The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

It's just not for me. I'm not really a wide lens person when it comes to landscape, and whilst landscape isn't a high priority for me I don't like the samples online from the VR 1. It's primarily wedding togs complaining about the VR 2 focus breathing, i.e. they're shooting with a 135mm and go to the 70-200 to get in tighter... but can't... In this case the VR 1 does nicely as who cares about the edges for portraits?

I'm pretty sure I'd be happy with either to be honest, as I'm not that picky about sharpness. I just like my current 70-200 :) If I could do an easy swap to Nikon I'd be pretty tempted, I'm going through a gear lust phase at the moment :D If the A99 had a better spread of AF points and overall AF performance I'd be sorely tempted. Although realistically the glass I'd like with that is out of my budget!

I only carry 3 lenses at a time, and the 24 will be taking the place of my 14-24 for context shot's. But I will also be using it allot more indoors than I did the 14-24. The 14-24 wasn't fast enough for me as I missed the 2 stops of aperture. Often 14mm wasn't needed, but I found myself using 14mm when 90% of the time the picture would have looked better if I backed up and zoomed to 24mm, rather than just zooming out to get everything in just because it was easier.

Also I might use a 24-50 combo for smaller receptions where the 35-85 combo is a little too long.

Fair enough, I've been looking at getting either a 24mm or 35mm prime for my 5D at some point this year but I've somehow ended up with a couple of weddings to shoot in September.

I realise the 35mm would be the best choice for that, but was wondering where someone experienced with weddings would use a 24mm, as I was leaning that way until these wedding jobs came in.

If you have a 50 then i would get the 24. The 2 in tandem will work well together. 35 isn't wide enough for most weddings, you would need to use it in conjunction with a wide angle.

I've got a 40mm and 85mm currently but the 24mm could still fit in there quite well, it will be good for my astro work as well.

Do you think you'll use your 35mm less now then?

The 35 is an awesome lens for intimate 3/4 style shots that a 24-70 would often be used for in a studio setting.

In other news, expect a photo of a D800 box to show up in this thread from me in a week or so. Parents were feeling really generous for Oxford etc. so they donated a fair chunk of money and loaned me the rest that I can make back off of selling my Canon gear and a few of the massive prints I don't have any more use for. HELL YEAH :)

I've asked about it, they say it's too expensive since each department has a budget. Annoys me a bit but suppose I can keep asking.
