The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

In the end I used Ceramique to make sure that there was good contact.

I applied a splodge of AS5 to the heatsink and another splodge to the chip, seated them together and took them apart to check.

I can safely say there was a nice layer of AS5 spread out :p

It's actually taken the sys temp down from 29 to 27 :D

I took the NB heatsink off and put on a Zalman. Spent ages getting everything right, cables etc, new heatsink with dozens of pieces.... then realised my Glacier 6800 was right in the line of the heatsink

another hour or so taking it back out and reinstalling the stock sink...

Eeeek !
Thats shocking ... but as mine is in situ and working fine @ 250 HT I aint gonna take it all to bits now, I do have a couple of builds using the Neo2 coming up so they will deffo get that ineffective blob removed and AS3 put in its place :)

Aye, I did contemplate chopping a load of fins off it but i was running out of time and i dont honestly think there would have been a lot left :)

I put on some paste and lapped it a bit as it wasn't making very good contact. What is it STILL, with these damned curved nvidia chips

nice board so far tho!

Got the board installed and had a good testing session with it yesterday. Avoided all the usual issues such as only using ram slots 1&2, SATA 3&4 etc. Flashed the BIOS straightaway to the 1.41 trats modded and have had no problems whatsoever. Just to think I was going to avoid this board too too.

I had:
XP2500M @ 2380MHz, 208FSB
1GB Geil PC3500

Now I have:
3200 Winchester
1GB Adata Viteste PC4800
Maxtor DM10 300GB

The week 46 CPU was able to hit 2800MHz at 1.60 actual volts (according to CPU-Z and BIOS) but I'll probably run it around 2700 as that only requires 1.55v.

The max bus speed I could stably reach was 295 and I think that may be down to only running the RAM at 2.85v.

One big issue tho. When the XP boot screen starts to appear, it pauses for exactly 30 seconds before it brightens and Windows boots. Initially I thought it was like it was trying to get a dhcp address but I've set it manually and turned off the two nics, to no avail. Anyone have any ideas? Booting is a bit of a chore when it takes that long but i havent tried it wth hibernating yet (which i normally use).

Great result so far! Quake 3 fps was 230 and is now 400. Super Pi 1M was 44s and is now 31s. More to test tonight...

Hmm, ok, i found the issue. It was partially my own fault really. I got an xp-120 for the cpu; the capacitor placement wasn't an issue i found, but trying to get the damn thing hooked on with the bloody memory so close was a real task. Hence I was running the memory in the top two channels... As soon as I found out that I could just about fit them in the bottom 2 I tried it and hey presto. One crash since then, but it was my 6800GT; strange, I can't clock it nearly as high as I could on my NF7. Seems stable now ive lowered the core speed (bit annoying though).

Only tried a minor oc so far, and it seems stable, gonna give it a bigger effort soon. Thinking about replacing the qtec psu though. Any suggestions? I bought it a while back as a cheap temporary think when I blew a decent one by powering my system up with a cracked cold cathode tube. Seemed ok for my last system, so never bothered replacing it. Anyone know what the ultra x-connect is like? Heard a bit of a mixed bag about it, but like the modular idea.

Thinking about doing the NB thing now after seeing those pics...

Satyr:
Check fastwrites is disabled in bios, that might hinder the GT o/c .. it certainly gave stability issues with my XT, fine once disabled.
As for PSU .. many will recommend the X-Pro .. personally I would go for a better known brand ... Enermax are a good choice, and the Akasa 460W on this week only looks to be a good buy right now, I have the Akasa coming for the wifes pc ;)

1.2 on mine from OCuk,

by the way my Zalman 7000 went on fine without removing the back plate.... I was trying to find some custom screws to scre it in place with out the lugs but coulds so I just used the ones that helf the plastic bit in place and it sits just fine... rock solid... and there must be good contact because its running at 35C with AS5

Yeah, I've already disabled that unfortunately. One thing I need to ask really, when I built my machine, low and behold a friend of mine had harvested pretty much all of my AS. Had to mount the xp120 with the syringe of white goop they gave me. Any idea if that's ok stuff, or should i get my hands on some AS5 and remount the bloody thing? Never lending that out again...

Does anyone else get frequent freezing in games? I have
neo 2
3500 newcastle
1gb (2x512 corsair)- not oc'd
gforce 6800 ulra
raided maxtors as C
using on board sound

Basically games will freeze for 10 seconds or so frequently and then continue. Makes Counterstrike:source a no-no. Other games freeze too. Windows and Apps are stable. I beleve the error has been seen elsewhere with the nforce3 chipset but I am just starting to troubleshoot. I'll try disabling sound and see where that gets me, I've had bad EAX experiences enough to start blaming it immediately.

What drivers are you using?

I was using the realtek ac97 driver for sound. I've switched to the latest nvidia driver but it still freezes, only now the sound stutters too.
I'm using the latest certified nvidia driver for graphics. The motherboard drivers are the ones from msi.

I actually had that problem. To be honest though, I'm not actually sure I can help. Because that wasn't my main problem, I'm not sure I noticed how I fixed it. Probably bios tweaks though. Have u disabled onboard sound/lan/fastwrites etc? My problems pretty much ended when I moved the ram into the slots closest to the cpu.
