The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

Can someone help me out fitting a artic freezer64 pro to this board, cant work out for the life of me how it fits, i need it so the fan is blowing from the front to the back of the case, how it comes pre-assembled it will only blow from side to side right onto my RAM.

I had no problems with mine. Fan is at the "front" of the case, blowing towards the "back". This means the RAM is actually above the fan.

What part is confusing you?

I left the stock MSI bracket in place, and just hooked the heatsink onto that.

Mine fits just nicely.

Blows front to back as said. Fits in a few seconds.

A linky-poos to mine = http://www.fatrakoon.co.uk/pc/mb-neo2.htm

Only issue I have had with my AF64 is that the fan is permanently on, and I cannot read the fan speed... Other than that, its peachy, which is a shame cos the FX55 Cooler I had been using before this, is now on the Clawhammer and that hardly comes on at all... Only when the CPU is pushed, and this can be a little freaky, btu it shows its cooling power when it runs a ClawHammer 3700 at under 30c with no fan I suppose!

RE: Scoobydoo's Artic Freezer64.

We talked over e-mail on this one, and it looks like he has a Freezer64 PRO. And the Pro's are constructed at 90 degrees to our normal Freezer64's. So he is going to see if he can take it back and swap it. :)

Edit: That don't make sense. My box also says Pro. Anyway, the main point is I sent him a dodgy photo of my heatsink in place and he could see that his clips were different to normal. Especially when I reffered him back to the OCUK page where there are all on display.

Yeah, the new Freezer64 PRO is at 90degrees to where it should be and wont fit onto the motherboard, the older Freezer64 as in the pictures on the website fits fine, just need to get my hands on one of these from somewhere as they have stopped making them now.

I think we may need to nag OCUK to update their photos and info on the site, but as there are no e-mail addresses anymore, I can see no way to try and nudge them to do this.

Otherwise, I hope other MSI users will see your posts before they buy a freezer. :)

Ok great, your the 2nd person whos confirmed that and it's a good thing because Santa Claua just ordered me some :D I'm only using 245 fsb so hopefully I can get a nice divider with this ram and speed up my system.

Also right now in BF2 if I turn the textures to high it gets pretty laggy, will the extra 1GB of ram fix that, or is it becase of my out dated 128mb 9800 pro?

I know it runs fine. I have most on medium, 2 high(geometry and effects) and dynamic lights on low(cuts back fps a lot even on medium) on 1024x768. I was just wondering when I have 2gb instead of 1gb could I put textures on high and or dynamic lights on medium too and not get the lag I do now.

Hey, I got an annoying one here...

I bought some Corsair 4400 RAM for my LanParty nF3 250GB to play with the Tampon and see about clocking it, but it does not seem to like the Mobo ( Even though the Site says thats good RAM, its hanging and giving me Blueys all over the place? ) anyway, I put the 2x1GB OCZ3200 back in and runnign its stock, its fine!

Right, the RAM I got is the Platinum stuff... Corsair 4400 as I said... Capable of at least 550MHZ right!

Well, in the MSI Neo-2 Platinum, I am using Corsair 4400 TwinX ( These are all dual channel RAM by the way - 512MB x 2 to be exact ) and the TwinX have Black heatsinks while the Platinum has silver, or grey to settle any arguements, btu basically they are the same thing or near enough!

Now, I have taken the 2x512MB TwinX all *** way to 300FSB and I have not yet pushed the Platinum too high, its at 250 right now, and in the MSI its just fine ( so far!!!! )

Now, I though about lobbing all 4 sticks into the MSI Neo-2 Platinum to give me 4x512MB, but can I?

Has anyone done this?

The site says no, it must be single sided if I want to use all 4 and I have asked some mates who all say that it will damage the Mobo and the RAM if I try it??

I am thinking that if it does not work, it will simply just bleep at me, but they say it will fry something???

This is a new one on me, but all the same, its also a few hundred quids qorth of risk-business too isnt it, so I thought I would ask the ones who really know... They are not in, so I thought I would ask you lot instead ( LOL )

Seriously though... Can I risk it or not?

No, I dont mean that... is it safe or not? - I dont want to risk anything?

These sticks of RAM are all capable of great speeds, and its a bit thick to just throw them away.

Please get back on this one as I would love to use them all in the MSI NEO2 so the LanParty can also have 2GB too!

I've got a problem with my board (used latest and 1.9 BIOS's).

After not being able to OC my Winchester 3200 (2.2GHz) past a feable 2.4GHz, I decided to buy an Opteron 148 (2.2GHz). I don't seem able to get past about the same speed with this CPU either, which makes me think I've got a dodgy Neo2.

I've tried all combinations of voltages, slack timings, re-installing XP, let my m8 have a go at OCing my old chip as he has a Venice 3000 @ 2.6~ with the same board.

Currently I'm stuck when first installing the latest Nforce drivers after a fresh XP install. It gets to installing the SMBus (?) when the screen goes blank and the PC reboots. It then won't load XP, therefore needing another reload.

Any ideas? If not then it goes in the bin and I'll have to get a new board, which also means another expensive change of gfx card, as I would want to go PCI-X..

It could also be a PSU problem or RAM problem I'm guessing.. but as it won't install at stock speeds, I think this is unlikely?

Cheers

I have a MSI Neo2 Platinum mb with a a64 3200+ win @ 2.7G 1.55v 40-49C with the OEM HSF do you think the AMD Opteron 146 2.0GHz 1MB will be a lot faster then what im runing right now if I can O/C it to 2.8+ and will my mb work with this cpu? or is it better to hold off on a new cpu and go for a new rig in 2006.
And no im not trying to be a smart ass

a64 3200+ win @ 2.7G 1.55v
MSI Neo2 Platinum bios v1.4
4x512 Geil PC-4000 @ 2.5 4-4-7 2T 2.85v
BFG GeForce 6800Ultra
Sound Blaster 2 ZS
250GB 133 8mb HDD

see his sig.

Geil PC-4000 are double sided afaik.

Definitely.

Use just a pair of RAM sticks in the bottom 2 slots, this will fix the clocking issues.

When you install the NForce Drivers and get issues, then thats just the same for me...

I usualyl get the issues with the O/B LAN... I am using the Gigabit one for my Ethernet not the NF one... Its fine with the supplied CD but recent updates from either nVidia or MS, causes the NForce LAN to lock the PC up...

I have had similar issues with the DFI LanParty Mobo too, but thats with the O/B Audio playing sounds just fine, but hanging after it... it seems to do WAV well enough, but not MP3? - It has the same issue with WMP and WinAmp, but if I use a PCI card, its just fine, so thats what I did.

So, just try disabling a load of devices in the BIOS, and enable them one by one and I recon you will probably get a duff device that simply wont work with the newer NForce drivers.

Alternatively, use the CD that came with it... They seem to work on for my MSI but again, with the Audio on the DFI, its just naff no matyter what drivers I try.

Back to the Overclocking bit, my Winnie 3200 clocks to 230FSB just fine but hangs any higher... Just knock it up a notch on the CPUV's and it will keep going all the way to 300 ( Using +10% too ) otherwise it stops at 298 ( ? )

Also, it does say quite clearly in the MSI Neo-2 Page that to fill up all 4 slots, you need to be using Single sided RAM not double.

I too am a bit miffed as I have a pair of TwinX and a pair of Platinums all are capable of 300FSB ( and I have done it ) but not together... So, I am stuck with only 1GB to play with when using these sticks, or 2GB with the OCZ ( 2x1GB Sticks ) but they are only 200FSB rated.

Is that the v5.11 nForce drivers that you are calling trouble? This is the first update I have seen since I bought my board in March. The update has only been there since 02-11-05. So your advice would be to stick with the 5.10's and the classic - if it ain't broke, don't fix. :D

Does anyone else know what has changed in this update? As I don't use on board sound, SATA, IDE, Firewire or the gigabut LAN - is there anything left that is newer for me :)?

Hi,

Yeah it was 5.11.. I was using 5.05 before I think. I've reinstalled XP this morning and used the original MSI driver CD which worked OK.

Just going to try OCing again.. this will soon tell me if it was a software issue holding me back before.. although I remember when I had a AC heatsink on my gfx card, it stopped my NB fan from turning for sometime, so I just have this feeling there is an underlying issue.

Cheers

There seems to be conflicting reports on the k8n neo2, some people say its good some people have aweful problems. Its really up to you to decide on that one. As for the ballisitix, judging form the anantech refview they look like great memory however the k8n neo2 hass compatibility issues with them. One or two people have been lucky and they work together, but i wouldnt risk it.

Crucial memory configurator says that they are compatible. Are you sure about this?
