The new Orange Android phone (San Francisco) £99...but a Question??

Guys I'm really not up to date with it when it comes to mobile phones at all, thus I'm seeking wisdom!

My question is; I'm currently on a plan with virgin media, if I was to pick up one of these orange phones would I be able to unlock it and use it on my virgin contract? Also how would the internet work with that, would I need to upgrade my virgin contract to include internets?

I bought one for my son, unlocked it & changed his virgin contract to 300 mins + unlimited texts + unlimted Internet for £15 a month

I'm sure it is in the thread, but the thread is massive.

What is the best place to get the unlock code and do I need to boot it up with the orange sim card at all?

I'm looking to pick one of these up since I can recycle my n86-8mp for about £130 which should cover the phone and a 16gb microsd card, where's the cheapest I can pick one of these up? Clocked play listing them at £100 all in, on preorder until 30th though, student discount is gone on the orange site too, would my best bet be to give orange sales a call and see how much I can push them for?

[edit] forgot to add, don't know any current orange PAYG customers :(

Thanks,.. duuuurrr I should have a better look.

Dude, it is criminal not to debrand / de orangeinate this this using sebastians rom (or modacos own though I prefer sebs) and clockwork. It will run smoother without all the orange gubbins on and you can always go back to stock.

Also means you won't need to worry about that choice as you will just get stock android.

So what are people using thats pretty stable? are the 2.2 builds any decent just yet? I'm going to start tinkering around with it. Is R4 the best to go for?

So far I'm loving the gforums 2.2. Been using it a couple days and not got any battery draining problems. Its smooth as, and its nivce having transfer to sd facility. A2SD is such a pain to setup. Shame a lot more apps don't support it.

Can't wait for a proper solid release of froyo.

If you are using a Froyo build then you don't need to do any special formatting. Froyo supports A2SD on FAT(FAT32?) formatted SD cards by default.

Which Roms are good and how do i choose which one is for me?
Is it easy to customise roms? And is it possible to embed things like Handcent sms into the launch bar, rather than the standard sms app.

The Froyo builds work OK, but they do require quite a bit of initial fiddling to get them working correctly.

If you want to stick with Éclair for now, then I find Seb's de-orangeated ROM to be one of the better available ones.

There is a table available here that lists out the differences between each of the ROMs:

I would suggest 2.1 Sebastians. I have been using it for ages with no probs.
