*** The new MacBook/MacBook Pro thread, all info in here ***

Just got back from Stormfront in Plymouth.

What a load of pains in the rear they are.

They told me that I couldn't have HE discount as it was a "website only" thing, and that i'd have to order it direct from Apple.

It's going to take 3 working days for the extra to clear from my savings into my bank account, so i've got time to figure out exactly what I want, but it looks like being the base Macbook (£818).

I'm going to nip into the Exeter one on the way home today and ask them if they do HE discount. If they do, they'll be getting my custom.

Back from the Exeter store.

They do give HE discount, so they'll be getting my custom. Now it's just the agonising wait until late next week. Also they say that the stock often comes in and just flies straight out the door, so I should ring ahead and check that they have some before going down.

Oh, and there's another problem. I got a letter from my Uni today telling me that they have a £750 bursary if I want to go and collect it. Just when i'd settled on a MB, now i'm looking at the MBP and MBA... :o

Get a MBP :D

Or a MB with SSD.

Well, I went from considering a normal white MB (as my initial thought about the MB Alu was that it was too expensive) to wanting the MB Alu, and now i'm considering the MBP!

I don't think i'll go for the MBP in the end though, I didn't want to go over 13" from the start, and with it's 9600M GT i'd just game on it when I should be working! :o

One question though - at it's current price and the price of the MB Alu, would you consider the Air worth the money? It's quite a sexy, smart little machine and would be amazing for portability. It also keeps the 13" screen.

[Edit] It seems to be an extra £400 for what is just a decrease in thickness, but you get a slower CPU and less battery life.

MB Alu for me then. :)

Your in the same boat as me, im typing this on my white MacBook at the moment (the current base model) and have a 2.4Ghz new MacBook Pro on order. Before Tuesday I had not really considered the Pro at all as the standard is fine for my needs really but after seeing the prices after the event it made me think that the 2.4Ghz Pro is probably the best value for money so thats what I went for. :D

The wait is killing me. Annoying that US customers who ordered online got their MBs next day delivery! Probably still 2 weeks plus wait left for us.

Tute - get a Pro. You'll thank me for it later :p

My lecturers won't - i'll be sat there playing WoW and the like on it in lectures! :o

I really think it's a good idea for me to just stay with a normal MB. I appreciate the input but there are two main reasons.

a) I want to go 13" screen or smaller.
b) £818 is a lot, and although I have it, i'd feel really guilty spending £1k+ on a laptop.

See if your local Apple shop have any in stock?

I love the way everyone complains about the prices, lack of spec bump, but theres still a good amount of people going to buy them. Apple really do have a tight grasp on people!

How else can they get away with charging what they do. They sell a lifestyle product with the cliental to match. They don't spend millions developing brands for nothing.

Check the Apple online store.
£60 off a printer
£95 off an ipod nano (only for those in HE)

both have to be bought from the Apple online store. if you buy under the HE scheme there is a big discount and you end up paying very little for the extras

You know, I've been using PCs for nearly twenty years and having finally made the move over to MAC -
I'm genuinely wandering where my head has been for all those years.

I'll tell you;

In MSCONFIG.EXE to try and try and try to resolve hardware and software issues on startup,

In ctrl + alt + del; invoking Task manager to stop this app, restart that app, see what app is causing the freeze before the crash, etc,etc ad infinitum...

In really shoddy interfaces of windows that don't really have a relationship with one another, they just 'co-excist' - not really 'joining-up' computing at all.

Here, on day two, of using the new MacBook pro and I find myself feeling absolutely liberated from the confines and confusion and sheer annoyance that was ms windows.

I just wish I'd done it sooner.

I'm not a newbie - I'm MSDN, Beta'd the hell out of Vista, project managed a team on divising compression utils for MP10, etc. - but those days are over. Sorry Bill. You've retired from MS and so, have I.

I am MAC.

Have a nice day.

I'm largely a PC guy, though I like the look of the new MB's, though it's ridiculous they still only come with 2GB. The extra 2GB upto 4GB probably costs Apple £10-15, though they milk their users for £100, lol! At the new MB price point 4GB should be standard.

Elsewhere a whole 4GB is available £35-50.

I do love it when people who have used windows for years spend naff all time with a real operating system and fall in love.

BlackAle, the extra 2GB is DDR3 remember, I havent found a price for it anywhere Ive looked online so Im sure it would be about £80-90, not much difference.
The only difference being, buying it form Apple costs £94? Buy it from a shop and do it yourself costs £90 then you can sell your 2GB and get some money back, sounds great?
But how many people have DDR3 laptops and want 2GB? No one, every gets 2GB and wants 4GB so I dont think its much difference if Apple do it for you!

It's DDR3 1066mhz, it's not 35-50. It's 85 quid as an upgrade.
