The OCZ Vertex 3 Thread

Hmm I've enabled hot swap for the drive, it's currently still running as my second drive with just steam installed on it......

I've been out for the past 3-4 hours and left my PC on downloading, when i got back steam had crashed, the SSD wasn't in view under "computer" and it wasn't even visible under disk management.

3 Event log messages started with:
1. The device, \Device\Harddisk2\DR2, is not ready for access yet.
2. The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0.
3. An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\DR2 during a paging operation.

Tried restarting but the PC just locked up loading windows, then powered down completely and started up again and it's back. Something certainly doesn't seem right there though.

Starting to wish i had stuck to what i know and just bought an elmcrest drive.

EDIT: I was on firmware 2.08, updated to 2.09 see if that fixes the issue.

I didn't have (or couldn't see) any hotswap setting on my mobo, but the registry fix by itself worked fine for me. I also have a 2.02 firmware drive, the disappearing thing (which you should probably be able to correct short term with a cold boot) mostly occurs with higher firmware revisions, though not exclusively. I'd suggest changing your bios setting back and try the LPM registry fix. It basically tells the SSD to not sleep, which should also help ensure it doesn't disappear off the radar any time soon.

Are you able to link me to some documentation regarding the LPM registry fix?

EDIT: ok i think i found it, i've run that, turned hot swap back off in the bios (correct?) i don't currently have the intel rapid storage management drivers installed though? it's just running off the microsoft drivers, should i install those?

You should be using them if your drive is connected to an Intel chipset sata port (since you're using a P67 board I presume these are available to you).

You would probably do well to read OCZ's SSD guide on their site for drivers and settings info too, the recommendation on which drivers to use for which chipset and other things are all covered and more.

Ok well i've downloaded the latest IRST drivers from the Asus website for my board and installed them, and i'm going to run a secure erase on my drive a bit later on as well. Then i'll run an ATTO benchmark post that up and let people tell me if it's as i should expect, if that's ok i'll run it for a few days and see if i get that problem from earlier again :)

Thanks for your help (also i had a read of the OCZ guides but couldn't find anything specific for recommendations on drivers etc?)

I would try the drivers from the Intel site. Asus never keeps its software up to date.

I don't know if your running Windows 7 x64 or x32 so you pick.

Interesting the one i downloaded from the Asus site says:
Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology Driver Software V10.5.0.1026 for Windows Vista/7 32bit & 64bit.(WHQL)
and it's 251mb released 01.06.2011

Whereas the one on that intel link are:
12/15/2010 version 10.1.0.10 and only 0.26 MB

But they're both called the same thing?

I've just run a secure erase using the OCZ toolbox and this is the difference before and after in my ATTO benchies:
attos.jpg

The 0.5 - 16.0 section has jumped a fair bit!

EDIT: Also, i don't know if this make a difference but i formatte the drive using GPT rather than MBR, could this have made any difference or is it likely the entire benefit came from the SE?

Having fun bios? :P

:p I think it's working flawlessly now :D Speeds seem good, no freezes, no BSODs, no random restarts, just running smoooooth

Still not sure whether to keep the vertex as my steam drive to run games off though or to move it to my windows drive, as i doubt i'll notice much difference over my x25-m and i do need the extra space for games... hmm decisions decisions, it's such a hard life having top notch speedy equipment :D

Blah wish I had a decent SATA3 controller to reach those kinds of speeds with mine. Capped out at 250mbs write, 400mbs read here!

:(

Hi Guys i wonder if you can help me i have just purchest 2 OCZ Agility 3 SATA III 60GB Solid State Hard Drives and have p67 chipset my question is how can i get the best performance from these drives i.e in raid or best controller to use ect any help would be appreciated.

many thanks

No idea why he linked to such old drivers, these are the 10.6 RST.

Still on 2.02 here. No issues with stuttering or BSOD, but have noticed my read/write performance has decreased since I put the drive in.

Is this something that the firmware addresses, or would I need to erase the drive to get the performance back?

Thanks.

There will be a slight performance decrease but trim should keep that in check. Unless there is a significant performance decrease then I wouldn’t bother with a secure erase.

As to 2.11 don’t go anywhere near it unless you’ve had problems. With the current bad track record of firmware releases it’s far too early to see if this is finally a stable bios.

Left is when the drive was first installed a few months ago, right is a bench from yesterday:

There a fair bit of difference around the lower numbers. I haven't noticed a performance decrease, but there's quite a difference in some places according to atto.

I'm getting occasional bluescreens due to my Vertex 3 - the latest relating to ataport.sys - and my computer won't boot if I just press the reset button. Power off and on fixes it. This is very disappointing after going through TWO Vertex LE drives. It seems that OCZ drives offer great performance but their reliability is in the gutter. I just make sure to regularly backup my files, with symbolic links and Dropbox being essential.
