The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

Hello everyone. I have the neo2 rev.1 for a few months already and I have to say its a real shame that they dont bother in MSI to release a BIOS which will fix all the annoying bugs of the board. Its a decent board, though i was really tempted after losing my nerves several times to switch to gigabyte or even asus...

I still have weird problems. I ve read the whole thread here, as well as all the other neo2 threads in the other big/famous forums. I didnt see anyone experiencing the same problems as mine. Oof...Although I'm desperate, I'll give it a shot.

First of all, sometimes after a cold boot or when i restart, it hangs in:

Nvidia RAID IDE ROM BIOS 4.60
Copyright (c) 2004 NVIDIA Corp
Detecting array ...
-

(i dont use raid)

then the only way to proceed is reset the comp, and 2 out of 3 tries it works, otherwise it might require another reset.

Then the problem i havent seen anyone else reporting is that BIOS doesnt work properly. The board came with the official 1.4 bios. I had problems from the very first time. I flashed the 1.41b, still same. I flashed the 1,36 (which i m using atm), and it seems to happen less. However I'm not sure its the bios's fault.
WHats happening is, sometimes it can freeze right up after i enter in the menu, or after a while...And i m not talking about pressing enter to change the HTT, it can happen anywhere. So after a lot of resets, If i m lucky and super-fast, i have to change one value at a time, press f10, reboot, then do this again, coz it freezes and i cant change properly any value. Sometimes it can last longer, sometimes immediately.

Thing is, once the pc has booted in windows its rock solid....i can play for hours and hours, i can bench in 3dmark2001/2003 or superpi or even prime, no errors no nothing to be honest. Only when i overclocked i had some...But now i m in stock settings

The freezing in the bios, not letting me enjoy it, is my main complain atm and i m one step away from purchasing a new mobo...I just cant figure out the problem. Also, if it was something hardware related, wouldnt I be experiencing problems even in windows environment? It never freezes, random reboots, or ANYTHING...only in booting and in Bios

I d like to mention my samsung dvd-rom stopped working with this board, though i saw someone suggesting its the nvidia SW IDE drivers which cause this in some ppl, but i havent tried to put the drive back and confirm it.

This must be one of the worst mobos i ever worked with, I know its good and in some way impressive, but its waaaay too buggy....Takes out the ****

My rig is:

Enermax EG465P 431W (20A amps in +12V rail)
MSI k8n neo2 platinum rev.1 - 1.36 beta bios
Corsair XMS Twinx pc3200XL @ 2-2-2-5-1T - 2.7V
AMD64 3500+ Newcastle
1 x 120gb Seagate Barracuda 7.200V
1 x 80gb Seagate Barracuda
Hercules 9700pro @ stock speed
Audigy 2 ZS
- WinXP sp2
- latest chipset drivers
- latest omega drivers
- latest creative drivers (lol)

I ve tried quite a lot of things, I m running out of ideas, If u have any...please...i would appreciate it. I got no clue why it locks-up in the bios...

Thanks for your time and if u need any more info, just ask

hi there,

when i first got my neo2 board the same thing was happening to me, always locking in bios, couldnt even get windows installed. i tried everything, like u. i found that if i selected "optimized settings" in main bios screen (just below fail safe settings) then it was fine and has been fine since, even after ive changed loads of bios settings. worth a try if u havent already

good luck

hi mate, thanks for the info! i ll give it a shot cheers

Beep codes??

Anyone know the beep codes for this motherboard? They don't seem to be listed in the manual?

I just bought this MSI K8N with an A64 3000 and 1GB Geil Value RAM. Problem is after building the system into my case, it is acting seriously weird.

Just plugging in the mains lead causes the fans to spin!! The CPU, case and north bridge fans immediately start spinning. Drives don't power up, just the fans run. This is when I get the set of "chirping" beeps.

"Beep-Beep Pause Beep-Beep Pause Beep-Beep"

The PSU is a good quality Tagan one, so shouldn't be short of power. And it has been working fine with my old system. I am working into some troubleshooting now, but it is too late for me to think properlly now. :)

Any suggestions guys? IMHO this board sounds like it's DOA. The only other time I have seen this kind of problem is on a dead motherboard. Have I been unlucky and been hit by one of the duff OCUK boards? Anyone else here who had a board DOA? What did it do?

Edit: Beeps still stay the same even when all RAM and AGP/PCI cards are removed. How can I tell if it is the motherboard or the CPU?

Anyone tried the latest 1.5 official bios yet?

Just noticed it on the website, but not seen anyone mention it on here.

Still listed as 1.40 on the Live Update for the latest release and that's what I use now to get stuff. Will try 1.5 out today and let you know. :)

I did a Live update last night and it said latest BIOS 1.5 ! :D

I'm not going to risk it so I'm gonna flash a spare Chip so if it fails I can just put the old one back in.........yes, I'm a coward LOL ;) :p

Thanks for that list Koeman. That tells me the problem is 2 - 2 - 2 64K memory failure Bad memory, even though the same pattern continues with memory unplugged.

I am going for your theory of reseating the CPU today, but this doesn't explain to me why the system is immediately powering up the fans. And then refuses to respond to the main case On/Off switch.

Update @ 12:00hrs: Oops!! That set of "chirping beeps" was actually coming from my CoolDrive. (My excuse was it was late at night...). So now I have unplugged that, the mystery gets more confusing. NO noise at all from the motherboard. Just the fans starting immediately the mains is connected.

Update @ 18:00hrs: Darn!! It looks like it wasn't the motherboard after all. The PSU has packed up without warning. For some reason it has died when I swapped the motherboards over.

Update @ 20:00hrs: It is kinda comical that the speed of this new system, combined with my SCSI drives, means I can now install the whole OS and sepearate service pack in around 30mins!! After so much greif it's great to now be able to play with thie new board. (Only slightly annoying it cost me an extra £55 for another PSU...) :D

I updated to 1.5 yesterday. Seems the same to me. It has an updated SATA BIOS thing but I don't use SATA so I can't comment :)

finally got a replacement mobo last week and installed, everything is fine and somethings are showing up that never did before... must be because I recieved very old stock around christmas I think.

Anyway just a little question has anyone here used nTune from the nvidia website? I`m using bios 1.4 and I tried it and using the nvmonitor my temps are showing about 10C less than they were before I ran the tuning software. temps now are 33C at idle and 43C on air at full load whilst running Prime95 torture test for several hours. Is it possible Ntune fixed the weird temp readings from the mobo that usually occurs?

My rig is running rock solid... I love this mobo :D

I realised I had changed the security settings in my IE so resetting to default showed up the new BIOS. Temperature readings according to SpeedFan seem to have been sorted out so I'm not sure what they've changed there.

I'll try using the nTune software to see if anything changes for me. :)

This board is great.... now I sorted out the dodgy PSU troubles, everything else has been incredibly smooth. And VERY fast.

Which motherboard monitoring software are people using? I notice that there are both MSI and nVidia ones included. In fact, it looks like more than one MSI proggy there. What are all these? And which are the best to use?

Bios 1.5 Flash thru Windows

Just in case it needed stating again...

MSI Live told me there was a new bios upgrade available, and having successfully used the online/windows update for a previous bios upgrade, I let it do it's thing to flash the bios.....

However, this time, long story short, even though it said it had all completed successfully, after the reboot the mobo was dead in the water!!!

Clearing the CMOS didn't help... CMOS checksum error!

One quick visit to www.biosflash.co.uk and I'm expecting a delievery of a new replacement bios chip, flashed to 1.5.

Moral of the story..... NEVER FLASH THE BIOS FROM WITHIN WINDOWS, IT'S JUST NOT WORTH IT!

Lesson learned.

I've just hot flashed a bios for the same mobo the same bios, something is wrong it looks like, although I did it on mine and it's OK but there are no improvements.
It is looking rather bad for this BIOS.

Anyone know if bios 1.5 sorts out the temperature reading problem? I know afraser2k has noticed a difference, anyone else?

It seems to corrupt the bios I've doen 1 good flash although noticed nothing different, then another guy corrupted his which I hotflashed yesterday, then the guy above also got problems, I'd leave it if I were you.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" :D

A darn fine rule for all computer equipment.... If ya BIOS is working well for ya, don't just dive in and upgrade it unless you know it is fixing something specific for you. A dodgy tempature reading is easy enough to live with. :)

I'll give it a try anyway at the weekend, I've got myself a bios saviour now from a recent bad experience. If it goes wrong I just flick a switch and have my backup bios :) Will post back my results in a few days. Hate having to plug the floppy drive in on this motherboard!
