* The Metal Thread *

I'm looking to expand my interest in metal. I like Metallica, but struggle to find other bands that I like. I guess I'm after good riffing and non-screamy vocals. Any ideas? I do enjoy Reign in Blood if that helps, but I'm after something a bit less ominous.

What metallica do you like?

Try 'Cloudkicker', great solo project which is mostly metal and instramental. Listen to 'Beacons' and 'The Descovery' on his bandcamp page: http://cloudkicker.bandcamp.com/

But in all honesty if you only enjoy Metallica maybe you should be listening to rock instead :p

Or open up your mind and try to enjoy harsh vocals, think of them as an additional instrament. The human mind naturally objects to shouting and screaming, but once you get past the 'I'm listening to music for entertainment, does it really matter if the vocals are harsh and agressive?' wall, even the most extreme vocals can become immensely enjoyable, when coupled with the instraments of course :p

edit : Just to let you know as an example, I didn't like Meshuggah when I first heard them, but now they are my favourite band, took me about 2 years to get into them.

On an un-related note, really enjoying the new Gorguts album at the moment, album of the year so far for me! :)

Thanks, I'll check them out!

Listened to the new Five Finger Death Punch album, Wrong Side of Heaven Righteous Side of Hell on the way up to manchester today and think its rather good. The live 2nd cd is very good as well.

Like the sound of the new Devil Driver track as well, hope the new album is as good.

I'll be Mr Obvious and ask have you listened to much Anthrax/Megadeth? Other stuff i can suggest for great riffs and clean vocals are Sonata Arctica, Gamma Ray, Dark Angel and definitely the mighty Testament, especially the first five albums.

Consider:

Iron Maiden - what is there to say? :p

Try: Run to the Hills (Album), The Trooper (song)

Judas Priest - Can be hit and miss but some very good songs to be found here :)

Try: British Steel (Album), Painkiller (song)

Accept - German version of Priest is the easiest way to describe them.

Only just into them myself but hear good things about Balls to the Wall (Album) and currently loving Hung, Drawn and Quartered (song)

Iced Earth - Power/Thrash mixture. Fair few songs based around Norse mythology (iirc...)

Try: Night of the Stormrider (Album). If you like thet check out the stunning 'Alive in Athens'

Manowar - usually very clear lyrics! Power Metal! :D

Try: Battle Hymns, Warriors of the World (Albums), Power of Thy Sword (song)

Evile - Thrash with blazing solos, very similar to Metallica - clean/clear lyrics

Try: Enter the Grave, Five Serpents Teeth (Albums), Thrasher (song)

Should find something in there you can get along with :)

For anyone liking the sludge metal with a bit of psych, Kylesa - "Unspoken"

And an older track of theirs "Where The Horizon Unfolds"

new track from Fleshgod's new album. Anyone who liked Dimmu in their PEM era and then thought they went downhill after should definitely check them out.

Are any of you watching bloodstock? it's been streaming legally for free on dailymotion. Only Lamb of god left to play in about 10 minutes from now. Tomorrow Slayer, Anthrax and others will be playing.
Here's a link to the stream

Just got back from there today. Was brilliantly awesome. Discovered loads of new bands to listen to as well as getting to see a few old favourites. Amazing weekend :)

Absolutely amazing.

Single handedly restored my interest in metal again.

I was worried that the handful of live shows they did was a one off a few years ago, but this was worth the wait. There are a few tracks on the album that hark back to a bit of early carcass (which personally didn't do it for me), but this is my album of the year so far. Mount of execution is getting the repeat button treatment a lot :)
