*** The new MacBook/MacBook Pro thread, all info in here ***

Makes sense. :)

Thinking about purchasing one shortly myself - not sure whether to go MacBook or MacBook Pro though. Hard to contain the greed for the quicker options.

Feek the Air isnt as slow as you actually think, yes of course it is compared to the Mac Pro!

What do you want a laptop for? because im more than confident the MBA will cover those tasks and more!

Safari, Mail, iTunes, iLife? It's all gonna run smoothly on a MBA?

Don't forget good people you can get 3% cash back via quidco. Doesn't sound like much but money is money.

Yes it is a good site BUT people here use Higher Education discount, you can't have both!

I need to have that site as my homepage, cos' most of what I buy online I can go through that but I always forget! :(

Damnit, I'm now reading more than one review which states that the screen on the Macbook is noticably inferior to that on the Macbook Pro or the Macbook Air.

This disturbs me somewhat.

I wouldn't let that put you off. I have the same spec machine you have just ordered and use it pretty much for the purposes you are describing (i.e. general sufing/email, no Photoshop/design work etc). I upgraded from an Dell XPS 1330 with an LED screen. The display on the macbook is every bit as good as the Dell (which was super bright!) The only thing that bugs me is the keyboard - the keys are mushy and the enter key is tiny. It seems to me the old Macbook Pro had a much better keyboard.

I would say that weather or not they are overpriced depends on who is looking at buying it. I had one for a while, and on reflection, I do think they are over-priced for what they are. They just can't do anything that justifies the price compared to another none Apple machine, lets leave out the OS when trying to decide this, it's not worth all that money, and another machine can be made to run OSX (even if Apple doesn't like it).

I asked AQA (as I'm asking a lot of people)

In the sterile, ideal environment of a shop the screen looked perfectly fine. However, the screen on my Dell laptop looked just as perfectly fine when viewed in such an environment but just get slightly away from the correct viewing angle and it's crap.

I've been using the Dell in situations where it's been difficult to get the viewing angle spot on and will be doing the same with the new laptop so that's why I'm concerned.

Decision made.

I went to a local store and spent some time with both the Macbook and Macbook Pro today (luckily they had both models on display which they didn't when I went last time) and they were next to each other so I was able to get them both displaying exactly the same things and with the colour settings the same. I then moved all around them, angled the screens, checked how they look at different angles etc.

I must have looked a bit odd, ducking and weaving because one of the assistants came over and looked a bit purturbed as she asked me if she could help. I explained what I was doing and she was fine with that.

The Macbook screen is inferior to the Macbook Pro, of that there's no doubt but it's not as bad as the reviews I linked to earlier seem to indicate. When the viewing angle is spot on, the colours are not as bright and it just seems a bit duller but the correct viewing angle is noticeably smaller than the Pro.

I just know (because I know myself and how I think) that if I get the Macbook then I'm going to always have the thought on the back of my mind that I've got a unit with a screen that's not as good as I could have had.

Still, the size of the Pro hasn't reduced since I last saw it and it's still huge. So I asked, and they let me go into the business area and take both the Macbook and the Macbook Pro with me. I was impressed by this.

You know what? The MBP isn't too large when it's sitting on my lap. I do have a large lap though :)

I shall get a Macbook Pro.

Well, the limitation to Apple hardware is largely artificial, so I can see his point when discussing value of the machines.

Well yes, that is exactly why I said that. It is artificial, and I do things by my version of the 'book' not Apple or Microsoft's (so far as I can help it). They can take their artificial limitations and shove 'em up their posteriors as far as I am concerned.

In an ideal world, I'd design and write my own OS, but I do not possess the knowledge or the time to do that. And then I'd have to write everything I wanted to run on it too.

Enjoy your MBP though Feek, it's a good machine, f you're prepared to pay the price then I think you will be quite happy with it. Too big is definitely not something I would accuse the MBP of been, not for a 15" model anyway.

Having now managed to get rid of my M1330 - looking at a Macbook 2.4ghz as a replacement!

1) How did everyone manage to get HE discount without student cards? :o

2) Are there any accessories I should be looking at getting with it?

3) If I want to run osx and windows 7- can I do this without purchasing bootcamp? i.e. is bootcamp free and comes with the macbook as standard? Does it support windows 7??

Cheers all!
