The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

I will miss my Tamron, but not how noisy it was when focusing....

Have the same lens on our old 600D, amazing bit of kit... and turned a cheap entry level DSLR with kit lens into something much nicer :)

Reading around I'm not sure you can get any better in a zoom for a crop camera..

Arrived yesterday... to pair up with my 5D mk3 RAW :)

I'm really thinking the Sigma 35 1.4 will be awesome with this... should give me a super sharp and bokehlicious 50mm image on the C100..

Lugging my Redsnapper tripod around the other day I realised that this is insane and wrong. It's wrong to have a tripod where you'd rather leave it at home as it's too heavy and bulky. I love my Redsnapper RS-283 and RSH-12 Ball Head, don't get me wrong. But it's physically long and weighty. It's bascially a pain in the arse to carry around.

So I went on the hunt of a 'travel tripod'. I just want something that's small and will do a good job and I didn't want to spend the earth, I set myself a budget of £130 max.

I decided upon this:

When the box turned up I thought that there must have been a mistake. Then pulling it out of the box I realised this is exactly what I need.

Look at the size of this thing collapsed!

It's 36cm when collapsed and looks like a baby compared to the Redsnapper RS-283! Also weighing in at 1.3kg!

I took it out today and it's great, it is so much easier to attach to my camera bag and less in the way. More importantly it's extremely stable when fully extended. The twisty legs take a little getting used to, but I'm there already.

At the moment I have my RSH-12 Redsnapper ball head mounted on it, but I have ordered the smaller redsnapper ball head which will cut down the weight by about half.

I miss out slightly with the max height and losing the metal spikes on the feet but what's the point of owning a tripod if it's always left at home.

Looks good, what height is it extended? I have a big Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod, it's not the weight carrying it around that bothers me much, it's the taking it on holiday that causes issues, it barely fits in my large suitcase and takes up a large % of my allowed weight.

If you could take a few more photos that would be useful, what model is it?

It's the Velbon Ultra Rexi L.

It will extend to 153cm and it can spread eagle on the floor.

I'll take more photos tomorrow. :D

BruceLee, this is the thing. It's not always about weight, it's more so about how small can it become. Lugging a tripod around in it's own case feels wrong, I spent the whole day today with this Velbon strapped to my Lowepro AW400 and compared to the Redsnapper, it was actually more than do-able sitting it in the tripod holder and strapping it in. Packing a tripod in to a suitcase isn't fun, I'm boardering on doing a few days abroad and the thought of taking my Redsnapper... well it doesn't work basically.

Cheers, yes I know what you mean, I have the same bag and the current tripod isn't really suited to it. As long as it extends enough to give some flexibility I am happy. I'll give your links a read :)

I bought a Manfrotto case for my 055XPROB when I bought that, and then used it maybe 4 times before realising it's a waist of time and a hindrance. So for the last 18 months or so I've just put the tripod over my shoulder (quite often extended with the camera attached).

If you don't like the weight of your tripod, work out more. ;)

I got a Manfrotto case/bag for my 190CXPRO3 and sent it straight back - it was huge. Must order a strap instead as I reckon that will be more use

Apologies for phone pic of stuff, but:

Canon 100-400
77mm Polariser
Spare Battery for the 6D
2 more memory cards for holiday
Gorillapod ball head (managed to take weight of 6D + 100-400)
Also picked up a centre pinch cap for the 100-400

Realistically don't need anything for some time now. 24-105 and 100-400 cover a pretty massive area, and 50 gives some nice bokeh.
