* The Metal Thread *

It's a real shame that Metallica have lost their 'art' when it comes to their music. IMO I think they have become dull and unimaginative. There are a whole range of bands out there now that surpass these guys in every way. Slipknot ('All Hope is Gone' was/is brilliant metal and a real step up from their old stuff). Megadeth (ironically putting out consistently better stuff). Iron Maiden (Great to see Eddie the Head still fronting up to some great music). Even the likes of Trivium, Stone Sour and Killswitch Engage are putting together more technically and musically accomplished music.

IMO of course.

I was just thinking this last night when I was watching their anniversary stuff on YouTube. I didn't like any of the new stuff, and to be honest I really don't think they can perform well anymore.

I don't believe Kirk has ever been a great guitarist. Lars used to include some really technical drumming in their early stuff, but now his kit is quarter of the size and it just sounds boring. I don't like the way James has changed his singing voice either, he sounds more like a pop star than a metal singer.

They are a very over-hyped band IMO. Whilst I do like their earlier stuff a lot, there are many many other bands out there that I feel deserve the attention more than Metallica do.

I would squarely lay the blame of Metallica's downfall at Lars' feet, the guy got some money and became complacent and lazy, he cant even go more than two minutes in the studio without falling back on pro tools to make his beats sound consistent.

Try this, think of your favourite drummer and place him in Metallica, how much better/worse would the band be? I'd pay money for them to replace Lars with Gene Hoglan....oh my god would that make me moist!

I agree - it's amazing how much different they sound with a properly technically proficient drummer. I still listen to them with Joey Jordison at Download 04 - excellent.

Would have to agree with the Lars Ulrich criticisms, somewhere along the line he seemed to get lazy and musically stopped developing, maybe he's just unispired by Metallica's song writing over the last few years, a great song will often bring the best performance out of a musician and Metallica haven't written a great song for years.

Some of the riffs still sound nice, but Death Magnetic for instance just sounds like a load of riffs tacked together but imo has no great songs. What happened to stuff like The Four Horsemen, Seek & Destroy, Ride The Lightning, Fade To Black, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Battery, Master Of Puppets, Sanitarium, I could go on, these were great songs regardless of genre.

Going back to Ulrich though, he really needs to up his game.

This kid from Korn puts Ulrich with all his experience to shame.

Enjoying the new Metallica EP even though it does sound like lots of riffs attached together.
I don't care what anyone says - I love Lars Ulrich's drumming.

Funny how nobody picks on the other 3 members for not 'getting any better' which they haven't.
Both Hetfield & Hammett are playing exactly the same as they did on Kill Em All.
All this Lars hate is nonsense.
None of them are musically amazing compared to most metal/thrash whatever you want to call them bands but it's the noise they make together that's important.
I called my bass player out on this point, he too was slagging Lars off so I put Death MMagnetic through our 3K rig and asked him to point out where Lars was crap and of course he couldn't.
He then said 'It's more when he's playing live' - shut up.

It not that he's crap, it's that he's boring. It's dull unimaginative monkey drumming. Hetfields voice has gotten progressively weaker and just doesn't cut through the way it used to and as for Hammett he's folded to some strong arming into losing his identity in the band, solos gone, intelligent riffage gone. It's just got no direction and sounds flat IMO. There isn't anything there that makes you thrash out the same songs over and over. Nothing that makes you crank it and go "**** yeah" and raises the hairs on the back of your kneck. I'm not sure why you're comfortable supporting mediocrity. Is it out of some feeling of loyalty for a band clearly past its prime?

I agree with what you're saying Dimple, Metallica never has been about self indulgent, technically perfect musicianship, it was always about great songs and great riffs, played with phenomenal power and passion. This is why i've always been a massive fan of theirs, they've never appeared vain or fake like many of these bands coming through today.

Metallica got Metal more into the mainstream without selling out, they opened doors and created opportunities for many metal bands by doing so.

My criticisms of Metallica are borne out of frustration more than anything, they were so ridiculously good for those first half dozen albums or so, but then the writing/playing seemed to take a nose dive, maybe those earlier albums are so good that they're impossible to live up to.

Don't get me wrong though, I still consider them to be a great band, and Death Magnetic deinitely had moments of greatness, overall it is the best thing they've recorded in years, I spin it up myself regularly.

The Lars Ulrich criticisms may seem harsh but imo he's not the drummer he was, who knows why? I think it's as much to do with the material of latter years not being as good/inspirational, and so as you say, it is as much the fault of the rest of the band as is his.

Anyway, giving the new EP a spin as I type and so far I'm liking it! Long Live Metallica!

Given the new Metallica ep a couple of listens now, ok in places I suppose but nothing particularly inspiring for me, disappointing.

Why can't they write stuff like this anymore?
