I decided to have a good listen to Death Magnetic and Beyond Magnetic because of the Lars hate about his drumming.
I honestly couldn't hear in any of the songs where he could do anything more to improve them, he does what is right.
What do you expect him to do, put 200bpm double bass drums in on every song and a million rolls per second drum fills?
His drumming is perfect for what they are doing so don't blame him but the songs they are doing.
It would be nice to see what he could do with a band like Slayer.

It's mainly when they play their old stuff, he simply misses notes out. I've seen live stuff of theirs when they play Creeping Death for example, and he simply misses half of the bass pedal notes out - or on fills, he just does it all on the snare drum. Its boring to me, and its almost lazy in a way.

Can anyone reccomend some good melodic death metal bands and albums?

I've been listening to arch enemies "burning bridges" and it rocks my socks off. Best album I've heard in ages.

More like this please, perhaps some reccomendations of some bands that are a bit more obscure as I can easily find popular stuff on review sites etc.

Thanks!

Machine Head's live album "Hellalive" is great too!
Not a huge fan, they grate on me somehow. Maybe robb's monotone vocals holding the same key for too long

"Here me nooooooooooooooow"

"Let freedom ring with a shotgun blaaaaaaaaaast" :D

Guy is like a foghorn.

Thanks!

Kalmah's 12 Gauge is pretty good, Children of Bodom are also a pretty good melo-death band, the best entry point is probably Are You Dead Yet? But my personal favourite will always be Follow The Reaper.

Being just about the best Melodeath band around right now, anything by Insomnium is a good bet. Their latest album 'One for Sorrow' is ace, but so is anything they've ever put out. Check out Mortal Share, Down with the Sun, Through the Shadow and Weather the Storm on YouTube for a taster.

Also check out Ghost Brigade (all three albums are great, but their second 'Isolation Songs' is a good starter), Scar Symmetry and Solution .45 (Christian Alvestam is immense - you may want to check out Universum's second album, Mortuus Machina, which he did guest vocals on) and, if you're still after more, go with Before the Dawn. Oh, and there's always the go-to Melodeath band - In Flames! :D

Any body else listened to the stuff from Randy Blythes side project Halo of Locusts? Seems pretty good to me and will keep me happy until the new LOG album turns up at the end of Jan.

Omnium Gatherum.

Don't really know which of the albums to start you off on but I started with "Redshift". The vocals on there are a bit weak, but I found they grew on me and they suit the album quite well. Their latest album "New World Shadows" (released this year) seems to have got raving reviews amongst the Melodic Death Metal fans. I also really like their earlier album "Spirits and August Light", it's a bit more raw, but many of the melodies are awesome.

From "Redshift":

For Melodic Death metal you cannot beat Opeth.

The best albums are: 'My arms, your hearse' and 'Ghost Reveries'.

Some Djent may excite you too.

The Devin Townsend Project
Skyharbour
TesseracT

- these are my favourite bands at the moment!

This is my Favourite song at the moment!

Been mainly listening to metalcore recently. Bands like Parkway Drive, Born to Suffer, As I Lay Dying. Oh and Amon Amarth, love them.

As for metallica, their old stuff is 100% better than their new stuff, period.

I love my metal, but a few genres im having a lot of trouble getting into, mainly the screaming howling vocals, i need to have a clear singer with my metal, love lots of old school stuff like iron maiden, megadeth, metallica, queensryche, dio, judas priest, hammerfall, iced earth, i love the guitar playing in metal but the recent upoheaval of screaming vocals puts me off, any recommendations for a strictly old school type of metal fan
