The New European Super (borefest) League

Also, what happens when inevitably the 400 million a year isn't enough anymore... Do some of the Super League teams then go on and create the Premier Super League where they get 600 million each? Its amazing. Rather than looking at the reason why the basement is flooding they just build a loft extension instead.

Season tickets don't typically include for 'non league' games do they? So not more for your money, more likely extra money on top if you want to attend all games. That's ignoring that once the league holds no value to these times as far as qualifying for top tier competitions, the league games included in your season ticket will potentially increasingly become B Team outings whilst the first team are rested for more important SL games.

If you're not a fan of these clubs, them effectively torpedoing the Champion's League in favour of their own closed doors competition is an even more extreme glass ceiling being imposed than the CL reforms already are. What's left to play for if the big boys don't let you join in their cup? You're only ever playing for second best and it becomes a worthless competition like the EFL trophy.

That's before you even consider the huge sums of money they're then going to award themselves for taking part, making it ever more difficult for anyone outside of the bubble to develop and retain any half decent talent.

The premier League would be a complete mess. Can you imagine Leicester competing with teams with the ESLs income?

Wealth redistribution and concentration - another thing for it to potentially ruin.
Really the players need to make a stand now as without them there’s no football to watch
Are they going to? I can imagine their agents whispering in their ears, this is a good thing.

If Klopp stands by his previous comments, he should resign tonight live on TV. That would be an amazing statement to make.

Apparently there is allowance that they would invite a few teams every season to play in this super league and I think they actually used the word INVITE, not qualify.

What does that mean? What if this team they invited do a Leicester City and beat them all and win? Would the 12 founding teams throw the toys out of the pram and not invite that team anymore?

Technically they could since these 12 teams make the rules, it means the entire competition a farce when the teams are not there on merit.

I'd hope it's a bit of a misnomer. Looking at other sports, players are technically invited to play at Wimbledon, or Augusta. In reality it means they have to qualify.

Fernandes has done a “Dreams can’t be bought” post, hopefully that’s about this and not just something poorly timed. Richarlison liked some posts criticising it. I think players probably want to speak up about it, it’s just who jumps first.

1st off, I hope Leicester would turn them down.
2nd I'm surprised we haven't been blamed more for all of this, when we upset the apple cart and went on and won the Premier League. :p

I get that everyone is all upset and everything - but amidst all the outrage people need to take a breath. Kicking 3 of the 4 remaining teams out of the Champions League - really ??! talk about cutting you nose off to spite your face. Also - would the FA really stop players from those 6 clubs playing for England - that doesnt even leave us with a "B" team, let alone a credible national side to take on the likes of a full strength Germany or France.

Far better to let the "Super league" play itself to a standstill and also watch those clubs suffer in their respective leagues because the players are too knackered to play.

I assume they'd get to stay another season or be made a permanent member, once the Super League is formed it'll basically end up like darts (BDO/PDC) where any club that proves itself to be of high enough quality ditches the pub league and joins the elites where all of the money is. (assuming they are kicked out of the Premier League)

Where's the point or interest in a competition that you don't need to qualify for on merit? This is purely a way for these 12 clubs to market themselves to wider and wider fan-bases, without any jeopardy of poor performance, failure to qualify, or relegation, and will mean that they grow bigger and bigger year on year, sucking players and money away from the rest of football. Day to day, there are benefits such as those you've pointed out, but conceptually it's disgusting. These are clubs that have grown out of their huge local fan support, then on the success of the Premier League, and they're basically saying "**** you all, we're off".
Well the answer is that it works in the US and key people involved in this are American.

Keep seeing "not being in the league through merit" said, but are we forgetting that these clubs have been chosen because they're the richest clubs in the world - how did they reach that point? Through being successful and/or well run clubs (that success could've been "bought" through wealthy owners sure, but that's been football for the past 20 years now) so is that not just another measurement of merit?

The richest clubs already get bigger and richer every year through existing models and competition. They already have more resources to attract players and essentially cherry pick from the smaller clubs.

It's not to compete with domestic football, it's to rival UEFA who nobody is happy with in the first place. Full of corruption and speaks volumes the fact PSG haven't signed up to it, essentially proving their ties to UEFA.

Does it devalue domestic leagues and cups? Perhaps, but I think a lot of people would be happy to see the League Cup disappear and teams already field weaker sides in Premiership or FA cup games either side of a Champions League game.

Then the various associations and media complaining of this being about greed and money, are we forgetting these very associations and broadcasters tried charging us £15 to watch Burnley vs Fulham? Same people who charge large numbers of households upwards of £80 a month to watch a few games a week (they don't allow us access to watch all games...). Associations who grant hosting of finals to countries with no football history/background or even infrastructure in place to support it simply due to money.

When the Premier League was formed people didn't like it. When the European Cup became the Champions League people didn't like it. When there's been format changes to any of these competitions, people didn't like it, but look at them now. Premier League is the biggest domestic league in the world. Champions League is the biggest football competition in the world.
