades? Surely there's cheaper razors that can hold these sort of blades?

EDIT: Just spotted the 33C (Merkur) on one of the above links for about £20 - Seems more reasonable.

Or a popular choice is the Edwin Jaggers, DE89 series...many prefer them to the 34C, where as the 33c is very light one iirc?

Get one for christmas :D My missus bought me my 37C 3 years ago, best present I've had for ages.

You don't have to spend that much. I've now probably spent around £200 on razors, blades, brushes, stands, bowls and enough soap, cream, pre and post shave bits to keep both my home and travel kits in stock for a very long time. I'm also getting a far better shave than I ever had with Gillette or Wilkinson razors.

I originally went with the Futur because it was supposed to be a good beginners razor, but also capable of a very very good shave once you become more experienced, and it is certainly the case I can get a far better shave with it than the travel razor. The travel razor however is far easier to use..

If I was starting over now, I would probably go with something like this as a starter kit -

Any long handled Razor. My only gripe with the travel razor I have is the short handle. I'd probably go with something like the Merkur 25C, with Derby blades to start with.

I'd then get the best brush I could afford, probably a silvertip. A better brush makes so much difference.

Soaps and creams, I haven't tried it but the palmolive stuff if I was on a budget I guess from other peoples views.

Then use an old mug for getting a lather.

Only other thing I wouldn't do without now is Proraso pre/post shave cream.

ended up with a DE89L and DE89BA11, sending the L back. Ordered the L first, then found out about the BA11 so cancelled the order for the L, which the shop acknowledged but then accidently sent it out anyway. Not the end of the world, at least i got to compare them :)

BA11 is the knarled finish, L is the lined finish.

Absolutely love the quality of the finish on these :)

Oh, and I have already jumped in and had a go. DE89L with Derby Extra blades, Edwin Jagger badger brush and Taylor of old Bond Street Eton shaving cream. Massively impressed! Given it's my first go, the only bit i struggled with was my neck. My face is far smoother than it has ever been previously, so cannot complain at all, and the whole process was therapeutic almost :)

That's not too bad at all! Rather nice price considering how much you save over a year on blades alone! I just had a shave n my face feels loooosh! I have the Murkur 34C HD.

My problem is dry (even if I use shaving cream) skin caused by the water so I just tend to use a balm to clear it up.

Yup, using the 3 pass method my face is smoother than ive ever felt it, by a mile....really remarkable for my first effort! Can't wait to see how amazing it is once i get the hang of it

Watch you don't cut yourself, only recommendation I can make is be slow with no pressure.

I sliced below my nose once and it hurt. The blood was pouring out as these things can cut deep.

I have cut myself with a mach 3! Lesson learnt there :) i had a few little teeny nicks where I passed over a bit again that had already had the cream taken off, but nothing major. It feels very natural with the balance etc, gained a lot of confidence by the end! I used absolutely no pressure beyond what was being generated by the (very decent) weight of the razor, almost holding it limp as I pulled it :)

Most important thing I find is to shave right after a shower or bath. The difference between shaving at that point, and just shaving from cold is huge.

The bits I struggle to get smooth are the tip of my chin and low parts of my neck.

Best shave was from just sitting in the bath with a mirror on side and taking my time :)

I hate shaving after a shower. I know that i'll get a better shave due to the hairs being ripe for shaving so i've started to use the boiling water from the kettle to lather the brush and then my face.

And then i have my shower.

Feels great!
