The new Orange Android phone (San Francisco) £99...but a Question??

I use RockPlayer. No problems with sync/skipping... as long as you keep the bit-rate under control.

Okay will look out for it. Sorry for so many questions but I will definitely be wanting to root and then put a new rom on there. The deorangeanized one looks like it would be fine. Why is the process so tricky? Why has nobody compiled a batch file or piece of software that does it in one click? It doesn't look too hard to do but not sure on this fastboot and stuff. Is the phone to be plugged into the PC throughout the whole process? After I've done this can I drag and drop files onto the phone via windows explorer just like music files etc?

Cheers.

You’re all done now pretty much. Keep tapping ‘Back’ until you’re back at your Home screen then restart your phone and you should now have G/E/3G/H internet access as well as the ability to send/receive MMS.

There is a problem with MMS on Android that limits image resolution to 160×120 but if we all keep pestering o2 to update their list of phones and compatibilities this should be solved soon enough.

Tempted to give this a go, but ideally would like to keep all of my settings, apps and widgets etc, anything that would let me do this or am I re-downloading everything? Cheers.

Personally when I updated my rom it kept all the apps and my settings, had to delete then re-add some of the widgets, also used titanium backup to backup all my apps incase they did get deleted, that way you can reinstall the apps +data easily if something does happen

The only apps that will be affected by roms are the ones in the system folder(i.e ones builtin to the rom) so apps that aren't included in your new rom's system folder will get removed e.g. orange apps, maybe filer etc if they arent included

So I went to the Orange store over lunch, turns out they now want $20 top-up and didn't even have a demo version to play with...

There was only really one thing I wanted to know anyway, if the text messages are displayed in a similar fashion to that of the iPhone?

On the website it still says £10 top-up, I'd go back to the shop and tell them to match the website deal.

The default SMS application displays each message individually, rather than as threads of conversation.
There are quite a few apps on the market that mimic the iPhone SMS style, with Handcent being highly rated.

i think i'm gonna wait a couple of weeks and get the white one from play.com for a hundred bucks, looking forwards to using this bad boy

Yea I think play is the superior option, not sure on the white though, would need to see more images to check just how pimpin' it is.

Interested to hear why you would go back to 2.1 ? Is the Froyo rom not complete enough or too buggy ?

Couple of bugs just. Battery indicator shows the Dialer at up to 100% of battery consumption. Whether or not the indicator is at fault or the Dialer really is using that amount is yet to be discovered. The Ambient Light Sensor doesn't work either. There are some apps to which fail to start or install (I tried VM Heap Tool and it didn't work).

The battery life is worse though. I had a full charge this morning, browsed the forums and Modaco on the phone and it went down to 94%. Then idle for a bit, one text and it was down to 88%.

Performance wise, there isn't much difference really. I think the browser is a bit quicker at scrolling (definitely with pinch-to-zoom), but general UI and Appdrawer is the same, if not a wee bit slower actually. The Gallery is noticeably better and overall I guess you could say its a bit nippier, but nothing ground-breaking imo.

The BladeVillain rom is meant to be the fastest 2.1 rom, so I'll probably "downgrade" to that.

I don't think any stores have demo phones, but one of my local ones was happy to get one out of the box and let me play around with it, while the 2 other local stores were not interested and just said "sorry no demo phones".

Thanks for that. Im thinking the BladeVillain rom too. I guess the froyo alpha just isnt mature enough - I was hoping to see up to 50% performance gains as some other devices have seen.

Now trying the FLB 2.2 and I think the gforums is faster more responsive with touch and games.

So far on both I've managed to install adialer and the dialer never shows up in the battery stats. Battery life on 2.1 roms seems to be similar to 2.2 for me. Think its depends what you have running.

Managed to get 1010 on quadrant using the gforums 2.2 :)

Edit: Just got 922 on the FLB 2.2.

Received this yesterday, and went through setting it all up. Did notice the battery symbol up top was showing a question mark, and status is "Unknown" in About Phone. But didnt think much of it.

Tried charging overnight, and no green led in the morning. In fact, woke up to find the phone still only had 40% charge remaining. Checked with another charger, but I think the phone or battery are faulty.

So now have to see how good Orange are at replacing the phone. Ive read some scare stories of over a week (!).

Ooer, sounds like a duff one to me. Any luck with a replacement?

Mine's been fine apart from the fact it seems to be developing creaky keys.

On another note, I've decided that Bladevillain might be a bit crap. Whilst it feels smoother in navigating around the phone, I keep on finding that it slows/crashes in angry birds and internet browsing, especially compared with the R4 rom (which was fine). One thing it doesn't seem to give is the option of switching off mobile network internet. It only seems to disable it when you switch wifi on.

The only downers with the R4 rom were WaveSecure, Titanium Backup and the rubbish stock keyboard. Might try something else - any recommendations? However, there's a little bit inside me saying to just go all-out and buy a used Desire...

Have you tried the Froyo Alphas?
