The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Good to hear, I also considered the 100-400 but I was happy to trade off the extra 100mm for a newer/sharper lens. This is also still the same height as my old Tamron 70-300, just a bit chubbier! The only thing that annoys me is the lack of a tripod ring mount.

I know, but I think it's the only L telephoto that doesn't have one in the box included. I guess I'm lucky to get a hood and pouch with it, which is generous of Canon :p

£150 odd too, gits.

Might be worth trying it with a 1.4x TC to take you up to 280mm?

I have been thinking about that as an option, which would certainly be cheaper... but, TBH I'm not a huge fan of TC's with a loss of light and quality... esp. starting at f/4.

There was one in a local LCE for £145 [not sure which revision]... I may just pop back with my camera and ask to try it, so I can gauge the performance.

Your 70-300mm looks beautifully compact as well.

True, you can rent one from Fixation for £15 if you wanted to give it a blast. This one is supposed to be sharper than a 70-200 with a TC though. It's exactly the same length as the non L 70-300 IS, just a bit fatter.

Okay, cheers... all good food for thought. The size of the 70-300 is very appealing. Girth over length is more important apparently, but I'm not sure my wife is interested in lenses... she takes the p*** each time these long white things pop-up on the monitor

My GF doesn't get it either, doesn't stop me :p

I've taken a few test shots to make sure it's behaving but I'll post some meaningful samples next week.
