Much appreciated mate, had another user PM me in trust about this. I'm tempted to buy a set and then buy a load of blades on top, what's a good brand of blade to go for?

Id say get the 35 blade sample pack, which is one of the options on that kit :) for a fiver it allows you to try loads :)

We're not unironically recommending Derby blades are we? They're terrible. A good razor will allow you to adjust sharper, better blades down to something which works with your skin.

e : I've read some of the thread.

I'd like to buy in bulk if possible instead of faffing about ordering blades every week! :p

Thinking about buying like a pack of 200-300 if that's possible?

It's possible but it is risky unless you've identified the blade you want. You'll pay over the odds for a sample pack and most of them won't work for you. For the one(s) that do, you buy 300 of them.

Alright, über-gay post incoming!

My snout hair is quite thick and very firm. Imagine getting a very coarse file and rubbing it on your fingers, that's what my stubble feels like. I want to know whats a good blade on majority vote because i'm about to buy that £45 set but I want blades to go on top!

A great blade can make up for an average cream and an average razor.

An average blade cannot make up for a great cream and a great razor.

Try some Feathers. There are better blades out there but they get increasingly more expensive for decreasing benefit.

e : also, consider your preparation, as thick, firm hairs are really difficult to shave adequately.

I tend to shave in the shower and i'll usually do it towards the end when my faces is warmed up and hydrated and my bristles are softer. Tempted to buy these 'Derby' blades as i've been reading reviews on Amazon and people seems to love them.

Always told myself I'd try going away from gilette stuff mach triple plus power whatever I use when I run out of blades.... and since I'm off next week I can shop and have it delivered when I'm in the house.

Let's say I'm comfortable spending a meagre amount to start with and I want to buy everything I'd need to start off with. Say, £30 to £50. And also that I have a medical condition that prevents me reading this massive thread to pick up tips...

What do I buy?

Buchtis the Edwin Jagger de89 is about £22, but more like £45 when you've added a decent brush and shaving cream, see my posts above from this week.

That but only one razor if you choose the 35 sample pack

They're out of stock of the 34c tom, they also don't have the blades or cream that Magnolia said to buy.

The site you recommended, Magnolia, is about £8 more.

I've found blades on eBay. 20 of the feathers for £9.

I just need to find a brush, on the site I'm getting the safety razor and cream from I think.

Although I'm too tired now, so I think I'll pick this up tomorrow and order.

i know they are, but if you read what i quoted i recommended the Edwin Jagger DE89, which IS in stock, and is also what is in my photo :p

They do sell the feathers that everyone reccomends, and 20 would cost you £6.30 not £9 after the discount code. The taylors of old bond street eton college is a very well recommended cream in this thread too, same brand as the one recommended by magnolia.

FWIW i bought my DE89BA11 from nkdman, can't complain with the service. The DE89L and other bits were from tradionalshave, and also v. good service.

Merkur 34c vs EJ DE89:

Not bad when it's £8 cheaper ;)

cream starter kit + a styptic pencil from traditional shaving works out £47.25 with discount (tsr or bandb)

Black badger - Ivory
Taylor of Old Bond Street eton college (smells nice, i'm using jermyn street at the moment)
Razor blade sample pack (35x)
Edwin Jagger DE89L Chrome Plated Lined
+
Styptic Pencil

i've not used that razor but the EJ razors or merkur 34 HD are recommended for beginners. i use a 34c HD.
