The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

That's true, but is to be expected with a cheap lens. It's a great starting point either way until something better can be purchased.

Only issue with portraits is the bokeh quality isn't great due to the five blade aperture design.

Besides which it really isn't that bad and only becomes really obvious if you've got some out of focus highlights.

Nice upgrade bud. I should be selling my old 400D with the 18-55mm kit lens next week and im looking for an upgrade to cover 17/18mm up to 50mm.

This is a little expensive for me but its meant to be a great lens.

Picked this up for £480, if that's a bit too rich then get the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non VC. Great upgrade from the kit lens.

Limp willy waving...

Had delivered a Hähnel Giga Pro ii timer remote yesterday morning, straight off the receiver keeps constantly firing even when trigger turned off.

So emailed support this morning, within hours a reply saying they'll post a replacement and no, they don't want it back. Talk about customer service!!

Obviously the cynic in me says it hasn't arrived yet...

As the post above it was a misprice which they first cancelled then gave a gift voucher of £51 to honor it which I instantly snapped it. Incredible lens for the money! still learning though.

Mine arrived today! It's on the camera, but I haven't really had the time to play with it much. I'm in a drawing mood tonight, I think, but I'm looking forward to getting to know this lens. :)

You guys are all giving me lens envy!

I guess I need to start saving for some good glass. What would be the natural step up to my 18-135 IS? I'm thinking EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS?

Not as exciting as some of the stuff on here but this has replaced my 4 year old 450D and Tamron 17-50 walkabout combo. Also brings back my 85mm 1.8 as the portrait lens it should be! I've wanted good low light performance on a body since visiting Notre Dame with a bridge camera many years ago so this is a welcome upgrade.

35mm next.. just need to contemplate on the variety.

If you have a crop sensor you might miss the extra bit of wideness an EF-S 17-55mm would give you.

Shaz, Sigma 35 I assume?

Better be :p

Nah, Sigma quality issues put me off! </troll face>

In all seriousness, it probably will be, most of the benefits of the L but for almost half the price... also, the 30mm 1.4 DC I picked up (then sent back as I decided I was going FF) felt like I could have used it to hammer in nails.

Saying that, I do have an unfulfilled itch for a 16-35 and the 6D is quite decent at high ISOs... hmm.

Get the 35mm Sigma.

Shooting with a prime is amazing and the lens really is a corker. Don't use my walkaround 24-105mm these days.

Forget the 16-35mm :p

Well I've had it out this weekend at the zoo and at a family picnic and I have to say.. it's a revelation on both the body and lens front.

From being able to (easily) use back button focus with AI servo to be able to one shot/focus recompose to being able to track/focus to dialing in Tv/Av and allowing the camera to auto select ISO competently, it's made me refocus on composition/the actual shot as opposed to bashing my head against the settings (also, with decent kit there's less excuse for a poor shot). The sharpness and colours out of the lens in an unedited raw is also... amazing, to me at least.

I'm glad I've toiled with the 450d for the last few years as it's made me appreciate the setup all the much more!

The only negative... vignetting (although I'm quite a fan of the effect most of the time).

Last of my safari gear bought. Think I have it covered with a D300s, D800, 300mm f/4 and this 80-200mm, plus other bits. I don't want to spend any more money!

*cough* May have ordered a 600EX, 8 sanyo eneloop XX and a charger. Oh and a diffuser. It's taken me 8 years to get around to it, but I now own a flash :D
