The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

This might be borderline sacrilege in this thread but not worth a new one..

Any ideas for drinking JD other than the usual coke/ginger? Got a bottle for Christmas as I obviously wasn't clear enough in my desire for some single malt  :p

You could try making an Old Fashioned with it or since you like JD and ginger a variation on a Whisky Mac but using JD instead of a blended Scotch.

JD, Disaronno and Coke is my go to for something slightly different.

Few pubs near me have started serving it under the name 'Godfather'

looking to expand my taste by moving onto proper bourbon

been sipping woodford reserve or makers mark in the pub recently and have enjoyed them

where should my jumping off point be for buying a bottle for myself?

Buffalo trace seems to get a lot of love and is very reasonably priced and is one I have not tried either

My manager bought me a bottle of Caol Ila for xmas, does anyone know if this would be similar to Lagavulin 16yr old?
Caol Ila is very smokey like Lagavulin but less smooth and less depth of flavour. I would say it is more like Laphroiag. Definitely a great whisky!

Probably my favourite whisky that I tried at The Whisky Show was Mackmyra Skördetid so I was very pleased to get a bottle of it for Christmas.

I opened it on NYE intending to have a dram or two and ended up getting through half the bottle.

I tried this at Wee Dram Fest and agree it was very nice, I was impressed. The Malstrom was also very good. I’ve only got a bottle of their Brukswhisky at home which is very young but nice enough and easy to drink.

I received a bottle of Glen Deveron 16 for Christmas which is absolutely delicious. It's very smooth with some sweetness and caramel notes. I never drink whisky, so I'm quite surprised how much I like it! I tried to get into it years ago and bought a Lagavulin 16 which was awful... too peaty and smoky; I think we ended up throwing it away as even my dad didn't like it!

I like the Deveron so much I'm keen on tasting more! Going to read through this thread and see what you all recommend.

Had some Balvenie 21 yesterday. Very smooth but I think I look for more flavour and smoke in a whisky so not blown away. I was hoping to taste the Port finish a bit more.

Got a bottle of Nikka Coffey Malt last week. I tried it at the Whisky Birmingham festival in 2017 and liked it, got chance to try it again when my cousin had a bottle around Christmas time and so decided to order one myself. Looking forward to getting that open.

Mate of mine has just done a comparison of the Coffey Grain and Coffey Malt (amongst many many other whiskey reviews)

https://www.thedramble.com/tastings/group/wake-up-and-smell-the-coffey/

I prefer the Grain personally but only remembered after buy the Malt.

I'll stick up a picture of the current collection tomorrow but have been enjoying a Glen Garioch 8 year independent bottling tonight as well as a Talisker 10, two very different but two very good whiskys.

Costco have some Laphroaig QC at the moment. An old favourite I haven’t had for a while. Really great whisky. Heavy smoke and peat with a slight sweetness from the bourbon barrel.

Sat here with a bottle of Gentleman Jack and Wild Turkey (Xmas gifts). Have to say I'm preferring the turkey... Any decent bottles that won't break the bank that people would suggest to a newbie to all this?

If your starting out go with the ones that are stocked in most supermarkets, Jura, Whyte & Mackay are in most places.

Wanted to buy a friend of mine a decent bottle for a gift, was looking at Lagavulin 16 Single Malt - but then thought I'd get something he wouldn't mind drinking more often and easy (cheaper) to replace. Settled on Monkey Shoulder as it sounds like an easy to drink Whisky and moderately priced.

Anyone had any experience with it?
