The most 'skill' based games?

I used to know a couple of professional Quake players (Q3/4) that would be considered very high skilled CS players just because of how ridiculous their aim was. Granted, they only ever played mixes, but they dominated them a lot of the time. Id like to see a professional CS player dominate a Quake pickup.

I don't know many high level quake players who can sucessfully transition to CS - the type of aiming required is very different - rail aside quake is about accurate tracking against a fairly generous hitbox, anticipating and adjusting for movement as you go - whereas CS tends to be about fast precise targetting of a specific area of the hitbox for a very short length of time. You have to train exclusively really for one or the other to be good at the type of aim it requires.

Which is why fatal1ty didn't do so well, rather than the lack of ability - quake/unreal type shooters were where he was making the money and he couldn't retrain for top level CS without sacrificing that.

Well, shrug.. The guy who Im mainly refering to was known as a top railgun user in Quake, seemed to have no issues converting his aim to CS. As far as I remember, its been a few years now, he didnt just use the AWP either, which I can imagine would probably be the most similiar.

Someone who is good with rail in quake is prolly more likely to go with the aug or commando IMO than sniper weapons.

RTS, without a doubt. Warcraft III, AoE, e.t.c.

Lots of multitasking and concentration required.

I was poor at it, so much so that my MSN buddies refused to have me on their team for PvP. :o

quake 3 dm doesn't take much skill... nade spam the spawns, rocket/pg spam the halls, camp the power ups, stay on the edges of areas where fights build up.

FPS games...

CS/Quake are undoubtably the most skilful fps games out there.

CoD4/MoHAA id like to say but neither of them enivitably compare to the skill in what i said above in my opinion.

btw i play cod4, so not a cs fan boi :p

I enjoy playing CoD4 most of the time, but i usually play with the pump shotgun and it can get very frustrating due to the large amount of people using guns which shoot a million rounds a minute (p90s etc), not to mention the fact it normaly takes 2 shotgun hits to kill people anyway, unless you are really close to them to begin with. Ah well, if that's how they have fun i'll just have to try harder :p.

Cant really comment on the FPS as the only one i've played extensivly is CoD2

RTS: Starcraft without a doubt... friend plays it against some eastern guys and i cant really understand what the hell is going on half the time.

MMO: UO nox mage duels (or any other mage variation) still takes the cake imo. so long as they both have 2/4 casting then its fair game.. skill can easiliy overpower gear unlike most other mmos these days

COD4 is great fun - but for real skill it needs a lot of tweaking - so that you can play hardcore mode - so that theres a fair degree of acc. on the first 1-3 rounds or so but a lot of spread/recoil after that - to keep people from spamming to get kills with the high damage.

Last time I played servers either seemed to be low damage so you had to spam forever to get kills and it came down to a mixture of luck or who had the best internet connection, or high damage/hardcore but too much accuracy on the guns so someone could just spam the area enemy were likely to be and get a load of kills.

"Hardcore mode" is funny in CoD4, as it's "noob mode" really.

LMG/SMG/Auto rifle + ammo, rapid fire, deep impact etc. can be sprayed everywhere very effectively.

That's the mental thing with games of today. Whilst I would say skill is more the player than the game - things like CoD4 just go out their way to give low skill players an insane arsenal of tricks to get free kills left and right :(
