*** The new MacBook/MacBook Pro thread, all info in here ***

there are some handy preinstalled programmes in OSX i have to say compared to what you get with Windows (XP, not used Vista) but still the specs arent hardcore enough to give the price.

LED screen has a cost implication, as does the backlit keyboard and sure as hell that fancy trackpad does. It's the little things which add up. Magsafe is going to cost more than cheap as it can be made PC laptop bricks...

just another thought. so why do people who already have a MBP or the latest MBs need a new MBP/MB?

surely the specs on them now are usable and not least shoddy? how extreme are you guys pushing the these laptops?!

Well, I personally need it because I still have an original macbook pro with the core duo chip in it, it won't take more than 2GB of RAM and thats a problem.

I've not read the other posts I'm just throwing my 2p in the common lot.

I actually like the new MacBooks. I think they look really smart, and since my MacBook is falling apart at the seams (literally) the aluminium casing is a big plus for me. Glass screen equally nice. I also don't use firewire, the processor and graphics are fine for what I need it for, and the new trackpad and it's associated features will be a nice bonus. The price doesn't particularly bother me as it's around what I expected.

However I won't be buying one.... yet. Aside from the fact I simply can't afford one and I want to get some more use out of my 2 year old MacBook, I want to wait for any problems to surface. I'm thinking maybe after Snow Leopard is released.

yeah waiting for Snow Leopard before my next purchase

end of the day = well over priced, even when taking into consideration the fluctuations in the markets atm

lesson - apple nearly always shafts you

Well I actually meant the aluminium case itself. As nice as it looks, it seems to be a rather expensive addition for people who aren't really going to be bothered by it (I think it's better on the MBP only).

This is a major struggle for me, as I really really really wanted one before seeing what Apple have done. Apart from the case, the touchpad changes worry me and the "gloss only" screen as well.

The HE discount softens the blow somewhat, but it's still £125 the wrong side of painful, especially as i'm going to need a case and a mouse.

Wow this came at the right time. I'm getting my old 17" Macbook Pro replaced.
Spec wise would you guys go for a 15.4" or the 17"? I don't really need the screen space anymore as I've got it hooked up to a 23" ACD. Will the 15.4 be quicker (given the FSB/RAM speed increase)?

What's the deal with the warranty if bought through the higher education scheme? Will a MacBook pro come with 3 years to take away the need for apple care?

You get 3 years as standard with HE purchases as opposed to 1 year with normal purchases. The extra £58 they try to get you to pay is for extended phone support.

Why don't you buy one of the 'old' White MacBooks?

Only major difference I'd say is the GPU!

People who are objective about their purchases as opposed to buying anything and everything with an Apple logo on regardless of price and acting like keynotes are Waco cult speeches? I'd much sooner be a pessimist than a sheep.

But you're tarring everyone with the same brush. Or treating anyone who has made a purchase tonight as 'a sheep'.

The prices may have been steep, personally I think they were very much so, but if people could then go on to justify the purchase then so be it. It doesn't make them a stupid or insane person in my opinion.

I addressed no one by name but it happens every time the conferences come around. People seem to get strangely jealous or something... needing no invitation to react ridiculously when the prices come up or the product doesn't have something.

Objectiveness in a potential purchase or product is more than welcome, the industry would get nowhere without it, but it's not just that.

With Apple you pay a premium yes, but that premium is justified for the majority of customers. If it can't justified, then buy something else?

Thought I'd share my opinion.. Haven't read the thread.

Liking the new designs, at least they're now offering a unified range but overall it's a step back. Why?..

  • Lack of HD drives. No excuse is worth that omission.
  • Reduced student discount (- £100)
  • Glossy-only (I like glossy, but a lack of BTO is poor for those who don't)
  • No TRUE 17" refresh (800Mhz chipset, older DDR2 RAM :o)
  • Useless resolution on the 15" model (1400x900)
  • I suspect this pseudo "dual" graphics thing will be bugged as it's REV A
  • 8 business days is essentially 2 weeks TO SHIP, nevermind the delivery (nice available-now)

I was considering buying the MBP when I saw the looks, and I actually think the trackpad idea is neat but now I've viewed the specs and there's nothing really that interests me.

A good update for the MacBooks, but a complete head-up-ass move on the MBPs. You'll see a lot of backlash about this.. they've basically said that "consumers love glossy.. consumers love x, y, z... here, we're forcing the Pro's down the same route" that's bad. That's why there was a difference.. poor.
