The new Orange Android phone (San Francisco) £99...but a Question??

New JellyFish is out. I'll be updating tonight as i'm still on RLS7.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

About RELEASE
This is a custom ROM based on the Japanese Softbank 003Z ROM.

IMPORTANT! Everyone must wipe data/cache when updating from RLS7 or erlier. Even if you tried RLS7.5 (sorry but I signed some more stuff after RLS7.5 so a wipe is needed)

When updating to RLS9 from RLS8 a full wipe is not needed but you must wipe data from the three Contacts related apps and resync your contacts. If unsure, do a full wipe.

NOTE! This also installs a bunch of firmware files from the Hungarian 256->512Mb update. It works fine on my OSF but do NOT blame me if it bricks your phone. You do not NEED to change partition sizes to use the "lite" version. It's just for advanced users who want to get more space for apps in /data. If this sounds confusing, then it's not for you.

Don't forget to rename or remove the "image" folder on the SD-card when you are done so that you do not reinstall your phone by mistake later on. Sometimes it enters the "image" install when you try to boot into bootloader mode if the image folder still exists on the card.

RLS9 -2011-01-24

  • Compiled 2.2 versions of Contacts and ContactsProvider from AOSP source. Fixes join/split of contacts but you'll lose group support and the ZTE dialer codes. Use addon if you prefer the old versions.
  • Changed automatic brightness to go as dark as the Chinese 2.2 build.
  • Fixed charging LED to work like in 2.1 builds.
  • Added IPv6 privacy options to /system/bin/userinit.sh. Edit userinit.sh if you for some reason do not want this.
  • Added examples on how to set min and max frequency in userinit.sh (for advanced users).
  • Replaced Mms.apk and SpareParts.apk with versions I compiled from AOSP source. (propably no difference at all)
  • Fixed the original FM Radio problem in kernel and re-added the original ZTE FM Radio app (unmodified version).

I'm loving this phone / android experience so far (had it sub 1 week)

Need a few questions answering

1. I am using start talking and vlingo apps, which work great when I'm connected to a wi-fi network, but not when the are using 3g? Would seem a bit pointless or am I missing a trick

2. If I scroll right on the default android launcher I get a screen with 5 buttons,

Picture can be seen here

http://cdn.androidcommunity.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/htc_hero_android_2-1_sense_2-540x403.jpg

wi-fi bluetooth and 3 others, what are these 3 buttons for? as when I press them it doesn't seem to give me an obvious answer, apart from the screen backlight

3. Is there an app that can give me actual control to say;
The following apps are allowed to access 3g whenever they please, however these are locked down

4. How to I file the menu bit - i.e all the apps, as I now have pages and pages of apps

Cheers for any replies:) android newby

No idea. I've not used either of those apps.

From left to right:
Wireless, Bluetooth, GPS, Data Sync, Screen Brightness

Droidwall (It does require root access though)

I'm running a MoDaCo 2.2 custom ROM atm with a Gingerbread theme and currently getting 900-1000 on Quadrant and 37-40fps on Neocore. I'm going to try JJellyfish again later as it's the one I've enjoyed most so far, but MoDaCo isn't far behind! Only difference I've found really between the two is that one is smoother in some parts of the UI, while the other is smoother in other parts of the UI! And I guess the difference in Quadrant scores is all due to Stagefright and (possibly) HW acceleration, which I would like to know is worth it or not.

That is indeed an interesting read. When I was trying the 'bump' technique, each time it was green to say it was fully charged, it would go orange again when I restarted the phone. I'm guessing it keeps thinking it's at 100% when in fact it's at 90%ish so it continues to charge more. I must say, I've noticed that it doesn't lose as much charge compared to yesterday when on standby, especially in the morning!

I heard late last year that you could get these for £70 if you're an existing orange customer - I assume that offer has gone now?

Not sure if it's still on, should be. You need to call the sales line and ask for a discount basically.

Results vary depending on who you get on the phone, you'll either get 'no discounts', £20 or £30 (maximum) discount. Some people were told its only for customers who spend a lot per month, some people say they got £30 discount using an old simcard that they haven't used for months. It's 0800 so just keep trying. It works out at £70 + £10 topup

Yeah I got it when they had some percentage off as well, so it was £74.15 inc topup. I just found someone who is a PAYG orange customer and asked them for their number, no problems at all :)

Whats the best rom out there for the SF atm? think my wifes is running modaco R4 or something, was about to try the latest jellyfish rom, suggestions?

Im thinking of ordering a white one to play with.

Whats the general use battery life like on these?

Can they do everything my iphone can?

Oh and are they really that easy to unlock and flash and stuff?

Battery = naff

Why? What ROM?

Mines been on for about 5 days now, and its got 20 odd % left

If you leave everything turnred on, its going to drain the battery, just like the IPhone

My battery can last a week, easily, depending on what I do, naturally, if you leave the Wi-fi and GPS on, it drains the battery (like the IPhone), if you play games with it, its going to drain the battery (Like the IPhone)

Theoretically they can yes, depending on if the Apps are available, but then it depends what you use your IPhone for.

Yes, they are generally easy, there are several guides posted by people here on this thread, and some on the 1st post i believe :)
