*** The new MacBook/MacBook Pro thread, all info in here ***

Hows the SSD working out for you? No hiccups I hope. Wonder if actual real world usuability is as good as they say it is. ;)

It's working great. I'm not getting any of the problems associated with this drive and Windows. Very happy with it.

Hi. So I basically have enough money saved up now to buy a MacBook Pro and I can get a good discount via my University. Before I go ahead and buy one, is it worth waiting a while just in case someting else comes out or should I just buy it now, no point in waiting?

Thanks!

Both the MacBook Pros and MacBooks are in mid-cycle at the minute, so no real updates expected for a while yet. :)

From my understanding, Snow Leopard is an updated operating system from OS X. Just wondering what the benefits would be if I waited for this?

I decided to buy a MacBook Pro in the end. If we all waited for updates in technology then we'd been waiting forever :) should be with me within a week and I'm very excited! I am a first-time Mac user so I was just wondering if there were any cool guides or tweaks/tips that I should know about? Thanks again

Snow Leopard wouldn't have been a massive reason to hold off anyway, so enjoy your purchase. :)

Plenty of tips and tweaks knocking around the forums.

Good choice. I've had mine three years now and never looked back!

Right, following the thread here I popped into a well known high street retailer on the way home just to take a look at the laptops. I was leaning towards the MBP but after my visit I'm really not sure now.

The 15" MBP seems on a quick look to be too large. It's going to be used for general plonking around, a bit of browsing, a bit of email and just an expensive toy type laptop. The 13" screen on the Air looks just the right sort of size. They didn't have a Macbook on display so I'm going to get to an Apple store in the next week or so for a proper comparison but at the moment the Air is coming out as the winner.

I was concerned that it has the button on the mouse pad rather than the new system of the whole pad clicking but it didn't seem bad at all like that. It was noticably slower than the MBP I played with but I guess that's expected bearing in mind the difference in CPU speed. If I do go for the Air, I'll spec the CPU up to the 1.86GHz version which will increase performance a tad.

I was also quite surprised by the heat coming off of the Air, or rather the lack of heat. I know the old models get very hot but this one was only warm to the touch in one place. I did ask if it had been switched on all day and it had, but it may have been sitting idle all the time. That's something else that will be more obvious in an Apple store as I think they'd be getting more use there.

Decisions, decisions!

I'd try an Unibody MacBook. The 13" screen is the perfect size for browsing on your lap (as you have found out from looking at the MBP) and the MacBook has the no-button trackpad (I tried it and it's OK but I still like having a buton)

The Air is expensive, very limited on expansion (only one usb + displayport), and has no removable battery (no big issue to me - YMMV)

Like I said in the other thread had the Air been around when I got my MacBook that's what I'd have gone for.

Still get yourself on a MacBook.

Thanks Splodge, I shall get to try a Macbook before I decide.

Slogan - Why do you say that? I'm interested in opinions and reasons.

Whilst the MacBook Air is a nice machine I personally just don't see the reasoning for it when compared to a MacBook. Which to me is sturdier, a bit cheaper, has more possibilities connection-wise and is obviously faster.

I think you would be happier with it for those reasons, even if it isn't for any heavy lifting.

I spent some time yesterday in an Apple store and I'm now pretty much decided.

The Air is fantastic but it's too slow. Because I've got the Mac Pro, I'd be really frustrated by the lack of speed of the Air and I don't like the fact that it doesn't have the new trackpad. The MBP is just too large, so the top of the range MP with extra memory will do the job very nicely. I wanted the faster one just because it's faster and because it has the illuminated keyboard - Some of the time I will be using it in a dim room so that's handy to have. I'll retro-fit a bigger and faster hard drive in straight away.

So I shall be ordering in a couple of weeks when my expenses come through (I tend to use my expenses as a mini savings account :))
