**THE NVIDIA DRIVERS THREAD**

So, after a nice little run of no crashes I'm back to a previous problem where the "Display driver has failed to respond and now recovered"

Anyone else experiencing the same on the current driver?

Incredibly annoying when you're in a game.

Are you running any manual OC's or have any browser windows open?

No, none of the above. World of Tanks and that was it.

As previously, it happens any time after booting up, on average anytime after 20+ mins of having started the PC.

Also happens when WoT isn't running.

Well.... I spent the best part of the evening trying to get these to install and I am left with a PC that now needs to be reformatted.

Initially I was in a race with Windows as to who could install the drivers first. I was uninstalling existing components, rebooting, deleting folders and then finding windows was reinstalling an old driver behind my back so I wasn't able to install the new ones. The cheeky little $%^& had also reenbled the option to download driver stuff which I turned off (doesn't make a difference anyway)

Rinse repeat. I tried, unplugging Ethernet that stopped it installing old ones but them Nvidia installer was failing....

Ended up in an inconsistent state, where windows was reinstalling components but in an inconsistent state. For example the Nvidia control panel was there but not launchable. Also not in add/remove either....

As a last resort (first time I've used it) I tried DDU.

Booted in to safe mode removed drivers and then tried gain..... but it just fails to install.

So it looks like I have to reinstall windows. :o

Whats the official way to stop windows reinstalling drivers? In the anniversary update the option in the hardware section instant there any more.

I remember the last time I did a format I had to unplug the Ethernet cable to stop it doing these automatic driver installs!

In future maybe it would be easier to do the updates from the GFE? I have never done it that way and prefer to do it all manually.

I thought that no longer works?
That's right it doesn't work fully since the anniversary update. The best options now are disabling updates via group policy on Pro/Business versions, or using the Windows update troubleshooter on home edition - although that only allows you to block individual updates.

I've never had any issues with W10 and nVidia drivers, I do question at times how people have so much bother?
Just because you've not experienced it doesn't mean it's a non issue. It's quite widely reported and it seems builds of W10 are not as similar as you'd think. It all depends on when it was built, when it's been updated etc.

Me neither in truth. I am proper lazy though and upgrade via GFE and I always put on the latest drivers.

Me too. I dont even clean install and just install over the top of them every single time and never had any problems at all. Windows 10 here with a single 1080 but from Vista and even crossfire 5850's when I was AMD, I always did the same. Ive found that DDU and the like are total overkill and often cause more problems than they prevent

Same here, I've been reinstalling drivers over the top of old ones now for about ten plus years, can't remember the last time I've had an issue.

Well me neither... but this time It's trashed my PC. The fact that me and windows are fighting over who gets to install a driver has meant I cant install anything.

It keeps trying and partially installs and I cannot install anything manually either.

Only a fresh install of windows left to do.

But how to avoid this in the future.... guess I have to do it via the GFE which I loathe. Makes you wonder why Nvidia bother to release the exe's.
