The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

Thanks for the advice. It seems OK now, reflashed (still using live update as couldn't be bothered to faff around with floppies.) Powered down and shorted JBAT1 for about a minute.

I also avoided using the 'Load optimized defaults option' in the BIOS, I'm not sure if this may have been what was causing the problem.

Whatever, now time to push up that FSB!

Just updated the bios from the latest official to the 1.c modded version.. seems my chip is now actually stable @ 2.75

12hrs OCCT and it's ok :D (failed after about 3hrs before). Running mem @ 183 divider... ~6500mb/s on Sandra mem benchmark.

Pic: click

Just knocked the HTT upto 255 now to test at 2.8... just under 5hrs and going OK.

Yeah the Opteron is good... maybe get the 146 chip? Although it seems they are out of stock at OcUK at least :(

Just cleared 10hrs on OCCT @ 2.8... going to try 2.9 over night

Another question plz guys ,in the manual it says if you have all 4 dimms filled its best to run at DDR333 ,so when i overclock my opty 146 i set RAM mhz to 133 then up the HT to 280 @ 3x which is obviously 2.8ghz ,this also ups my RAM mhz to 186ish which is DDR372 ,after many recent troubles im starting to believe that having 4x512 sticks of geil value @ DDR 372 in this board is the cause of many hardlocks and crashing in games and windows ive had in the last week, would setting the RAM to 100mhz then start clocking fix this ? does anyone else use 4 sticks of geil value in this board ? any advice you can offer plz ? :)

Has anybody had an issue with slow SATA HD performance when an IDE drive is also installed?

Here is the background story.

I brought a Samsung 200Gig SATA to replace my old 80gig boot drive, cloned the old PATA disk to the new SATA one
fine, but it seemed to take a long while, once done i removed all my other drives and booted with the new SATA to check it out.

After a day or so of the new SATA working well, i decided to re-attach my PATA storage drive and DVD burner. When i booted with all the drives attached windows took 3 or 4 times longer than usuall to load and the system became very unstable (BSOD's/sudden restarts).

If i boot the SATA with any PATA device attached in either channel 0 or 1 be it master or slave the system just slows down and becomes unstable.

I've tried removing the NVidia IDE SW driver and loads of other things to get around this, but to no aqvail.

Is this a known problem or fix for it?, i've spent hours searching google/ect and it's driving me nuts.

Not used SATA but had a problem with a third hard disk. PATA DVD-ROM, 80GB, 80GB (Maxtors) all working fine. Decided to add an old 20GB Maxtor I had lying around, and drives D and E would swap EVERY reboot and then Windows would prompt me that they'd swapped...and ASKED FOR A REBOOT! Madness. And not worth it for 20GB of storage.

You may have checked this but:
What SATA headers are you using? One pair are NOT locked. Set your AGP frequency to 67. Use SATAs nearest to the CPU, as the more conveniently placed ones won't lock as you overclock higher.

I am using the 2 Locked SATA Ports and all 4 IDE Ports, plus an IT8212 IDE Card that are fully filled up, and I am pleased to say that my HDs are disgustingly quick.

C: = SATA2 WDRaptor 36GB ( Nowhere near as quick as some seem to think they are )
D: = SATA3 Seagate 120GB ( Pi55es on the WD Raptor for speed )

E: = IDE4 = Seagate 160GB
F: = IDE5 = Seagate 80GB
T: = IDE6 = Maxtor 40GB
O: = IDE7 = ZIP250
R: = IDE0 = Pioneer 109
V: = IDE1 = Pioneer 110
W: = IDE2 = NEC 3540A
Z: = IDE3 = Sony CDRW

So, well filled up, and the Data transfers are hellishly quick... Not as quick as the SCSI setup but still, 4GB copies from one HD to another in much less than a minute, so quicker than I could need.

With the nVIDIA SW IDE Driver, I have only had one problem... When looking for an ASPI layer when trying to compile a custom Boot CD for 2K/XP, it hangs, so I have just turned searchign for an ASPI layer off, as I use Nero for burning everythign anyway, other than that, its fine. The last time I compared the speed of MS vs NV for the IDE there was very little if any difference for me, but that was on the oold Abit NF7S or maybe the MSI Delta? - Not bothered to compare the MSI Neo2 or the DFI LP250GB to be honest?

KINETIC:
With using 4 sticks of RAM, there is also somethign on only using single sided RAM too, not just the speed, so what RAM are you using?

I got Corsair XMS4400 TwinX and Platinum, and thankfully the Neo2 does not care which pair I use, but the DFI LanParty hated the Platinum, it needed the TwinX and this was a bit of a poo cos I fancied throwing all 4 sticks into the MSI as I have a pair of 1GB Sticks of OCZ and this would have got my 2 main 64Bit boxes both up to 2GB but as it is, I have them both at 1GB and my Barton has 2GB and I never use that anymore!!!- Swine eh?

Its geil value, the recent crash problems have stopped since i removed two sticks but i want to use the other two sticks, maybe if i try them in different dimms it may solve the problem
That Geil is 2-sided RAM modules. And I think I remember a post on the previous page which quoted the MSI manual which says that single sided modules are needed when populating all four slots.... I may be wrong with my (human) memory, so it could be worth a read of the old MSI manual. RTFM. :D

Anyone tried the latest 1.9B bios from MSI's site? seems that you cant get into the bios after a few restarts. Cant overclock as well as i use to. Have to clear CMOS just to be able to get back into the bios :(
