The new Orange Android phone (San Francisco) £99...but a Question??

I got a replacement last week, how do I tell?
Display a pure black image full-screen, ideally at maximum screen brightness. If the screen still looks black as if it's off, it's an OLED. If there's backlight bleed or it looks gray and non-uniform, it'll be a TFT

Edit: The difference should also be noticeable when browsing dark webpages, etc. If you've not noticed any drop in image quality you're probably sorted :)

Flashed mine with the Modaco r4 rom via clockwork.

To be honest, it seems to run at the same speed as it did when I had the Orange Android on it

Got angry birds but it is practically unplayable on some levels as the slowdown is a joke.

Does anyone know how i can speed it up or have I done something wrong? I thought the custom Rom made everything run smoothly?

The hardware acceleration and other options are included in some of the roms, Depends on which you went with I guess.

I'm not installing any new roms until I get my new sim as being charged 10p every time I turn the phone back on is a bit of a pain...

Stock of the grey phone is becoming very low around the country. When new stock arrives it will be the TFT screen version. I have compared my OLED phone to the new white phone with TFT and apart from the backlight which is visible around the screen edges when you hold it at an angle, there is no difference. Same screen resolution, same number of colours. The TFT versions have a different touch controller though which is better than the synaptics found in the grey OLED phones, but this means almost all custom roms currently will not work. This includes the 2.2 roms but there will be fixes for this soon. Keep checking MoDaCo.

Well my Mummy has reported back and I can get a Black, grey and white one locally all with massive stock levels.

Does the black have the OLED screen? (Orange San Francisco)

It is difficult to say. I would think so yes but you ain't guaranteed on it. Ask a store assistant... coz they'll be very knowledgeable! ;)

Well I've given up on mine. I wasn't expecting the earth, and part of me probably really wanted a Desire anyway, so that's what I'm getting tomorrow.

Don't get me wrong - it's a really good phone for the money, there's no doubting that. I just found it annoying that even when I used a stripped-down version of 2.1, it'd often slow right down with just the addition of a couple of apps and a go on the internet (typing became very sluggish and unresponsive until the phone woke up and realised what it was I wanted it to do, as would the home screen on occasion).

Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance, but I really haven't the time to keep trying different combinations of ROMs and stuff. As a phone for browsing and email etc, it was far, far better than my HTC Legend was. The build quality is pretty poor though, and call quality was not that brilliant (slightly muffled). I think I'll stick it on t'Bay tomorrow and see what it goes for.

Ok ive had my SF a few days now and im comparing it to a iphone 2G

Pros

Fast
Multi tasking
Price
Customisation
GPS , 3g
High resolution screen.

Cons
Quality of apps doesn't seem very good.

Lack of games

Poor performance and graphics in games

Multi tasking just seems to go on and on until it uses all the memory.

Screen not as responsive as i would like.

Screen gets greasey and i have to wipe the screen every few minutes

I have , Dolphin HD , standard internet app , opera mini and mobile and none are as good as safari they might render faster in some cases but the over all browsing experience is not as fast or smooth.

Camera is worse in every light condition compared to 2.0mp of iphone.

GPS using maps is pretty rubbish but hopefully a better app will improve this.

The customisation is good to a extent but some of the things need customising because they should have been on the phone as standard.

Overall id give it a B grade mostly due to the cost but it has not inspired me to go for a top end android phone.
