The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

It's quite shocking what is being asked from Canon and Nikon for accessories in general, well all Camera gear in general is overpriced by quite a lot for my pockets:D

You would be surprised how small the margins are on most camera gear (bodies and lenses). Which is why most camera companies are struggling to be profitable (Nikon and canon are just about the only ones because they have both volume at the low end and at the high end where margins are higher).

It is rumors that on some of the cash-back deals Nikon's and canons profits are almost zero! Profit margins are often as little as 15%!

Accessories are overcharged and make far more profit. You can see this when in camera shops they desperately try to sell you a camera bag and a UV filter, the shop can make more profit from a cheap bag + filter than from the sale of the camera.

Buzzlightweight --- or anyone else..
Have you used that Yongnuo YN 568Ex Flash gun yet ? If so, how do you find it ?
I just knocked my Metz 50AF-1 on the floor and it is now faulty. I press the flash button and it fires a lot of Flashing light for 3 seconds. Still works on camera but when warmed up it will start to over expose. I then have to go to hss and use 1/500 at f11.
So was looking at that 568ex as it is cheeper and has hss. I use the CT-04 Wireless falsh triggers, will that 568ex work on them ?
Sorry for all the questions. I use a Canon 7D and 50D..
Cheers.

The thumb release features alone are really cool :D

With build quality and specs that rival or better the closest competition yet at half the cost, couldn't be happier!

This flash is a basic rip off of the canon 600ex, all bells and whistles, the only thing is its not weather sealed. not sure on the ct-04 trigger i just went in with the 622c's

I love it, so user friendly, and extremely versatile.

do you have any specific questions?

Actually weighs 0.8KG! Doesn't feel or look it but it's rock solid :) Everything is metal. I'll put up a review of it soon.

Yup, don't mount that lens in a hurry!

The 85mm f1.2?

Don't worry about it. The metal edge on the lens is proud of the glass, so that the glass does do not touch the mount on the camera. I mash the lens onto the camera all the time. You would have to be really determined to scratch it.

Any good? for a pro DSLR like mine with say a 70-200 f2.8?

Well, I've just put my 6D + 24-105 on it. So, hardly light weight gear. It's by no means perfect. But a 2s timer and I seem to be able to get shots of reasonable length happily, perfectly sharp.

It will also happily wrap around a pole, and hold the weight without slipping, so seems good from that perspective as well

So, from:

Did I really use that old thing, ever?? But bloody hell, that head is heavy compared to the tripod!

First impressions though, it is all one very well manufactured bit of kit. Everything snug and well fitting. Carbon fibre looks beautiful. Lovely smell of machine oil, reminds me of a new part for a car engine! Tripod seems to weigh nothing, picked box up this morning and couldn't remember what else I'd ordered that weighed so little. Head seems to adjust so well and smoothly. Only gripe perhaps is that the panning knob is on the right - feels like it would have made more sense to have it on the left so you could keep a finger on the trigger whilst panning. I know it's not fully designed for that, but just feels like it would make sense.

Otherwise I have this feeling of disbelief that I could ever have contemplated using the old cheapy tripod, the difference is so much more than I would have thought. Just wonder if a lightweight head might be needed for travel. Doing my bit to stimulate the economy it would seem.....
