The new Orange Android phone (San Francisco) £99...but a Question??

Which Roms are good and how do i choose which one is for me?
Is it easy to customise roms? And is it possible to embed things like Handcent sms into the launch bar, rather than the standard sms app.

You want LauncherPro 2. You can have up to 3 docks that you swipe sideways through. Each dock can have 5 app icons. Each app icon can also have a separate function that you swipe up on. eg my gmail icon has a swipe up function of opening k9.

Just long press on a dock icon to choose either changing the shortcut, the icon or changing the swipe gesture action. To get more docks press menu - preferences

So can somebody tell me what the media side of this phone is like? How well does it play music and videos? What video formats can it play? Are there apps that can change what it can play etc? Really tempted to get this phone it looks great. I hope it is better than my PoS LG Cookie though. Despise that phone. The touchscreen on this is better surely?

Is that the right name? I can't find it on the market.

Just changed from the R4 rom to the Bladevillain 1.0.1 rom. Much nicer. It's faster, has less crapware and I managed to get my email working off the bat (which for some unknown reason I couldn't on the R4 rom).

Try to have a play with any Android handset you can TBH and see what you think. The San Francisco really is a fantastic phone. It'll wipe the floor with your LG Cookie in every way apart from perhaps the camera (which for me is the only real let down for the SF).

I'm planning on upgrading to the SF from the LG cookie also, its so damn slow and unresponsive its driving me crazy! Only thing is I don't want to have to buy the $10 airtime with it, as I'll be using it on Virgin!

I went from tocco lite which is pretty much exactly the same as the cookie. The difference between this and them is night and day. The picture quality on the screen is miles better and with the right roms its very responsive. On 2.2 the slightest touch and it responds. As most people have mentioned the only downsides are the camera is rubbish and the build quality isn't the best. Look after it though and build quality isn't an issue.

I don't think I'll ever buy another phone that isn't android.

MP3/music playback can skips/stutter, video playback can be just as bad with audio desyncing from the video.

Hmm doesn't sound great. Was hoping that it would handle at least music no problem. Any apps to remedy this?

Also is it worth unlocking to be old o2 sim? I don't have a data plan or anything on it so how will that effect my experience with the phone? Will I need 3G connectivity?

The FLB-Froyo G2 rom is pretty good. Been using it since it was released, but I think I may go back to 2.1, maybe the new BladeVillain rom.

The web browsing seems a lot better in Froyo i.e. pinch-to-zoom is much smoother. The Gallery also loads much faster as well. However, the battery does drain way too quickly due to the Dialer constantly running.

I haven't found the modaco own roms to be that slick either.

Try a different media player off the market

Tempted to give this a go, but ideally would like to keep all of my settings, apps and widgets etc, anything that would let me do this or am I re-downloading everything? Cheers.
