The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Hmmm I don't know much about D800 firmwares and the like at the moment - An Exception will likely be of help I guess? The AF definitely shouldn't be outperformed by a 5D2 so I'd look into that as a fault rather than design flaw. You're making me very worried that I'm going to hate my body when I get it this week! :O

You're going to love it dude! I wouldn't worry!

I think i've just over hyped myself about the D800. I was expecting a night and day difference and thought it would be big leap over my 5Dii when i really shouldn't have as at the end of the day, it's still a camera...albeit one with obscene MPs, colour depth and dynamic range!

Think the video above has finished processing. That focus ring doesn't sound right does it?

EDIT - One very good thing about the 24-70 is the total lack of any real CA. It's awesome!

One thing I don't like with the Canon bodies now is the function dial. AF AV etc. Why do they have a button now that you have to push to turn the dial. Has anyone ever moved it by accident before that stupid button was there?

Moved it plenty of times with the 5D2. (why 1D's button was nice to have).

You can also send the 5D2 to Canon and have it modded with a button.

Below is a focus test in extremely low light. Mine is the E version so it may focus a little better than a vanilla D800 due to slightly more light hitting the sensor and there being a little more contrast.

Another video is just uploading. The next test was done with slightly more light.

I wasn't aware the imaging sensor affected phase detect AF sensors? I'm pretty sure they're identical in the D800, D800E and D4. Contrast-detect AF in live view might be different but the ovf focus should be exactly the same.

Had some new toys turn up in the last week:

3 Legged Thing Airhead 1. I was going to buy a Manfrotto head but this was in the clearance for £40 down from £129 so I went for it. It also uses an Arca Swiss clamp and so lots of accessories are available; which leads on to the next item...

Kirk L bracket. I would never pay full price for one of these but I saw one going on ebay for cheap so I went for it.

Finally, a Triopo carbon fibre tripod. This is supposedly the chinese brand which 3 Legged Thing has copied their design from. In fact, it looks nearly identical to the ones they sell. The best part is that this one is carbon fibre and costs the same as their equivalent aluminium version. Build quality is excellent. I emailed the manufacturer asking how much it would be for me to buy a couple more foam grips and a short centre column. They replied saying that it wouldn't cost anything and all I'd need to pay for is postage. Sweet!
