The new Orange Android phone (San Francisco) £99...but a Question??

Rooted, custom recovery image, Modaco Rom installed :D:D:D:D:D More first impressions to follow! How on earth was this phone only £100.....

Anyway, do I *have* to install a custom mod on there if I root it, or can I remove the crappy orange bloatware by just rooting and uninstalling?
I'd suspect you could but probably best to check on the Modaco forums.

Is it worth me selling my hero on a trade in site and buying one of these until my contract expires in January, then I will be upgrading to a Desire HD. Just wondered if this is much better than the hero as i believe i can still get about £80 for the hero on one of those old mobile phone websites? Am I wrong?

Edit : Just checked and Mazuma are offering me £92 for my hero....

Would i have to install an original ROM back onto the handset anybody know, as i'm running a cutom one at the moment. What do they do with the phones on them sites?

No idea, but it will be quick and painless to flash to a standard rom, they won't notice the fact it's got root access :D

I've been playing with my San Fran for 20 minutes since rooting/flashing it and it's an amazing upgrade from the Hero given the price. When they shoehorn 2.2 in it will be ridiculous value!

Did anyone manage to get theirs for £79.99, if so, how?

I got mine for £78.99 including the £10 top-up, so only £68.99 for the handset (£10 top-up is mandatory obviously). Its easier if someone in your family is on Orange. My mum has been with Orange for 10+years, so I just said I heard you could get £30 loyalty discount and they said that was fine!

Think it only works for people on Orange PAYG, not contract from what I have read. They are clamping down on people getting the discount because since it was posted on HUKD, people have been taking advantage of the offer.

Playing Angry Birds on this phone has made me realise how much better than the HTC Hero it is :D Have wasted an entire evening playing with it and getting it up to speed with where my Hero was with Apps and the like and it is mint. I'm going to brag to anybody who is sad enough to listen about the bargain I got :D

Had this phone since friday morning and I think its fantastic! However there is an issue I keep getting a very very low signal strength with this phone, while my N900 has atleast 2 bars or more. I dont get it!

stupid question but my unmodded sf doesnt rotate to landscape on the home screen which i thought it did previously and looking at Balb0was pics his is doing so in the last pic he posted (even though im sure his is modded and seen him at modaco forum) am i missing something simple (new to android and smartphones in general)

I wonder whether the other operators will need to respond with an equivalent spec and style handset at this price point also potentially from ZTE. I imagine ZTE could just re case the tech. Or will htc not wanting to be outdone do something and bin the wildfire. Its the fact it looks like it could cost propper money which really wins it for me and the epicly cheap unlock costs.

Cant wait to see what comes out over the next few months.

Oh and the stock orange rom is gash.

Agreed. Other operators are going to see this and be pretty 'wtf?!' wanting a slice of the action. To people in the know there is nothing near this at the price point, and I'd probably even say that with the rubbish Orange ROM. If someone sold it with stock android at that price then pound-for-pound it's phenomenal.

Needless to say I've been playing with mine even more and it is still impressing me!

i've had this phone for a week. its alright for the price. might aswell get 2 as a spare battery.

very bright screen, great for viewing hi res pics from my camera
lots of ram, twice as much as the £400+ smartphones of last year

only thing is i tried some apps and games from the market, and they are rubbish lol, all basic apps req are preinstalled already.

Right, my 99p unlock code came through at about 10pm so 7 hours after ordering. Worked no problems and the phone runs nicely on vodafone.

The phone has the a APN settings already installed which may have been from the custom rom.

Good times!

When you check your balance or own number on the SIM settings do you get the right information displayed? I'm getting random characters from my Vodafone SIM though the phone appears to be getting calls/text messages properly.

I used the unlock code from above, rooted it with the Modaco superboot root and custom rom.
