The OCUK Guitar Warriors Competition

Think that Japanese guy took lessons to get that good?

EDIT: Also, how do you go about learning to shred?

Argh don't use shred as a verb XD

If by shred you mean being technically adequate as to be able to play any ideas you have in your head regardless of their difficulty then there's a whole other world of exercises and practises to get into.

Sorry it's just annoying when people say 'I want to shred' as it's so lame thinking playing a gazillion notes is impressive.

I don't want to shred as a party trick. I can play the guitar but i'd like to extend my skill and learn how to do it. There is a difference.

I have been terribly lazy and have not given my thoughts on the excellent music in this thread. Gordy as we all know is utterly fantastic, so I'll leave that as that :p. Like CleanBlueSky I don't really care too much for the Gary Moore school of music (sorry people!), and so his is also much to my taste (some great sounding chord progressions there akin to Neil Young, something I struggle with). I do like Skinny's prattling about though as it reminds me of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Penskis first one isn't my cup of tea but is excellently put together :).

Edit: a little multilayered song/jam I recorded last night now up :)

Care to enlighten me to a better term then?

I hope I didn't sound patronising I just meant that if you're wanting to have the technique that is usually associated with 'shred' then it's better you go about it instead of asking how to be able to 'shred'.

If you want to improve on your technique then try splitting it into 4 areas such as left hand technique which could involve things such as legato (EG hammer-ons and pull-offs), right hand technique (alternate picking), syncronisation of right and left hands (string skipping, unusual linear exercises - i've got some examples of these) and arpeggios.

If you work on these 4 areas then technically you'll definately improve as a player, then you can go to all the 14 yr old guitar gods 'Hey guys, I can shred!' :D

Excuse me Mr Dm. I realise you are on a mission to assert yourself as alpha male musician because us lowbies are far too inexperienced or un-talented for your liking but we cant all work to your scale of being. I will be done when im done :p

Oh dear, I'm not a musician. A musician is a very big word that I doubt many on here will ever get to. However, if you can read musical notation and translate that to your fingers then you are miles ahead of me. What I've got in abundance is 35 years of experience and that is all.
Theres one local musician who really dislikes me and he summed me up in one sentence - "The trouble with Dave Poole is that he knows how to pick all the best musicians and he surrounds himself with them to make him sound so much better".
Too bloody right - I won't allow anybody to make me sound crap.

Get your entry in and lets see if you're worthy of sharing a stage with me :)

I used to be a big fan of Nuno Bettencourt and could probably put together some interesting shred stuff...

You know you are going to have to prove it?
The difference is I know you're joking.

Still not sure how this was a guitar warrior comment, but to update i`m still in the same position :p . Can play it but it still sounds poor for timing/clarity. First 40 bars is only up to the chord section, havent even looked at the next part. see if i can put some stuff up this weekend. i only have wavelab and cubase (basic version or something that came free) and i dont know how to write drum tracks, so it will be basic.

You said it was "easy and boring" to play yet it's taken you a good few weeks to come up with a recording ;)

I have to say, I really like Penski's stuff. Very surprised.

record the first 40 bars and DMPoole cant be dissapointed nor shocked, or say anything about your ability as that is all you stated you could play!

It is easy and it is boring, like the top gun theme tune, that sure as hell doesnt mean im going to learn it.

Why, thank you, Mr. Knightly. You are awful! *flutters eyelashes*

I reckon I could hit every note in that vid of the Japanese guy...But it'd take me eight hours to play as I'd have to check hand positions three or four times before playing a single note.

;)

I'm not - I grew up on classic rock and still count it amongst my favourite genre...

I can can do a reasonable attempt at playing most of his stuff, including the wonderful intro to He-Man Woman Hater which used to drive me wild with guitar-love when I was about 16-17...

I've never recorded shred or written my own sutff but I dont mind having a go... I've got quite a nice riff that I have never thought that would go in a song... if the competition goes on for another week I'll see what I can do...
