The Marvels

The big problem with strong female characters is they don't know how to write or cast them half the time. We have had strong female characters for decades. They aren't new. What is new is this strange dichotomy that masculine men are toxic but then we are told to celebrate "strong women" who behave exactly like these men. We are shown a 120lb wet woman throwing around 220lb men like they are rag dolls and told that this is normal and realistic. Its not even "look, she has super powers guys" its "look, shes a strong women who is just as capable as any man". Black widow kind of gets away with it but fundamentally she isn't a leading character in the MCU. Her film was awful and I don't think much of the blame can sit with Johannsen.

They are so obsessed with strong women being strong women that they can't understand the core idea that you have to make characters have personality, flaws and nuance. They don't seem to understand that the only people who like super on the nose dialogue about how wonderful women are or how rubbish men are happen to be the sort of people who have no real interest in the film beyond its social commentary credentials.
Yep, nail on the head with that. Basically what I wanted to say :)

They are too busy emasculating the men and turning the strong female characters into what the men used to be.

But there are no story arcs, they are just all impossibly powerful and have no weaknesses or personalities.

There have been many fantastic strong female characters, like Ripley for example. She is strong, in a believable way, whilst retaining her feminity.

The Marvels is obviously not for me but when I asked a few women in my life about it the general sentiment was: "I'm not really into superhero films and If I would watch one I would like to see strong muscly hot men instead of lesbian looking women"

What's the target audience of this film?

Themselves, same as always.

This whole M-SHE-U disaster has never been about WOMEN at all, it's always been about the activists themselves.

And you wonder why so many young girls have self image issues…

Could it also be that they have realised that can never emulate the traits that their "strong female character" heroes have and that toxic femininity is telling them they should also be like, demanding a "you slay queen, you don't need no man" attitude which for the vast majority just isn't a constructive attitude to take into life?

I haven't seen this yet, but Marvel has a lot of problems way above how to correctly cast females.

1) The Eternals.....So far it's the only marvel film I've watched that I disengaged from totally, and didn't make it to the end.
2) She-hulk....I'm guessing this was a thing in the comics somewhere, I was a marvel comic reader in the early to mid 70s and never came across it. Seems pointless and have had no desire to watch it.
3) The black guy taking over as Capt America....with absolutely no superpowers at all, but he is still Capt america...what the hell is going on there...again I assume this happened in some of the comics when they were running out of stuff.
4) Secret invasion...watched 1 episode and just gave up.
5) A female thor (???)...played by a 7 stone woman ????

To be honest in the era I was reading the comics I'd never heard of Black widow or Hawkeye nevermind some of the above....I'm guessing they were fringe characters or only came to the fore after I stopped reading, but it certainly seems an increasing stretch that they are pulling out really REALLY fringe characters and making them central.

So I'm guessing this film is just more evidence that the MCU has run it's course......its a bit like disney trying to wring even last cent out of the Star wars franchise with tangential series

From a fans point of view, both franchises need a complete break for several years, and then revisit the core characters (this multi-verse thing is going to give them the ability to do that), but given the zillions that disney has paid for both franchises, they are never going to make that decision.

To be fair the whole original arch of the Avengers was done incredibly well, hard to comprehend how far ahead they were thinking when they were doing the first Ironman movies etc, but it is doomed to failure if they expect that level of success to continue, and in trying to force the issue it's just getting 'boring'.

For example, when you've done 1 liveaid, the feeling when for the 10th time a new gen of performers come together to do a live charity concert it is never going to be as good as the first couple.

'The boys' shows that if done right, you don't need a long lineage or a body of canonical tomes to makes something that is fresh and engaging in a superhero world. Yes i know that it's based on a comic book series, but frankly compared to Marvel/Avengers, the set of people that had a knowledgebase/ preconceived expectation of what they were going to see must have been effectively zero.

I’m actually starting to like Brie. Even she knows the character was **** and don’t tell me she isn’t pretty.

You know if maybe she had played a character like, I dunno know, let me think about it, hold up, I got it, A character like Valkyrie she might have been a hit.

As for Kamala. 100% not the actress and don’t care about her looks. Buttttttttt

Self insert into a comic that failed multiple times.

Lead in video game that failed.

TV show. Nobody watch it lol

Let’s throw her into a film with two other characters that no one else likes.

I personally don't find her attractive.

I tend to agree. I see more attractive women just out and about in my daily life. She's not ugly but certainly not the beauty that she's held up to be by some. She can act though, but only if she's given a good script to work with. Hence she was great in The Room and poor in Marvel and Skull Island.

Agree with all of this.

Hey maybe I just like damaged goods and feel pity for her having to act in this.

As for Superhero looks. Ain’t that the point? Peak of human form? Men buff and Females athletic?

Then you have the Xmen, when you can do what the hell you want depending on the mutation.

So basically an all-female/diverse female cast - written and dirfected by women - the diversity dream ticket, no stupid (white) men ruining things and together the best they can come up is the Marvel's biggest ever box office disaster...

THAT DOESN'T APPEAL TO WOMEN...

And people still trying to say Marvel and modern entertainment in general doesn't have a woke problem...

:D

Just some notes for Disney:

1) Men don't want to watch women behaving in a stoic masculine way

2) Women don't want to watch women behaving in a stoic masculine way

3) Men don't want to watch men being emasculated and behaving like pussies

4) Women don't want to watch men being emasculated and behaving like pussies

This is why their box office takings are dropping like a brick off a cliff

And how did we get to this state of affairs?

Because productions are being driven by identity first and quality and catering to the audience are nowhere to be seen. The link between the BO disasters and downfall of Marvel and the direction the IP has been taken is undeniable.

Anyone watched this film? Is it entertaining?

Most YT/online stuff are OpEd - doesn’t seem to be anything who s genuinely watched the damn film.

$111mil global taking isn’t a good starting for MCU films considering most of their films have taken that in US domestic opening weekend alone.

What’s the difference between international and global…

Once you take away all the "OMG 10/10 its the bestest thing eva!!!!!" & "OMG 0/10 it actually gave me aids" rubbish, most reviews seem to say "It's OK-ish, some story issues as always, far too much poor CGI but overall its just OK/inoffensive" etc.

What’s the difference between international and global…

International doesn't include US Domestic box office and on the other side, Global usually (but not always) does. However bad reporters will often mix those around and use Global to mean International which can lead to lots of confusion.
