The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Haha, I held off as long as I could but the combination of Canon's cashback offer and a trip to Le Mans next month made any further resistance futile :)

After one? Do it! You only live once :)

just got a 24-105mm f4L and a 430ex ii this month its going to be awhile before any new purchase is possible lol but yes i would love one but would setting for the 70-200 f4 is version ;)

I posted this over in GD the other day but I didn't realise there was this thread going!

Im a little jealous now!

70-200 f2.8, very nice!

Next lens I want is something to cover the 18-50mm range. Maybe the 18-50mm sigma f2.8 I think. Tamron do a 17-50 f2.8. I have a sigma 10-20mm and I like the feel of sigma lenses so I may just stick to sigma for my next lens.

Ah, I got the same - that'll be the recent misprice and subsequent honoring of the misprice? I got a D5100 a couple of months back, then a 55-200mm for ~£100, then the 35mm f1.8 is currently winging its way to me for £99 too (less the price of another gift voucher I had). Hoping it lives up to its promises, I didn't really have the cash for that but it looked too good a price to miss!

As the post above it was a misprice which they first cancelled then gave a gift voucher of £51 to honor it which I instantly snapped it. Incredible lens for the money! still learning though.

Not as exciting as some of the stuff on here but this has replaced my 4 year old 450D and Tamron 17-50 walkabout combo. Also brings back my 85mm 1.8 as the portrait lens it should be! I've wanted good low light performance on a body since visiting Notre Dame with a bridge camera many years ago so this is a welcome upgrade.

35mm next.. just need to contemplate on the variety.

I am looking for my first prime lens. I was tempted by the 40mm pan cake lens but I may as well just get the 50mm 1.8. Im using a crop sensor and was thinking 50mm will be a little to long.

I took a great set of portraits in the park with kids with a 50mm this weekends, superb for that. Very fast, very sharp at f4. Was great fun shooting with a prime. I've now written off my need for the pancake.

The 50mm is also a great hack lens to play with macro on the cheap with extenders and/or reversing rings. I would say go for it!

50mm on crop is great for portraits as has been said. However, I found that as a general use/walkabout lens my 30mm Sigma was a much better focal length. ~30mm on crop will give you the equivalent of ~50mm on full frame. 50mm on crop is around 75/80mm full frame. I use my 30mm far more than my 50mm.

The good thing about the 50mm though is how cheap it is! If you want it for portraits or experimenting then it's a great buy.
