The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

Try it and see.
It will prolly mean something along the lines of the memory is not in 128 bit like it it was for the Nforce2 with 3 X 256s.
I suppose you are aware of the DDR 333 with all dimms populated with double sided memory?

hmm the ddr333 thing sucks...i will try with:
geil golden dragon 512mb
geil golden dragon 512mb
twinmos (single sided) 256mb
twinmos (single sided) 256mb

maybe that will let it run in ddr400, if not i will just sell the extra 512mb stick...

geil golden dragon 512mb
geil golden dragon 512mb
geil golden dragon 256mb

thnx :)

No they wouldn't work you would be better sending 2 of the 512's straight to me so I could put them in my wifes machine :) :)

But seriously I don't know, it wouldn't do any harm if you tried just might not work;)

hey Guys

Seems that im a bit late but wanted to wait till i went on hols. Just got back from malaysia with my new kit the said motherboard a week 50 3200 winnie and 1gb of corsair xl 3200 pro twinX memory. Set it all up but it was very unstable kept freezing restarting etc. So i switched memory slots and it seems fine, i'm currently running at 2.5ghz with the ram at 250 htt at 4 and timings at 2-3-3-6. This ram is amazing for pc3200 rated stuff its running on a 1:1 divider. I darent push the mem up anymore and i dont really want to change the divider. In the multi options it only goes up to 10 does this mean i need to get an updated bios (currently using shipping bios). Also what slots do i use for Dual channel?

Many Thanks

Luke

Just realised what you might be saying the multi that only goes to 10 I think is the multiplier for the cpu if it is that your talking about then it is only possible to go down AMD lock them so that they can only go down not up :)

God how depressing. I've been looking at this board for weeks and was all set to order it even tho I knew there were a few issues. However after reading through the last 8 pages I think i'll stay well clear! I don't want to diss the owners who have managed to get theirs working but there seems to be an abnormal amount of problems.

Has most of this been down to early BIOS's or in retrospect would you recommend a diff NF3 board? I want to OC & hit high FSB's and being able to use TCCD RAM would be great too.

The Neo 2 does seem a bit fussy, but providing you read up on all it's idiosyncrasies you should be OK.
I suggest you bookmark here.
I have to agree the last few pages look bad, but a lot of this has been repeated.
For instance; I posted very early on in the thread how to get the mem in dual channel, but it still gets asked.

I think its a great mobo. Very well made in great package.

Admittantly there are problems, but only for a few users.

I also think this should be made a sticky for all the help it gives.

h'mm okay you are turning me around a bit :)
I did have a look at some of the other NF3 boards and apart from the Asus A8V I don't think there is much competition, Asus & Abit maybe.

I'm still a bit weary as time is short these days but hopefully I won't have too much trouble. Ooh, back in stock too :)

To be honest i think with any motherboard there are always going to be a select few that have problems but i really think its all down to the confidence factor. Everytime you read something bad about a product, ** proberbly not going to buy it. I only read good things about this motherboard and only good things have come from it. I took the plunge and bought and now i'm happy. With all computer products theres always going to be an element of risk. I bought the Neo 2 because i didnt think there was anything as good on the market for overclocking.

No I had no problems at all, go to this link http://xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=43033

Have a read and honestly I cannot over recommend this board, it is by a million miles better than the Asus A8V I have done 6 of these now with not a single problem, on the other hand 3 Asus 2 broken boards. Please read up on the above thread I can honestly say you won't be disapointed if you get one of these. If you live local I would help you set it up :)

That is something that really needs a bit more information, we have already on another begun to find lots of people with the Dreaded Tagen's who like me have no problem at all, aparently the Asus have a similar problem but again there are many happy people with no problems, I'm sure if there were a real identifiable problem MSI and Asus would have done something and the PSU manufacturers would stop giving warranty if used on these motherboards, I really would like more proof before nailing these boards, there are 1000's of people who are running them and their PSU's are working fine, have a good read then by all means if you don't like it you won't buy it.

I just think it is a shame that this cracking board is tainted by this.

Just ordered :)
funny how a small upgrade turns into one double the cost with me, heh. I've saved some of the tips from this thread and will follow those.
Cheers for the offer kimandsally, I should be OK but if not then I'll give you a shout. I'm down in Plymouth btw

Installed a neo2 platinum yesterday. Some things of note:
updated bios to 1.4
setting failsafe defaults in the bios switches off the floppy drive (that caused enormous amounts of grief to troubleshoot).
I was installing a bootable raid 0 partition made of two maxtors. Making the raid went fine. First bits of installing xp went fine. When XP reached the first "Starting Windows" stage both maxtors started making horrendous clicking noises and the system froze. The cure was to make raid driver floppy from the cd (instructions in manual) rather than using the packaged one. (note about making the floppy - don't copy the windows uninstaller file in the folder and the files will fit on the disk). You could also make a disk using the downloaded nforce driver - not tried this.
Other than that it went ok.

Just got my board and was wondering one thing:

The backplate underneath the cpu socket - do I have to remove it etc or is that just for fancy coolers? (Will be using the stock cooler that came with my 3200+ initially)
