The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

If you are going to use say a zalman 7000, you will have to remove the stock back plate, as the lugs on the MSI one stick up too high for the zalman.
The zalman would still fit, but the pressure is not correct holding it down due to the height of the lugs.
It's really going to depend on what cooler you use I suppose.

A word of warning; some have an awfull job removing said back plate, and if you are going to use it with the stock cooler, I reckon you might have a job removing it at a later date.
Some have very sticky glue on, and need heating with a hairdryer to release the glue.
I might be inclined to remove it now, and get rid of some of the glue, as I will prolly stick a bit once in use due to the heat.

Those 2 lugs that stick through the mobo (ones that are too high for zalman) actually helped me removing it.
Even thumb / finger pressure on each and it fell off.

Ok, got my board yesterday and spent a lovely time getting it to work.

Firstly, tried to boot up using an exisiting XP installation. Got to the "verifying DMI pool" bit and within a couple of seconds after that, just kept rebooting without warning.

Installed a fresh copy of XP + Sp2 (which took at least 2-3 times longer than using my old Athlon 2200+ with XP)

Used 1 stick of OCZ in the memory slot nearest the cpu.
No problems, machine sees the 512MB stick etc.
Did remember to put both power connectors into the motherboard too!

Started to install things, then got to Zone Alarm - that installed without problem until "please enter serial number" bit. Entered that and instant reboot. Machine boots up and Zone alarm window appears and instant reboot and so on.
Had to go into safe mode and do a system restore and reinstall most stuff - not sure if it was to do with no internet connection etc though. Going to create a restore point and try again (have disabled XPs firewall)

Just put the second stick of ram into the second slot from the cpu and I've still got a 512MB system. Doesn't seem to spot it at all.
Any reasons why? Not seated properly, wrong colour slot?
At least I've got a 2.01GHz cpu now according to XP:)

Just the memory thing to sort out and to get my SATA drives online and then I can start playing around with bits.

Added:
Second stick of memory wasn't seated properly - fine now.
Zone alarm definitely won't work with SP2 - instant reboots everytime I install it or try to boot up with it installed.
SATA works fine.

Now to figure out which motherboard I'm using from the list in Motherboard Monitor 5.xx.

Tried running 3dMark 05 and it crashed on the second bit (forest) due to lack of memory....1gig isn't enough apparently.

Finally. Do I need to install those NF3 drives on the cd and can I connect the cpu fan to a fan controller or do I have to have it connected to the motherboard?

installed mine last night with a 3500 winchester and stock cooling with geil ultra 4200, x800xt-pe @ 549/590.

Bios version 1.4

After a couple of hiccups, primed overnight at 260x10x4 in 1:1 with the memory at 3,4,4,8, 2.8v.

BUT, Could someone explain to me how the cpu voltage works in relation to 'over vid'. My cpu voltage pullk down only goes to 1.55.

Sorry if this is a bit noob but this is a new platform to me.

Also (maybe a bit off topic) xp-90 or arctic cooler? Don't like the ram clearance on the xp-120. This is for overclocking temps, noise not a real issue.

I have had my setup for just over a week all settings at auto just to make sure everthing was ok. Last night i decided i would get the ram at the settings it was build for 250Mhz.

Just want the system at stock for now.

So set the HTT to 4X, CPU to 9X, FSB @ 250 and set the ram to 2.8V 2.5,4,4,8 = 250 mhz PC4000

Now after running on test with certain apps 3dmark and running HL2 for 1hour 30mins + CS etc and having no probs last night went to switch PC on this morning and displays bios splash screen as normal but does not go any further. So i then powered off and on again and no problems atall.

(Have now run mem test for 35 mins with 0 errors

A suggestion was made over at xtreme systems to turn off usb mouse keyboard support has been a problem with cold boot so have tried this and done a shutdown and booted and seems ok now will monitor closely )

I just wondered there was a fix better than this to resolve it. Bios is 1.4 came with the board and spec is in sig. Any help much appricated.

Hi guys, I'm really sorry if this is a repeat question, but I just can't find a solution for my problem; bought a neo 2 fro ocuk the other day; my spec is:

winchester 3500,
neo2,
2x512 geil ultra 4000 (2.5, 7, 4, 4),
PNY 6800GT,
36gb raptor,
2 other ide drives,
Q-Tec 550w psu,
M-Audio rev 7.1,

First of all I installed everything, stable for a while, then I had a BSOD. Flashed the bios; it corrupted my raptor (boot). Reformatted etc, now I just get tons of crashes; BSOD, resets, quits out from games to windows (sometimes with Memory could not be read at errors). rev 7.1, ide drives etc all unplugged, tried as many bios tips as poss to try and get it stable; running out of ideas. This is all at stock speeds btw.

Thanks for your help.

Just installed my Neo2 along with my 3200+ Winchester. Running on 1.4 official bios (is there one any better?).

Currently burning in at: 250x10 1:1 1T @ 1.45v core. Temps are around 30degrees idle - 40degrees load - using a Zalman CNPS7000cu HSF (almost silent) :D

Gonna try 2.6Ghz later......

Had to uninstall the NForce drivers then re-install following the swap from my DFI Lanparty UT 250 (s754). Seems ok now tho.

I have enabled Cool'n'Quiet - as I had is enabled on the DFI - any problems in doing this? Also I have enabled the PSU Fan monitoring thingy in the BIOS and set it to 50degress. Purely to see what it did. Seems stable so far.

Cheers for the offer kimandsally, I should be OK but if not then I'll give you a shout. I'm down in Plymouth btw

You can say that again.:p

Are any of you lads using the Enermax Noisetaker 600W EG701AX-VE(W) SFMA ATX2.0 PSU with Neo motherboards, just thinking of getting one extra amps may help O/C or maybe not.

What's the software people keep using in those pictures they post that show all the settings for memory, cpu etc under windows?

What are the NForce 3 drivers for on the cd that comes with the motherboard? Should I install them?

What a load of ****, this is a pretty poor effort by MSI :(

Just wiped it off and put a nice new layer of AS5 on

What did you guys put under there as a replacement for the thermal paste?

Is AS5 ok?

Or does it need to be non-conductive?

If you use AS5 once you put the HS back on take it off again to check to see if it makes good contact with the chip. I found that using a thin layer of AS5 meant that the majority of the HS still didn't come into contact with the chip.

In the end I used Ceramique to make sure that there was good contact.
