The new Samsung Odyssey G9 Mini Led

Still haven't opened my box yet! Busy day but had planned to find the time until my daughter told me that her phone had been stolen so I had to spend what little time I had spare dealing with the consequences

So clearly 240Hz is a problem on the Neo G9 just as it has been on the G9. but is anyone using 240Hz? Isn't it a tough ask for any GPU to handle 240FPS at this resolution?

Good news from @1Deep about the pixel - maybe there's a chance I'll have all the pixels I paid for too!

I spoke to soon about the stuck pixel, it's back or it never left, it's a lot duller though and only appears on dark colour backgrounds. Annoyed but it's very difficult to notice now.

About the whole 240hz thing, I'm half tempted to use the HDMI and just 144hz, that's plenty to be honest.

Is there much visible difference between 8 bit and 10 bit on these panels? 120Hz and 8 bit gets rid of the scanlines and the image looks sharp and crisp now from corner to corner. Can't spot any difference testing out both...

Is it still a 8bit+FRC like previous model?

10bit in windows will look better if you look at some colours you can see less gradients.

I saw on the HW unboxed review that the hdmi 2.1 ports don't seem to be fully utilised. Would they not have been better placed to use over the DP1.4 port as the primary all singing/dancing connection?

The I/O seems quite disappointing and some of the other drawbacks is putting me off, the less faff the better for me. I switch between Macbook and desktop with my I/O connected to the monitor so it can be shared easily.

On the fence between the AW3821DW and this. I'm a gamer but currently on 1440p IPS 60Hz so will still be blown away by any higher refresh rate but might miss the colour of a full gamut IPS. I'm a web developer so vertical space for code is useful too. I might opt for the Alienware and a 16:9 vertical screen and wait until these super wide screens to mature. Best of both worlds then.

I finally got to unpack my Neo G9. Well I haven't actually fully unpacked it for the reason which is rather annoying about some new tech these days - that there might be something wrong with it such that it has to be returned. Indeed rather than be excited about getting it on my desk, I was focussed on just doing the minimum so that I could check the pixels. That has been hard work in itself - at my age my eyes aren't great for fine detail especially with my floaters - but I'm fairly sure there are no stuck or dead pixels. With that worry over I can start appreciating this monitor and although its the first time I have seen a G9 of any generation, I guess I'm familiar enough with the marketing and discussions about it that it hasn't surprised me - even though it is replacing a 10+ year old 27" 1080p monitor with a 22" second monitor.

Now my initial reactions are good. For productivity it looks excellent - I wish I had bought something like this sooner. It doesn't seem as imposing as I thought it might, and the curve does not seem as pronounced as I had expected based on reviews. In need it to be slightly further back on my desk but I already planned for that. Although the stand seems sturdier than I had expected, it is still relatively easy to make the monitor wobble a bit so a wall mount is essential for me. The size and shape do seem perfect. I'll need to spend time setting it up - the default setting don't seem great. I'm looking forward to seeing the effects of the added peripheral vision in gaming.

Been playing with mine a bit trying to figure out these scanlines.
Highlighted text in a browser url shows them up pretty readily.

As others have said extreme edges show them the worst with top left being most noticeable.

For my screen:
240h they are fairly obvious. In fast moving games you probably won’t see them. But stop to smell the roses and it’s distracting
120h I thought it wasn’t present but they are a bit. With adaptive sync on it’s not too bad but with it off it’s almost as bad as at 240h
It’s not too bad until you see the monitor without it at all which happens when I drop it right back to 60h
Up until then I hadn’t realised the source notification in the top left is meant to be a solid blue colour rather than with lines running through it.

might wait for a firmware but this might be going back for refund as for the money it can’t be anything other than perfect :(

I've read various reports of the following, have you experienced any of these?

1. FALD+HDR on NVIDIA GPU's being washed out/unusable.
2. Popping/cracking noises like old G9.
3. At 240 Hz, scanlines.
4. Horizontal color banding viewing solid colors.
5. Seeing individual FALD zones.
6. VRR being automatically turned off when switching between SDR and HDR.

1. FALD+HDR on NVIDIA GPU's being washed out/unusable. - I don't use HDR. It didn't look washed out just dim. I adjusted by increasing the brightness on the Nvidia control panel. What I don't like is the text on a black background dimming in the middle of the background. I expect that's just the nature of HDR. I also use photoshop for photo editing so I don't want the monitor or Nvidia messing up the brightness in areas of the picture. So I just don't use it.

2. Popping/cracking noises like old G9. - No. Not a peep.

3. At 240 Hz, scanlines. - I have seen them on highlighted tabs/menu items. Can't say it bothered me. Not there at 120Hz which is also fine by me,

4. Horizontal color banding viewing solid colors. - No. Tested with Eizo Monitor Test. No stuck pixels either. I can see some faint yellowish horizontal bars on bright white backgrounds. Have to look hard for it though. Mostly don't notice it.

5. Seeing individual FALD zones. - Not that I have noticed.

6. VRR being automatically turned off when switching between SDR and HDR. - Can't say I have noticed when I was trying out HDR.

Not had much time for games but its been fantastic for productivity. I doubt I shall bother with 240Hz if there are problems - 120Hz is fine for me too. I did all the EIZO tests and everything looked good to me. I think I heard one or two pops yesterday but nothing today. If the pops on the original G9 were happening daily then Samsung must have changed something for this model, unless the mini LEDs are spreading out the heat more than the LED set-up on the original G9.

I did have a problem when the monitor suddenly went off. Fortunately I then discovered that whilst I was looking through all the settings I must have turned on the 4 hour power-off option

Have had the neo g9 for 5 days now. Some major issues.

1) HDR i experienced in halo mcc once i can never get again , just not bright .
Even displays 1015 nits in display settings in windows.
2) Everytime i set color red green and blue to 100 it shortly goes back to 50 every time.
been talking to samsung they keep telling me to reset settings unplug etc. just not working.

Anyone else had these issues?

Having lusted after the original G9 but wary of its faults, it’s such a shame owners of the the G9 Neo really are in early adopter risk territory (@therealdippy), with a mix of existing and new issues making their way into the Neo.

I so wanted the Neo to be great. It absolutely should be perfect at the price being asked. I think I’ll bide my time a little more to see how it pans out.

Im in the same boat... Really wanted to get this, but there are just too many little issues which are unacceptable at this price point. Most of them should be able to be solved via a firmware update or 2 so hopefully in a few months its a much better procduct
