* The Metal Thread *

I would squarely lay the blame of Metallica's downfall at Lars' feet, the guy got some money and became complacent and lazy, he cant even go more than two minutes in the studio without falling back on pro tools to make his beats sound consistent.

I wouldn't call him lazy.

He was pretty proactive suing Napster after all :D

That's like comparing apples to oranges.
You need to compare bands like Evile and Savage Messiah to Metallica.

Both bands far more listen-able than the current stuff that Metallica are producing... Speaking of production - they need to get someone that doesn't distort the crap out of their albums. Death Magnetic sounds horrendous, so much so that anything on it that sounds catchy is soon ruined by clipped and fuzzy kicks and snares.

Can anyone reccomend some good metal live albums?

I have,

Kreator - Live Kreation
Cathedral - Anniversary
Symphony X - Live on the Edge of Forever
Emperor - Live Inferno

I really enjoy these albums, could anyone reccomend some of similar quality? I like the ones that sound like you're in the crowd not polished too much in the studio afterwards.

Thanks!!

Kreator - Out of the Dark...

Great live EP from their early days.

Actually hadn't heard of either of those bands, just had a quick listen on youtube at work and they seem good - wil check them out properly when I get home! :)

I do like bands where I can actually understand the singer :p

The Lars Ulrich criticisms may seem harsh but imo he's not the drummer he was, who knows why? I think it's as much to do with the material of latter years not being as good/inspirational, and so as you say, it is as much the fault of the rest of the band as is his.

I think its as simple as this: He doesn't have to put the effort in now because of the fame. Why should he care is 1% of his fan base thinks he's a crap drummer now and doesn't put any effort in?

I wouldn't say they were harsh criticisms to be honest. They wrote some good stuff before and including 1991, but after that they stopped being a metal band and became almost a pop sensation. That's when the guys in that band stopped having to put the effort in and could simply ride on the fact that no matter what they did, it would be loved by everyone.

Don't get me wrong - I love Metallica, but there are many many better metal bands out there that deserve the attention. Same goes with drummers, Lars doesn't deserve the attention anymore IMO, but there are plenty of new drummers that do. People who say that Lars is one of best drummers out there are simply crazy.

And now for some more terribly under-rated sabbath. Cozy Powell, Tony Iommi, Tony Martin & Neil Murray:

I decided to have a good listen to Death Magnetic and Beyond Magnetic because of the Lars hate about his drumming.
I honestly couldn't hear in any of the songs where he could do anything more to improve them, he does what is right.
What do you expect him to do, put 200bpm double bass drums in on every song and a million rolls per second drum fills?
His drumming is perfect for what they are doing so don't blame him but the songs they are doing.
It would be nice to see what he could do with a band like Slayer.

Got some more live stuff...

Arch Enemy - Tyrants of the Rising Sun
Voivod - Warriors of Ice
Dark Tranquillity - Where Death is Most Alive

The arch enemy is awesome, the japanese fans are so nuts lol.
