The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Wanted to get into photography for some time, so thought this would be a good starter unit other than the normal phone-cam or pocket cam -

Its not as fan-dangle as some of the more expensive units, money was tight as it was part of a birthday gift, but seemed to have good features for the money, i was looking at getting a larger lens to work with it, something like the 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX, which can be had for around the £90 mark, or would there be better suggestions, would that be a good choice as an additional lens ?[/QUOTE]

The 55-200mm is a very good lens for the money and it compliments the kit lens you already have greatly.

I'm in a real pickle at the moment.

I'm really tempted to sell all of my SLR gear and get an X-Pro1 (especially as Fuji have the free lens deal on at the moment).

But I don't think I can bring myself to sell it, it's not exactly cheap kit and I've spent a lot on it over the years (D3 + lots of pro grade lenses).

Has anyone made a switch like this?

If I do I don't think I would sell the D3 body, as I doubt you'd get as much as I think for it, and if I want to go back to SLR I have that ready.

The biggest thing is I could sell my Nikon 70-200 VRII for almost the price of the whole X-Pro1 kit!! Hmmmmmm......

I was recently considering this deal as it looks amazing on paper, but after a bit of research and trying one in a shop I decided it was a too much of a compromise for me. It seems that Lightroom still cannot process the Fuji X files very well meaning fine detail can end up looking like a water colour painting. This coupled with the overall responsiveness of the system meant it was not for me, although it was a beautiful, well made camera :)

I've done a fair bit of reading and thinking, and firstly I didn't realise the x-Pro 1 had been out for as long as it has. Almost 2 years!

I'm not really keen on buying old tech, and I've read rumours an x-pro 2 (or whatever) may be announced very early next year.

The deal runs out at the end of January, so plenty of time yet.

I'll see how much attention this gets here but looking for suggestions for a bag/carry case for my 550D. Honestly not sure what style, either something just to protect it or maybe a backpack thing.
Say £30ish for budget?...

Or I may see if he'd (xmas pressie from my brother) get me a different lense...

Just pressed buy on a RSF-284 & RSH-61. Hopefully that should get here by Monday or something. Anyone know what courier they use? Pretty happy now, lens + tripod. I am however now completely utter ****ing broke :D

How about the Crumpler Jackpack 4000 - really like mine, well put together and can fit lots in it without it looking like an gigantic bag or getting in the way.

It fits my 650D with a large f2.8 17-55 attached in the first half + a small 50mm + another fat 10-22mm in the other half. Front pouch still has space for batteries, wallet etc. I use this as a walkabout bag 90% of the time.

IT ARRIVED :D

Indeed it is ;)
RSF-284 & RSH-61
The tripod itself should last me I have no intentions on getting anything within the foreseeable future that will deem it needing an upgrade. I may upgrade the head at a later date if I decide I need too.

I did struggle getting it into it's bag I'll admit D:

Black Friday, £130 later

Haven't had a chance to try it, but I've been looking for a decent tripod for a while, and when this came up on Black Friday, I figured I'd pick it up. For reference, Manfrotto 190cx3.

It seems reasonably stable, need to pick up a ball head for it at some point, it loses some stability when the legs are really out flat, but I've found a better way to attach camera for close to ground shots, just have to be ok taking shots upside down xD

Get rid of the centre column and attach the head straight to the tripod. It'll make the whole attachment more sturdy and a lot lighter, unless you need the extra foot of height and don't mind the stability issues.

I use mine with a 120-300 with added TCs and it's nice and stable in the above configuration.

Picked up a Nikon 50 1.4 from mpb for the D800, finally. Been umming and ahhing and waiting for Sigma to bring out a new version of their 50 (falling too far in love with the 35 to want to risk an update!), this way I figure as long as I keep it in decent nick I can sell it on for about the same if and when the siggy comes out. Obviously it's not quite up to the 35 technically, but honestly I feel so much more at home shooting a 50 very excited to get back into it - it's been about a year since I last shot my 5D + 50 combo.
