The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

I still havent figured out why when i press delete to enter the bios, either immediately when i see the first screen or just moving around to the options, my pc freezes and all i can do is a hardware reset...

Also even though i dont use RAID, sometimes my pc hangs in NVIDIA RAID detecting array msg, and requires a hardware reset again.

those are the only things ******* me off on this board and i got no clue what causes them.

Delete the swearing you'll get a warning if the dons see it ;)

Whoops

KoemanGR - and the dodgy BIOS Delete key...

Have you tried a different keyboard?

Does it still cause problems getting into the BIOS if you unplug the hard drives? (daft sounding suggestion, but you mentioned RAID issues)

What about trying to reset the BIOS with the CMOS jumper on the motherboard? Maybe that will then let you in? (Bit of a mad guess again that one... but logical)

I assume you must have been able to get into that BIOS at one stage as I notice your signature mentiones a Beta BIOS. (It is also possible that it is the BETA status of the BIOS causing troubles....)

'tis a weird one....

oops ok, i didnt know that its considered as swearing:p

1) why would it be the keyboard ??

2) i dont use raid thats the problem, from bios its disabled but when i boot sometimes it hangs in NVIDIA RAID blabla detecting array, and i dont know why coz i DONT use raid.

3) I tried to put the fail-safe defaults or the optimized defaults, still same. However sometimes it seems to be working ok, sometimes it freezes. weird stuff

Update: Ok, just thought I'd try it..... but changing the pin on JBAT1 from 1-2, to 2-3 for 30+ seconds (!!!) with the power completely off seems to have fixed my dead bios...
I tried it again last night and it allowed me in to the bios screen, load optimised defaults, change a couple of things and hey presto, back into Windows!
Worth a try if anyone else experiences problems flashing to 1.5........
I dare say I'll need my new flashed bios chip sometime down the line, given the volatility of these bios flashes....

KoemanGR - Most of my replies were kinda "Educated guesses". The reason I pointed at the keyboard as it may either be old and battered, or a USB keyboard. A good old PS2 keyboard is always worth trying.

Weird about you getting messages about RAID. I'm gonna reboot and check this new kit of mine. As I have SCSI I have turned off all RAID, IDE, SATA, and don't remember seeing the RAID messages. Maybe it is worth you going into the actual RAID menus to see if there is an odd setting in there?

The fact that the issue is intermittant is the weirdest part.

Doogz - a valuable lesson there. BIOS updates often to require a "full reset" as you have done. :)

KoemanGR - When I boot my system up, and hit <Delete>, there is a large delay before it actually goes into the BIOS. I sit there tapping at the key with nothing happeneing. Once it has enumerated all my SCSI drives, then the BIOS lets me in.

Once in there, are you sure you have fully disabled RAID? It is under "Integrated Peripherals" / "Onboard Device" / "Raid Config"

I just looked into my BIOS and checked the version. The current MSI boards being supplied by OCUK already have the version 1.5 BIOS installed. Now that is what I call up to date!!

Im just installing the Neo2 board as we speak, reading the manual first (1st time ever!) do I have to do anything with the CPU shield on the rear of the motherboard, mine is already fitted, looking in the manual it seems to suggest that you have to fit it yourself, and remove a plaster??...

You lost me.
Care to elaborate a bit?

The motherboard comes with the cpu holder attached just put the cpu in the socket then if your using the std heatsink put it on and pull the lever job done, I'm not sure what the book is saying post the page that your looking at and I'll look at mine and come back to you.

Sorted thanks, its already attatched.. The book is wrong!!.

And ...

It actually booted up first time, no memory problems (touch wood).
Just got to figure out now what everything means in the bios.
Would you leave it how it is to start with and change some of the settings straight away?. Im running with a 3200 and 1gb Geil Value ram.

I have the MSI Neo 2 platinum motherboard and am about to install this into the Antec Sonata case. The Sonata case has the standard intel 10 pin audio connector which I assume plugs straight into JAUD1 on the Neo 2. If I do this will I be able to use the front audio ports on the Sonata case for my Headphones and Mic (Logitech Extreme PC Gaming Headset (SP-015-LG)) as well as use the motherboard audio port connectors for my 5.1 Creative speakers?

The MSI manual states “MSI Reminds You...If you don’t want to connect to the front audio header, pins 5 & 6, 9 & 10 have to be jumpered in order to have signal output directed to the rear audio ports. Otherwise, the Line-Out connector on the back panel will not function.”

Does this mean I can only have one or the other but not both? Sorry if this is a noobish question its my first build in a while.

It's one or the other I'm afraid.
When you remove the jumpers so you can use it for front ports, that disables the rear outs on the board.

I believe it is standard with the AC97 Audio Chipset. So ya need to put up with it. A choice of one or the other.

The best you're gonna be able to do is use the headphone socket on your speakers to act as the kill switch when you're using your headphones. Or are you trying to have both active at the same time? If yes, then just get a splitter cable.

Yes wanted to have both active :( as the headphones need line in for mic and line out for sound, and the speakers require front/rear/centre so wanted to use motherboard audio connecters for their connections.

Wanted both active to save switching jacks between headphones+mic for gaming OR speakers for music, films etc. Headphone socket (kill switch) on speakers is line out so mic will then not work. In this case then I assume front audio ports on case might as well be disabled then using the jumper configuration in manual? Is there any work around or is this a limitation of the alc850 codec on this motherboard? Thx
