The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

Hiya sorry to change subject but does anyone know if you can fit 120mm hsf on this board such as the zalman CNPS7700-ALCU Ultra-Quiet found here?
Or whether the arctic cooling freezer 64 Pro fits and if so are their any problems fitting it?

Thanks

I have an Artic Cooling Freezer 64 on my board. BUT I think they have changed the design. I had a conversation in a thread on this forum before about it.

(Assuming "North" is the top of the motherboard). The mounting brackets for the motherboard HSF are on the East/West sides of the socket. When I mount my fan, it then blows from East to West.

From conversation on this board, it looks like the Artic freezer now has the fan set so if blows South to North. So the guy I was talking couldn't install it on his MSI.

Look at the photo on the OCUK page, and you will see how the fan is laid out on the new 64 Pro. So this means it may well clash with the AGP socket if you have a big graphics card.

I would have thought the Zalman should fit. Get us some dimensions, and I'll meansure my board for you. ;)

Cheers for that MAllen ;), from zalman's website

"* Note : No motherboard components with a height greater than 39mm (1.53inch), as well as the
PSU, disk drives, VGA card, and RAM should be present within a 68mm (2.68 inch)
radius from the center of the CPU."

So basically nothing can be above 39mm within 68mm radius from the cpu.

I got the AF64 too!

It fits a charm.

Only have one issue with it myself, and that is, that I am using an ULTRA-X Connect PSU on my MSI NEO, and due to the position of the Floppy / IDE / Power connections on the mother board, coupled with the rock-solid cables on the PSU, means that the cables are pushed into the fan on the Cooler.

I have had to use cable ties to hold the cables together, and this did at first worry me slightly, however, its been like this for some months now, and it has not given me any problems at all.

Here is what I mean...

Oh yeah... I had heard the new ones dont fit.

Didnt think! - Never do!

The other cooler you may have noticed on the site, is the stock FX57 Cooler. Thats a lot more efficient than the AF64... Plus, unlike my AF64, it stops the fan when its cool enough, and in fact, that cooler was so good, it only came on when I started up fro abotu a second, and then it only came back on during heavy gaming sessions... the rest of the time, it was off.

That cooler is now in the DFI / ClawHammer 3700 PC, doing the very same thing... Nothing. I recon the fan can come off and I will be no wiser.

Sorry Ducky, no chance on fitting the Zalaman. A quick wave of a ruler in the PC (while on - so not fully scientific...) The AGP card is slightly closer than 68mm to the South. And the memory slots are 55mm away to the North. So you would have to do without the bottom two slots. :(

Cheers for that MAllen, looks like i'll be getting a 92mm version of the zalman flower, you mention the stock bracket may need a little persuasion to remove it.

Does that mean that it is glued on rather than screwed on?

Cheers

Just ordered new zalman flower for it as well as acousticase and akasa amber 120mm quiet fans should quieten down my pc :)

I am running a stock AF64, in a Thermaltake armor case, using the supplied 120mm & 92mm Fans, but at 7v instead of 12, and its silent.

in fact, my water cooled PC in the attic is louder.

Hi guys, I've got 4 X 512mb Ram stick in this board at at 2-2-2-5 at 2t with a X2 at 3800+ 2ghz. Does anyone know if there are known problems with this as im experiencing some at the moment like rnadom restarts and stuff though,

Ok memtest fails at 400 mhz with 4 sticks of ram. i guess this is memory controller issue on the CPU, Did they not fix this issue in the newer CPU revisions??? or is this a motherboard problem? Running the newest BIOS

I think I've just killed my board with a faulty BIOS update. I installed the Live Monitor utility from the MSI web site and launched it that way, everything seemed to go okay. Windows asked or the PCI bridge drivers upon next boot but when I tried to install the latest nForce3 drivers from nvidia.com the machine reboots. When I try to go into BIOS there's a black screen with flashing white cursor on the top left corner.

So anyone else had a similar fate or think it's just a faulty installation process?

sid - if memtst is failing, why are you assuming it is the RAM slots and not the actual RAM? Try testing your RAM one stick at a time. This will allow you to find the "bad slot". Or much more likely you will find the "bad stick" of RAM that is causeing your problems. :)

If all four sticks of RAM are identical, there shouldn't be a problem. Try testing a pair at a time. Stick them in the two lowest slots.

Then, if you only get memory errors when all four are in use, then you can point to the memory controler issue you mentioned. :)

afraser2K - MSI's Live Update is a bit "hit n miss". I'd personally never trust it.

You could try going back to the standard "boot from a floppy" method of blowing your BIOS? Will the PC boot from floppy? Or is it very stuffed.

If very stuffed - then you can buy a new bios chip for a few quid. May even be able to get one from MSI if ya lucky. (Definaly some UK companies who do this for less than £20)
