The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Yeah own it, that was from its first flight on Friday. You can't realistically hire them because the pilot is instantly responsible for its airworthiness, plus you need to log flights and battery usage, and the courses to gain permission from the CAA cost about £3k in all and a load of hours anyway.

I've been tempted by the OCA course.

I think you should start a thread for it.

I might. There is one on Talk Photography if you want to read more form people who have done it and other courses in the degree

Only just finished building my site and blog as you need to keepa blog of your progress and exercises as you go through

Not anywhere near enough decent pics on there but for the moment it's what I've got.

As for willy waving, WEX just emailed me to say they have my 105mm Sigma Macro in stock at last!

I hate people like that. Even more so if they are supposed to be there to help and sell you something. That's why I just go to John Lewis lol.

Enjoy the lens, it's a corker!

Last time I was in John Lewis a guy with a Nikon shirt on couldn't wait to tell me how crap canon were compared to the Nikon master race. I was fairly ambivalent between the brands (currently looking for my first SLR) but his attitude really bugged me, especially as everytime I made comparisons to a similar level canon, he'd find some way to slate it. I'd already done my research, and half the points he was making were wrong anyway!

Now on the lookout for a 650d, preferred the ergonomics, and several friends shoot canon, so I have a much better chance of being able to borrow lenses!

Wow I'm quite surprised about that. John Lewis has only ever been a blissful shopping experience for me. They've never bugged me or tried to tell me what to buy or anything like that. The most they normally even say is "good morning sir" as they walk on by!

Going Canon would have been a good idea for me as I don't know anyone who shoots Nikon and about 8 who shoot Canon!

Turns out I am not the only one who has had a similar experience in there. I normally don't bother reviewing/complaining about bad experiences but this was no ordinary experience.

Absolutely loving the prime 35mm :D

EDIT - wow, reading the other reviews in more detail - it's astonishing they're in business. They are utter scum. I have a right mind to take this further/higher highlighting how terrible they are but it's probably pointless.

I can only really suggest forwarding your comments to Nikon on twitter, and to watchdog with a link to the other reviews. They might go have a look.

That places sounds like fun to go in and kill a few minutes :p

Armed with 5 really specific technical questions and see if they can answer.

"Are you going to buy it or what?"

"I will if you can answer my questions!"

lol

How odd. JL is normally brilliant for me. In fact, I went in there a few weeks ago to get a Samsung soundbar and a Panasonic salesman sold it to me. He was really helpful and when I asked about him trying to sell me a Panasonic soundbar his response was, "it wouldn't be right for your setup" - refreshingly honest - I guess the Nikon guy was just a plank :D

Anyway, I buy Panasonic camera equipment, so it's all good :D

Strolled into a camera shop yesterday to see if they had the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G lens for my new D5200. A very strange conversation indeed, he seemed to laugh me down at the thought of even buying the D5200 as my first DSLR and asked was it because it had the word Nikon in it? I explained I had done my research and decided with that but I wanted an additional lens, but at this time I couldn't afford one in the hundreds of pounds. He almost seemed insulted of considering the NIKKOR 35mm, perhaps he had a traumatic experience with Nikon as a child. Any way after more research I bit the bullet and got it, I do not regret it one bit. IQ is amazing and I love the bokeh effect, well worth £128!

Same lens I got recently although from Amazon with the Nikon £20 cashback. I got the 50mm too to try out and it was good with a more obvious bokeh effect, but I'll buy that later (next year maybe) when my baby is more a toddler. Very happy with my purchase.
