The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Anyone know of a place that can service cameras?

Just want to get my body health checked and maybe get the focus alignment on my lens looked at. Just for piece of mind more than anything else because i feel like either my lens is a bit soft or the focusing on the 5D IS really that bad.

Send both the lens and body to canon Elstree or Fixation. Both are Canon approved service centres.

Call up for a quote and turn around time first.

Or Lehmanns.

Thanks guys!

Anyone had any experience with them then? Did they check lenses and adjust accordingly?

In the last few days my 24-105 has developed a squeak when focusing from far to near.

I've used both Elstree and Fixation and about to send my 580exii to Elstree to be fixed.

Both are competent but Elstree is technically the official one, what you get if you google their home page.

All of them will accept your CPS membership for shorter turn around time if you have it.

I am sending the flash to Elstree this time is because they have a fixed cost £104 on my flash where as Fixation quoted me £60 for labour and then parts on top which could be a bulb or £300 for the PCB.

I have 3 580exii and 1 550ex

The dead 580 did die during a off camera shoot I think, it did have the shield on though but I am not sure if that was the reason it died (FLEX), there is a pre flash but no main flash.

They die with or without the shield, tbh I don't know why you just don't use 430exii's instead, and just a 580exii or 550 on camera.
You then don't have to worry about shields and socks etc...

I had 2 580exii and a 550 ex when I bought the flex, I wasn't going to get 2x 430...

I normally use the 550 off camera when I need one anyway, cba messing around with the shield. That time I needed 2 off camera.

Speaking of the 580EXII, I've just acquired one of these myself to replace my 430EXII :)

Wasn't planning to any time soon but, as it's now been discontinued, and the replacement is nearly twice the price, I suspect used values might increase in the near future.

Aye the second hand value is most likely gonna rise at some point due to the insane price of the latest model. Not sure what canon are thinking of with the current pricing model.

3rd party whoop!

Indeed, they've done the same with the 24-70. Only a very few places still have new stock of the mk1 and it's up to around £1100 now for the last few new ones. Makes me very glad I picked mine up last year for £900!

Eh? Don't follow.

Price of the 600EX-RT is actually coming down, it started at £675 and has fallen below the £600 mark. The 600EX started around £560 and has dropped to £493 in some places. I would expect the price drops to continue over the next few months as stocks of the 580EX MKII dry up. The 600EX prices were probably capped artificially high to ensure retailers didn't take a hit on the 580EX

Interesting. Can't really say the same about the 24-70 though. A lens which was dipping under £1k new has been discontinued and replaced with one which is over twice the price and isn't even available yet, to my knowledge. For one of their most popular lenses, that just stinks of profiteering to me I'm afraid.

The RRP isn't what you pay on the Street. I would expect the price to tumble quite a bit when it is available. Probably will settle around the £1200 to £1300 mark I would think.

24-70 mark ii? £1200?

Not this year i don't think. I think £1,500 would be where it will settle at.

Agreed. Be a while before it's at that price though and, even when it is, still 50% more than the outgoing model.

What amazes me is that it's actually difficult to find a new 24-70 of either type right now, a mad situation for such a 'staple' Canon lens.

Probably

1 : people snapping up the old one because it is still a gem, just because the new one is out, it doesn't immediately make it bad.

2 : people buying the new one because it is new.
